Canada: Lost teenager walks out of bush after two days in Golden Ears Park (Do u go hiking?)

Playa - indeed - quite the news story here this past week.

It’s scary how disoriented you can get on hikes.

Had an incident back around 1995 or 1996. My mom took my bro and me for a hike in North Van late one summer. All was going well until we started making our way back to the car. We got further and further away from where we should have headed. No phones obviously - mid 90s. Took us several hours to course correct and we ended up exiting into a residential area like 30 mins on foot from our car. Just glad we were all safe and had packed enough snacks and water. We didn’t panic, but we were definitely quite worried. Thankfully we got out of there around 5:30pm so plenty of hours of daylight yet. We would have been fucked in the dark.

I'm so ignorant on hiking nature walks etc

But I've heard so many scary stories recently I'm not interested

They’re good for the fresh air and exercise. Definitely be prepared and let your family know your plans though, or else.

Growing up we had a park and trails about 10 mins up the hill. If you walked 15-20 mins down you got to the ocean. We knew those trails like the back of our hand.

We fucked ourselves in North Van as that was 30 - 40 mins by car from home. We didn’t have our bearings or a compass, lol. Our bad.

Damn. We had a guy at work who had a serious number of falls due to panic and anxiety. It got to the point that he had 13 - 15 minor falls over the course of a year and change. No brain-related issue. I spoke up for self and co-staff and said it was not the right environment for them. Eventually he would have a major fall and suffer serious head trauma. They were hosp’ for a few months, returned for 3 weeks, moved to supported care and passed 3 months later of other health issues.

It was scary as the falls were happening out of the blue. Writing incident reports for falls you didn’t witness and the person could not explain in detail. Very challenging.

We go hiking all the time. Been on multiple hikes up in Alaska, Virginia and in Cali. We always bring our trusty knives and stay on trails. Also we are not doing all day or multiple day hikes, hour in hour out or a loop.

Multnomah Falls can be really difficult if you don't have your bearing.
The first time I went, I was anxious as Hell.
But once I got My Hiking Groove in order,
Going a few more times,
Shit was Breathtaking to say the least.

Much respect

I think in concept I would love it

But being city fied my whole life I don't think I could handle losing my bearings getting lost using a compass etc

That's smart. Keep the circuit short or on a loop. Less chance for error.
