SEATTLE -- Some things are better left un-tweeted.

The Seattle Mariners have responded after a racially-charged tweet was made by backup catcher Steve Clevenger.

The third-string catcher is in hot water after tweeting about officer-involved shootings, President Obama and the Black Lives Matter movement.

"The Seattle Mariners are very disappointed at the tweets posted on Steve Clevenger’s account. While he is certainly free to express himself, his tweets do not in any way represent the opinions of the Seattle Mariners. We strongly disagree with the language and tone of his comments," the Mariners' statement read.

"We are currently examining all internal options that are available to us as we determine appropriate next steps. We will have no further comment at this time."

In the tweet, Clevenger calls the Black Lives Matter movement "pathetic," and says "Obama you are pathetic once again!"

"Everyone involved should be locked up like animals," Clevenger's tweet read.

The now-deleted tweets were screen captured from his now-protected account, and shared on Twitter.





The tweet follows controversial events in Charlotte, North Carolina, where the fatal shooting of 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott by a police officer is being investigated, and protested.

According to family, Scott was sitting in a car reading a book when police approached him. Police say he exited the car armed with a gun, and an officer opened fire after Scott refused to drop it when commanded.

Family members maintain that Scott was unarmed and that there's video to prove it.

Police Chief Kerr Putney said during a news conference Thursdaythat the video does not definitively show 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott pointing a gun at anyone.

The controversy has led to violent protests in Charlotte, including one where 26-year-old Justin Carr was shot and killed.

Carr was shot as protesters clashed with police in riot gear lined arm-in-arm protecting the Omni Hotel about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

City officials say Carr was not shot by an officer, and Putney says detectives are determined to find who fired the fatal shots.

No arrests have been made.

Clevenger is 30 years old, and a Baltimore native. He was traded to Seattle in December of 2015, and previously played for the Baltimore Orioles, and Chicago Cubs.

Clevenger issued a statement through his agent Thursday night, apologizing to the Seattle Mariners, the fans, his family and the game for, "the distraction" his tweets caused. He went on to say he was, "sickened by the idea anyone would think of [him] in racist terms," and "I just ask that the public not judge me because of an ill worded tweet."

Mariners Catcher Steve Clevenger Suspended Without Pay For Tweets

The Seattle Mariners responded to backup catcher Steve Clevenger’s dogshit dumb tweets about protesters by suspending him without pay for the remaining 10 games of the season. Here is the relevant part of the statement released by general manager Jerry Dipoto:

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced that the club has suspended Steve Clevenger without pay for the remainder of the season.

“As soon as we became aware of the tweets posted by Steve yesterday we began to examine all of our options in regard to his standing on the team,” Dipoto said. “Today we have informed him that he is suspended for the remainder of the season without pay.”

Clevenger has been on the disabled list since June and wasn’t going to play anyway, but the suspension will cost him roughly $30,000 from his $516,500 minimum salary.
