They spray but the distance from target, ammo type & ammo manufacturer play a roll in how good of a spread you get. It's all about the groupings of the shot. The tighter the group, the more effective the shot. Up close even if you miss you can't miss in most cases because the grouping is at its tightest. Further out you are from your target the more likely it is for less pellets to connect and your target still be able to act against you.

Regardless of what you use, the most important thing to do is practice. Shotguns have an inherent limitation in ammo capacity and how it's loaded so you'll want to practice to where it becomes second nature in how you manipulate it and handle malfunctions. This way if something was to pop off, your skill level will fall to it's lowest level of training but will still be well within good proficiency and have you less likely to fumble around
