Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki demands US withdrawal timetable
Iraqis want an end to the immunity that US troops have from prosecution
James Hider in Baghdad

Iraq said for the first time yesterday that it wanted to set a timetable for the withdrawal of US troops from its territory.

President Bush has long resisted a schedule for pulling his 145,000 soldiers out, arguing that it would play into the hands of insurgents. Nouri al-Maliki, the Shia Prime Minister, who boasted last week that he had crushed terrorism in the country, suggested that it was time to start setting time-lines.

“The current trend is to reach an agreement on a memorandum of understanding either for the departure of the forces or to put a timetable on their withdrawal,” Mr al-Maliki said during a visit to the United Arab Emirates. He rejected efforts by Mr Bush to hurry through an agreement on vital issues such as the immunity of US troops in Iraq and use of the country’s airspace. Mr Bush had hoped to sign a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) by the end of July to establish the basis for a long-term presence of US troops in the country.

The Iraqi parliament has bridled at pushing through such a binding deal with the outgoing and unpopular Bush Administration, saying that the negotiations have been secretive and could undermine Iraq’s sovereignty. “I don’t know anything about this agreement and neither does parliament,” said Ezzedine Dawla, a Sunni MP. “We’re going to pass something we don’t know anything about.”

Mr al-Maliki’s announcement showed a growing self-confidence that Iraqi leaders can stand up to their powerful ally. His oil minister said last week that leading Western oil companies would not be allowed to set conditions for future deals over Iraq’s main natural resource. The tough stance also comes before Iraqi provincial elections later this year, and may mark the start of the Prime Minister’s campaign to be reelected. His popularity was bolstered by military operations to take back the southern oil city of Basra and the town of al-Amarah from Iranian-backed Shia militias.

His comments may also hint at future cooperation with Barak Obama, the Democratic candidate, who has promised to pull US troops out of Iraq within 16 months, although Mr Obama has since appeared to waver on the commitment.

“The negotiations are continuing with the American side,” Mr al-Maliki said, reflecting the desire of many MPs to wait until a new administration is in the White House, and Iraq’s provincial elections are over, before making any deal. The agreement would govern such issues as immunity for US troops from prosecution, the use of Iraqi airspace, and which side takes operational control for military missions against insurgents.

depends on what he calls a "terrorists". If your like the average old white American politician, that means any group or individual who will not fully bow down at the alter of American capitalism and control. CNNs Michal Ware keeps saying that most of the Iraqi government holds some form of allegiance to Iran in one way or another. When we get out, Irans influence in Iraq will grow. Thus, "terrorists" will take over.

If the US pulls all US Forces out of Iraq, The Iraqi Shia govt will invite Iran in being Iran is actually running the govt anyway.

This will put the rest of the Arab nations in panic mode like Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria to help the Sunni's in Iraq. The US is pumping up the Saudi military with arms deals anyway.

While the Kurds, Shia, and Sunni's are fighting and killing each other like Bloods and Crips for no reason, The US is sucking them dry of oil.

Peace.

I was thinking about this earlier, if Bush was smart, he would announce that Iraq is able to secure itself and announce victory has been acheived, even though we all know that aint true, but people would believe him.

Peace.

Ok, lets do what they say. Lets get out of Iraq on the most part. Keep around 60k-50k troops there just to be in an advisory role *and just in case IRAN do some dumb shit*.

To me, it seems that Iran just wants to be left alone. The problem is Israel. Israel wants Iran out of the picture just like they wanted Iraq out of the picture.

Their two biggest threats.

But a significant portion of the politicians and Congressman in the U.S. either are very pro-Israel, or actually have dual citizenship (can you spell i-l-l-e-g-a-l?) with the U.S. and Israel. Why else do people like Nancy Pelosi make so many pilgrammages? Of course she's not going to impeach Bush for Iraq...

"Axis of Evil": Iraq, Iran, North Korea...

Two-thirds have either been attacked, or have bowed down.

North Korea, after rebelliously flaunting their nuke capabilities in the early 2000's, has probably been threatened with scalar-weather-war along the lines of the Chinese weather disasters recently (not confirmed yet, just something I'm looking into) OR have been pressured by the World Trade Organization.
Whatever the reason is, something made them bend. Since they were part of the "Axis of Evil", It's not a far leap to conclude that U.S./Israeli operatives have something to do with it. So now N. Korea has begun dismantling their nuclear systems.

So who's left? IRAN. The presence of Iraq and Iran had Israel on edge. Now one is just about deflated (at least as far as going pre-emptive with Israel). One more to go...

... therefore a U.S. presence WILL remain in the MIDDLE-East, like it or not. At least until Israel feels secure...

... and until that time, Bush, McCain, nor Obama ain't gon' do ish about it but TALK...
