Rami Malek Admits Working With Ex-Bohemian Rhapsody Director Bryan Singer Was ‘Not Pleasant’

As Bohemian Rhapsody continues to solidify its Oscar villain status, the film’s star, Rami Malek, is getting more candid about the firing of original director Bryan Singer — a firing we still have conflicting narratives about. But as Malek explained during a Friday evening panel at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, Singer’s behavior made his working experience more terrible than anticipated. “In my situation with Bryan, it was not pleasant, not at all. And that’s about what I can say about it at this point,” he said. “For anyone who is seeking any solace in all of this, Bryan Singer was fired. Bryan Singer was fired, I don’t think that was something anyone saw coming but I think that had to happen and it did.”

It was previously rumored that Malek, fed up with Singer’s frequent absences from set, complained to higher-ups about the director’s “unreliability and unprofessionalism,” with the duo’s animosity even resulting in a fight where equipment was thrown. Singer was ultimately fired in December 2017 and replaced with Dexter Fletcher to complete the film.

Singer has claimed the reason for his Bohemian Rhapsody absences was due to caring for a sick family member, but over the past year, many new sexual abuse allegations have been lodged against him. Despite the numerous allegations, Singer is still attached to direct the upcoming drama Red Sonja, and he celebrated Bohemian Rhapsody’s successful Oscars campaign.

BAFTA Removes Bryan Singer’s Name From Bohemian Rhapsody Nomination Following Abuse Allegations

BAFTA has removed Bryan Singer’s name from Bohemian Rhapsody’s Best Film nomination, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “In light of recent very serious allegations, BAFTA has informed Bryan Singer that his nomination for Bohemian Rhapsody has been suspended, effective immediately,” BAFTA said in a statement. “BAFTA considers the alleged behaviour completely unacceptable and incompatible with its values. This has led to Mr Singer’s suspended nomination. BAFTA notes Mr Singer’s denial of the allegations. The suspension of his nomination will therefore remain in place until the outcome of the allegations has been resolved. BAFTA believes everyone has the right to a fulfilling career in a safe, professional working environment, and it will continue to collaborate with the film, games and television industries to achieve this.” The names of producer Graham King and writer Anthony McCarten will remain.

In an exposé published by The Atlantic last month, four men accused Singer of sexual abuse, dating back to the 1990s. After The Atlantic’s story, the GLAAD Media Awards removed Bohemian Rhapsody from consideration for Best Original Film. Singer called the report a “homophobic smear piece,” and his attorneys denied that he ever had sex with or had a preference for underage men.

Bohemian Rhapsody was the big winner at the Academy Awards on Sunday night, topping all other films as it took home the Oscar in four categories.

At the same time, the film's disgraced director Bryan Singer proved to be the big loser of the night, with not one person mentioning his name as they collected their statues.

This included star Rami Malek, who won the Best Actor trophy, and the winner of Best Editing, John Ottoman, who has worked with Singer on every single one of the director's projects since 1988 when he made his very first short film.

Singer may not be too bothered by this slight however, with Rhapsody's wins at the ceremony sure to boost the film's box office which is already at $850 million.

A source with knowledge of negotiations between Singer and Fox told DailyMail.com that should the box office cross the $1 billion mark, the director would be taking home over $50 million for his work on he film - despite being fired before production wrapped on the picture.

None of the winners at the Oscars on Sunday actually took a stand and denounced the director either, who has been accused of raping underage boys multiple times over the past decade, with allegations going back as far as 1998 on the set of his film Apt Pupil.

Those allegations were well known before Rhapsody went into production, though Malek has claimed multiple times to have been unaware of the accusations that multiple young men had made against the director.

Singer has denied all allegations of sexual abuse.

Singer was fired by the studio just two weeks before principal photography was set to be completed on Bohemian Rhapsody for his erratic behavior and long absences from set.

The source who spoke with DailyMail.com said that Singer did have a back-end deal in place after agreeing to take a sightly lower fee to direct the picture.

That source said that the current box office haul for the film far exceeds even the loftiest projection by the studio, but estimated that Singer would end up with at least $50 million if it does reach $1 billion at the box office.

On the higher end of the scale, the source said that Singer's back-end might be in the low nine-figure range if Rhapsody becomes one of the less than 40 films to make over $1 billion at the global box office.

There is also a chance that Singer gets nothing if there was a morality clause in his contract, and he was somehow found to be violation due to his behavior.

The source seemed to think that the studio would rather pay out the disgraced director and be done with it rather than drag out the situation.

Documents obtained by DailyMail.com reveal that at least five men pursued cases against Singer in 2014, all alleging that they were sexually abused by the X-Men director.

The documents also include the settlement agreement that was offered to Michael Egan after he filed complaints in California and Hawaii alleging that the director had raped and sodomized him while forcing him to snort cocaine at his Los Angeles home.

Singer denied those allegations at the time through his attorney, and two months later agreed to a settlement deal that would pay Egan $100,000 once the cases in Hawaii and California had been dismissed from the court.

What was not noted at the time however was the fact that Egan had already won $1 million in a suit he filed a decade prior against Singer's business partner Marc Collins-Rector.

Singer and Collins-Rector had worked together on Digital Entertainment Network, which was set for a $75 million IPO in 1999 when Collins-Rector was accused of sexually assaulting Egan, Mark Ryan and X-Men star Alexander Burton.

Lawyers for Egan and the other accusers did not respond to requests for comment.

Egan opted not to take the deal, but at least one individual who hired attorneys from Herman Law did take a settlement.

The details and amount of that settlement are unknown.

It is also not known how many individuals were represented in total by the firm, but a letter to Egan on June 25 stated that 'three other victims' and a 'potential client' were also pursuing cases against Singer.

A letter detailing the settlement from Egan's lawyer at the time explained that once signed he would be required to answer any questions relating to the complaints he had filed against Singer by stating: 'I have nothing to say.'

And if asked why he dismissed the claims he was told to reply: 'I do not want to pursue the claims against Bryan Singer.'

That letter was signed by Singer, his lawyer and Egan's lawyer, but Egan refused to the agreement.

Egan said at the time that he did not want to sign the non-disclosure agreement, but it should also be noted that he would be taking home only a small percentage of that settlement money in the end.

The $100,000 would be taxed because of the nature of the suit, and $40,000 would go to the law firm representing Egan, leaving him with less than $30,000 in the end.

A British minor (above) who claims Singer raped him at a hotel

In his initial suit, Egan claimed he was sexually abused when he was 14 or 15 and moved to Los Angeles with his family to start his acting career.

It was in LA that he was introduced to Hollywood power player Marc Collins-Rector and his lover Chad Shackley when he was invited to a party at Collins-Rector's home.

These parties allegedly 'featured sexual contact between adult males and the many teenage boys,' according to Egan, but he maintains he 'never freely' consented to the advances.

It was two or three months after Collins-Rector began allegedly abusing Egan that he was introduced to Singer at one of the parties.

Egan said he was in the pool, and nude, when Collins-Rector approached him and ordered him out to hug Singer, who allegedly grabbed his bare buttocks.

He claims Singer later said he was 'sexy' and went on to masturbate the underage boy and perform oral sex on him. The director then allegedly told Egan to do the same to him, but he says he resisted.

Herman said at the time the complaint was filed that he had witnesses waiting in the wings.

Egan eventually lost his lawyer when he decided against moving forward with the settlement offer at the eleventh hour.

He then withdrew his complaint, but with the option to refile at a later date.

Singer sought to have the case dismissed with prejudice so it could not be re-filed, but his request was denied.

U.S. District Judge Susan Oki Mollway said at the time that Singer did not prove that Egan's voluntary dismissal would damage the director's reputation, and that the money spent defending himself doesn't constitute legal prejudice.

'Any alleged damage to defendant's reputation may well be ameliorated by plaintiff's voluntary dismissal of the action,' said Judge Mollway.

Singer denied Egan's allegations.

The only other known plaintiff who filed suit against Singer in 2014 was a John Doe from Britain who alleged that the director tried to rape him in a London hotel room when he was 17, following the premiere of Superman Returns.

Singer was accused of grabbing the teen's penis and kissing his waist and thighs, before performing a sex act on the boy, according to the suit.

'Singer told John to fondle his penis, but John refused,' according to the complaint.

'Singer then grabbed John's buttocks and attempted to insert his fingers into John’s anus.

'Singer then removed his boxer shorts and John said, ''I do not want to do that''.

'In response, Singer said to John: ''Then just sit on top of me and [masturbate]; I want you to [ejaculate] on me.'

'John Doe, believing that the only way for him to leave safely without being anally raped was to comply with Singer's demands, sat on top of Singer and masturbated, ejaculating on Singer.'

The next morning, according to the complaint, Singer contacted the teenager to apologize.

There was never any reason given as to why John or his lawyer suddenly decided to dismiss the case.

Yup that's the way it goes
If he was black he would be buried

At least 23 yrs of documented boyfucking and he's still getting awards and 8 fig checks to do big budget projects...he's been touching boys longer than half most of you dudes lives yet no protest, no documentaries, no mute singer, and I bet if that trailer look decent some of ya dudes gonna support another boyfucking project like ya did with that xmen movie he did...sips tea but it's no conspiracy to put a black face on sexual predators
You know what black, I mostly agree with you. But it’s not a conspiracy. It’s flat out racism at its finest. Same old shit different day. There was at least one documentary movie pointing out Singer. It was not dedicated to his crimes exclusively, but he along with his equally grimy partner were mentioned multiple times in the Hollywood child sex abuse doc, “An Open Secret” in 2014.

At this point, I look at it like this. We Black folks, did the right thing. In spite of a few hangers on, in the end we pointed out and went after a predator, R. Kelly who for decades abused AND pimped out OUR girls. This is what a civilized people does- hold accountable and deal with those who hurt those among them whom they are tasked to protect.

White males who are in power are not only uncivilized, but many of them are guilty of the same as R. Kelly and worse. Their rabbit hole of organized pedophilia runs deep. If they truly went after their own, a LOT of perverted white high profile heads would roll across industry, academia, law enforcement, the sciences, entertainment, politics and media.

They hold the seat of power and as someone once famously said, “Absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

#METOO is at its heart a good thing, as it opened the door to exposing a shit load of white predators, in spite of the power brokers not wanting that to happen. However, #THEMTOO also has relevance. Without question there is a racial bias at play when it comes to criminal justice- on the street level and otherwise.

Also, I’m not going to see shit that Singer directs. Fuck him.

I can least this much...

Well at least NOW?

it appears white AND black are all starting to get this fire...

But now lets see if Singer, Louie, Weinstein are all right back making movies and tv and no legal and no "cancellation" in a few months?

Well THEN explain to me how NONE of this racial when Cosby probably dies in prison in the dark.

Don’t forget ol Peedo ass Woody Allen, Elvis, and all them other motherfuckers too. Make the metoo shit real. Go after all of em! Spacey made his money but at least he facing courts. Don’t let Bill be the only dude in jail, get him some company !

Edit. I know Elvis dead but slander his douchebag ass too!

None of these actors etc said shit yet you got harpy looking bitches from the 60s talking shit about Cosby. Man white privilege is a mf. And Bryan is a weird, creepy peedo motherfuker too. You can tell by his personality
What i am more pissed at is black people that were screaming for Bill Cosby head.

Media people, everybody but keep silent about these cacs.

But will then wonder why the system is fucked up

Bryan Singer to Settle With Assault Accuser

Bryan Singer’s attorneys have agreed to a settlement of $150,000 in response to a claim made by Cesar Sanchez-Guzman that he was sexually assaulted by the director in 2003. Sanchez-Guzman filed a lawsuit against Singer in December 2017, in which he alleged that the X-Mendirector anally penetrated and performed oral sex on him against his will. Three years before the lawsuit, in 2014, Sanchez-Guzman had filed for bankruptcy, which was discharged. However, in 2018 the bankruptcy trustee reopened the case to give Sanchez-Guzman’s creditors access to proceeds from the lawsuit. Singer’s attorneys said their client still maintains his innocence.

“The debtor filed a claim against Mr. Singer that he had no basis or legal right to file,” Singer’s attorney Andrew Brettler said in a statement toVariety. “Mr. Singer has denied even knowing this individual, let alone allegedly having interacted with him more than 15 years ago. The decision to resolve the matter with the bankruptcy trustee was purely a business one, as litigation costs would well exceed the amount requested by the trustee to pay off the creditors who were owed money when the debtor filed for bankruptcy.” Singer has been accused of sexual abuse and molestation by four men.

@tallblacknyc

they STILL don't hear you
That CAC has Jew friends in High places. How is it that the dude had no legal right to file a lawsuit against Singer? Is there a Countersuit for Slander or Libel? If so, why would they settle? They made this measly settlement and applied it to a DISCHARGED Bankruptcy? How Sway?:dunno:
They are not only breaking that dude's pockets, but they aim to break his spirit as well. It sounds to me like he's still on the hook for HIS legal fees.:smh:

Jill Soloway Replaces Bryan Singer As Red Sonja Director

In a big twist to the embattled narrative around Red Sonja, Jill Soloway will write and direct the previously stalled film, according to Deadline. Soloway will replace Bryan Singer, whose work on the movie stalled following another wave of sexual misconduct accusations earlier this year. “I can’t wait to bring Red Sonja’s epic world to life,” Soloway told Deadline. “Exploring this powerful mythology and evolving what it means to be a heroine is an artistic dream come true.”

After new allegations against Singer were reported in an investigation by The Atlantic, the director was initially able to keep the Red Sonja job. Millennium Films producer Avi Lerner made a statement in support of him, but later backtracked. Sonja was then put on ice at Millennium. Red Sonja, about a character seeking revenge following a sexual assault, has been in development at Millennium for more than a decade.

Red Sonja director Jill Soloway likens film to Deadpool, The Dark Knight

The 'Transparent' creator sees their film's protagonist as the "first kind of bad girl superhero."

Red Sonja director Jill Soloway has some big ideas in mind for the reimagined heroine.

“I can really have so much fun with Red Sonja. I see her a little bit more like the first kind of bad girl superhero,” Soloway told Deadline during the Television Critics Association on Saturday. “Sort of like the Batman of The Dark Knight or Deadpool, you know?”

Both films were critically lauded for their edgy, psychologically complex dives into their titular protagonists. Deadpool, especially, won fans as it subverted superhero film tropes by breaking the fourth wall and using dark humor. It seems Soloway is similarly looking to challenge the traditions of the genre.

“The world is changing so much right now for superheroes, that I just really look forward to not only going to the edge of what I’ve ever written and directed before, but to the edge of the genre as well,” they said.

Red Sonja is based on the 1970s comic book spin-off to Conan the Barbarian, and follows the swords-and-sorcery heroine who was given powers by a goddess. A film adaption featuring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger was released in 1985.

Soloway also compared their Red Sonja to their other creation, Transparent. The series, which is set to end Sept. 27 with a musical finale, focuses on a family’s journey as their patriarch comes out as a transgender woman.

Although they acknowledged the comparison may be surprising, Soloway said their new project “feels just really very much like it’s coming from the same place” in its exploration of the divided feminine.

The idea, which can be seen in works from Charlie’s Angels to Sex and the City, asserts that women get “chopped up into” archetypes like the wife, bad girl, or good girl, Soloway said. Whereas their work, like the 2013 film Afternoon Delight and Transparent, has been about challenging that incomplete notion.

“If you look at Transparent, it’s really about a lot of women becoming whole. It’s Sarah becoming whole. It’s Maura becoming whole,” Soloway said. “All my work is really about humans searching for some divine feminine, asking these questions about God and looking for meaning. So, for me to transfer that into the world of Red Sonja felt incredibly natural, because Red Sonja is a very different kind of superhero. She’s not really typical.”

In July, it was announced that Soloway was replacing Bryan Singer as director of Red Sonja. The news came after The Atlantic’s lengthy report on the long history of accusations of sexual assault and misconduct against the filmmaker. Soloway will also write and produce the remake.

In both the source material and its 1985 film adaptation with Brigitte Nielsen, the characters’ back story begins with her being raped and left for dead. She is also famous for her bikini armor, although in certain issues she dressed more conservatively. With Soloway’s track record of making progressive content, it’s likely that the reimagined Red Sonja would feature a less sexualized version of the character onscreen.

Brian Cox defends Bryan Singer's on-set behavior on X2: X-Men United: 'I think he's an extraordinary director'

"He was under a lot of strain," the Succession star said of his former director.

Lately, Brian Cox seems to have about as much tact as Logan Roy.
After defending author J.K. Rowling over her transphobic comments, now he's throwing support behind his X2: X-Men United director Bryan Singer. Singer's reported "unprofessional" behavior on sets has often been a subject of controversy (and even led to his dismissal from Bohemian Rhapsody).
In 2020, The Hollywood Reporter published an exposé detailing an alleged toxic work environment on the first X-Men. The main cast reportedly threatened to walk away from the movie over Singer's behavior. Then, in a 2021 memoir, Alan Cumming, who played Nightcrawler in X2, described a similarly tense environment on set, including the cast staging an intervention for Singer over the director's use of painkillers.
But Cox, who starred as the film's non-mutant villain William Stryker and considers X2 the best of the mutant franchise, praised Singer and defended the director's on-set behavior in a recent interview with Yahoo! Entertainment.

Cox explained Singer's behavior, noting that the director was "under a lot of strain" throughout production. "One of his great things was that when he came to a new set, he would have to rethink it," Cox remembered. "He'd have a thought, and then have to rethink [the scene]. So that was always a difficult transition for him. But once he cracked it, he cracked it very quickly and was able to get on with it."
The Succession star also revealed that he was Singer's first choice for the role of Stryker, but that it took some back and forth between the director and the studio. "I think he's an extraordinary director — really, really gifted," Cox added "Certainly I will always be grateful to him because he had confidence in me and got me the role. I played a waiting game and it worked."

The Emmy winner also praised Singer's use of allegory in the film, as it pertains to the mutants and their sense of otherness. "There's real allegory in that film, and it serves a lot of purpose," Cox reflected. "That's why I love Bryan's view on it, because he sees it very much as those who are out of the norm as it were. It's very much an allegory film for him as well."
Singer came out as bisexual in 2014 and many have drawn parallels between the franchise's themes of feeling like an outsider and Singer's sexuality.

Cox is just the latest X-Men star to weigh in on Singer's on-set antics. When asked earlier this year about his experiences making the X-Men films, Hugh Jackman told The Guardian, "This was my first movie in America, you gotta understand; it was all so new to me. I think it's fair to say that… There are some stories, you know… I think there are some ways of being on set that would not happen now. And I think that things have changed for the better."
He then spoke more broadly, saying, "There's way less tolerance for disrespectful, marginalizing, bullying, any oppressive behavior. There's zero tolerance for it now and people will speak out, and I think that's great."
Jennifer Lawrence, who played Mystique in several X-Men films, also called out Singer, albeit in a more offhand manner, while sitting down for a roundtable discussion with multiple actresses in the awards season conversation for THR and addressing the stereotype that women are too emotional in stressful work environments.
"I mean, I've worked with Bryan Singer," she said. "I've seen emotional men. I've seen the biggest hissy fits thrown on set."
Singer has been the subject of numerous controversies. In addition to the various reports of his on-set behavior, including Rami Malek saying his experience with the director on Bohemian Rhapsody "was not pleasant," Singer has faced numerous allegations of sexual misconduct, including multiple claims of sexual assault of minors.
The director has been sued multiple times since 1997, though all lawsuits have either been dropped or settled out of court. Singer has not been arrested or charged with any crimes and the filmmaker has repeatedly denied the allegations.
