A man charged with repeatedly stabbing his pregnant US Army veteran girlfriend and killing her unborn daughter has told police it was an accident.
Oscar Alvarez, 30, made his initial court appearance on Tuesday evening and was charged with attempted murder, assault with intent to cause serious physical injury, assault and weapons possession in connection to the frenzied knife attack on 30-year-old Liv Abreu.
Alvarez is accused of stabbing his girlfriend, who was 26 weeks into her pregnancy, a half-dozen times in the chest and once in the side inside their apartment on Walton Avenue in The Bronx early Tuesday morning.
It was previously reported that the expectant mother sustained 30 wounds.
Despite her injuries, Abreu, who served in Afghanistan as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division, managed to crawl downstairs to a neighbor's unit and call for help.
Abreu is currently listed in critical but stable condition at Lincoln Hospital. Her unborn baby girl, who was due in August, could not be saved.
Abreu's older brother, Juan Carlos Abreu, tells New York Daily News his sister is expected to make a full recovery.
'The physical wounds will heal,' Juan Carlos said. 'The mental wounds will also heal at some point, but it will probably take longer. She's positive. My sister, she's a warrior.'
Police said Alvarez and Abreu got into a heated argument at around 12.30am concerning the boyfriend's suspicions that his girlfriend was cheating on him.
According to investigators, Alvarez grabbed a knife and repeatedly stabbed Abreu in the torso, then denied her care for 30 minutes until he put on a clean Polo shirt and jeans, grabbed the victim's cellphone and keys, and walked out of the apartment, leaving the woman bleeding.
The New York Daily News reported that Alvarez fled the scene in Abreu's 2004 Jeep Cherokee SUV, which he ditched a block away. He turned himself in to police at 4am.
