I'm a gal that knows a thing or two about a dodging coward. Don’t you fools know by now that Floyd Mayweather knew he was going to get a jail sentence and even if he expected no jail time, he knew he would be sentenced to home confinement, and even then, he couldnt train!! Hello to all Mayweather apologists, he used this time as an excuse and issued statements to infuriate promoter Bob Arum and toy with Manny Pacquiao. He doesn’t want a fight... how do you hold an arena if you are going to jail? The reason Floyd is famous in today's society isnt the same reason Muhammad Ali- a truly great champion of all time- was famous. Floyd's fame is more akin to why Kim Kardashian is famous. He has never fought a 100% prime all-time great and beaten him in his career, unless you want to count a shot Oscar De La Hoya or an unfocused Zab Judah as a close runner up. Once the craze of modern media sunsets on his prime, he will be voted as a top 50 pound-for-pound fighter, nothing higher.
Roy Jones ranks much higher- Roy beat a prime James Toney (who beat a very prime Michael Nunn), Roy beat Bernard Hopkins when they were in their prime (and Hopkins went on to beat everyone in the middleweight division), Roy won a light heavyweight belt from Mike McCallum (OK, McCallum was old), Roy KO'd Virgil Hill w the best body shot in modern times, and Roy beat perennial very good contenders like Reggie Johnson, Merqui Sosa, etc., whom were all better than any of Floyd's best wins. Didn’t floyd duck Kosta Tszyu, Vince Phillips, Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito, Kermit Cintron and Paul Williams by retiring every month? And now since hes going to jail, he will need a tune up fight.....boo hoo, the sports media gets duped for its long awaited mega fight the same way the social media was by the Kim Kardashian wedding. Lastly, Floyd wants to retire undefeated, as long as you know this, you know he will never fight a prime all time opponent. Victor Ortiz, stand up. Remember Roy was great, supremely great for 15 years too, and he got knocked out by one punch by a never-great Antonio Tarver. Don’t you think Floyd who turns 35 this year knows the dangers of fighting a live opponent on the other side of 35? Great mailbags, great reporting, just please you know better, don’t insult the public by portraying floyds bs.-- ANA from Fla
Darrell’s response: Hi Ana, thanks for the kinds words. As you know, despite the fact that I am a huge fan of Floyd Mayweather the fighter (not the person), I have been as objective as possible when writing about him. I have written articles criticizing him on his clever avoidance of multiple threats throughout his career. By the way, while I’m on this topic ---in my last mailbag I was inundated with emails suggesting that I not count Kostya Tszyu as one of the fighters Floyd ducked because had an exclusive contract with Showtime and Mayweather had one with HBO which would have made the fight nearly impossible to make. I wrote in my mailbag that I was willing to remove Tszyu from the list of fighters that I believe Floyd cleverly avoided IF that were true and Tszyu was stuck in an exclusive contract with Showtime. Scott Shaffer, an editor for Boxingtalk and boxing attorney, confirmed that Tszyu did not have an exclusive contract with Showtime at the time, and thus would have been able to face Floyd. For that reason, Tszyu remains on the list of fighters Floyd avoided.
I am far from blinded by anything Floyd and Leonard Ellerbe have done vis-à-vis Mayweather’s career and the protection of his 0. I have written many times that Floyd protects his undefeated record the way a mother protects her young. Obviously, I am on the same page as you in that regard. I think where we disagree is where Floyd NOW stands on the Pacquiao fight. Floyd is now finally comfortable facing Pacquiao after seeing him look human in his last two fights. Also, keep in mind that even if you are correct that he subconsciously sabotaged this fight by getting himself into trouble, he did so last year before Manny fought Shane Mosley and Juan Manuel Marquez. That was back when Manny looked much less beatable and more like a machine.
I think Floyd now feels more comfortable with the fight. Prior to recently, Floyd has cringed whenever Manny’s name was even brought up in an interview. I don’t recall him cringing when Oscar or Ricky Hatton’s names were brought up. I never got the feeling up until recently that Floyd really truly wanted to fight Pacquiao. I think the whole steroid thing was a clever way to buy time and get people to rally behind him and undermine Pacquiao’s accomplishments and raise doubt.
It also put Manny in a position where at best he either would not agree to Floyd’s demands and thus look like a cheater who was hiding something if he didn’t agree to give blood close to a fight (something Floyd knew he didn’t like doing after hearing Manny’s excuse for losing the first Morales fight) giving Floyd an out while at the same time at worst Manny would agree to it, pass the tests (if he were clean), but still be potentially affected psychologically and/or physically (potentially due to psychosomatic reasons) by having to give more blood than normal. We all know how mental boxing is. It was a win/win situation for Floyd. After seeing how well the Lightweight champion of the world (Marquez) did against Pacquiao, it’s getting harder and harder for Floyd to directly or indirectly imply that Pacquiao isn’t clean.
Hey man, what a brilliant resolution to Mayweather’s lockdown situation! I really hope Bob Arum reads your articles dude. I’m afraid he is too greedy to not try to squeeze one fight in between in order to suck more money out of Manny. Like you, I am afraid Pacquiao will lose and ruin the big showdown with Floyd.
Darrell’s response: Thank man, I really appreciate it. I agree that the Bobster is probably too damn greedy to wait a little longer and make the fight in the summer. Also, if the reports are true that Manny owes Arum millions for advances, I’m sure The Bobster will try to keep Manny as busy as humanly possible to recoup the money. Since my article there have been reports that Arum will be meeting with Manny after the New Year and presenting him with a short list of fighters. Bradley, Marquez and Peterson are the names on the short list. I am very concerned that Manny will lose to either Bradley or Marquez and the super fight we have been so patiently waiting for will be ruined. Damn it Bob! Get Floyd to sign an agreement before he goes away on an unwanted vacation ---the clock is ticking you greedy fossil!
Now that’s the type of logical thinking that I like to read instead of beating a man when he is down. Good read southpaw1974 & what a great idea.
Darrell’s response: Thanks man. I really hope my idea or at least a variation of it is implemented. I think it would work very well and also it would be great television to have the 24/7 cameras rolling while Floyd is in jail. First, Floyd would need to sign off on the fight so that the wheels will be in motion. I do not want Pacquiao fighting anyone else. I really feel like this is the last chance to make this fight while both fighters are still at or near their prime. Arum and company need to be patient. If Floyd is unwilling to sign a contract agreeing to the fight prior to going to jail after Pacquiao has agreed to take slightly less than 50% of the fighters’ take along with random blood testing, etc. then he is not serious about wanting to fight.
