Manny Pacquiao: If Floyd Mayweather Isn't His Next Opponent, Who Should It Be?
Fueled by a recent announcement by Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) CEO Richard Schaefer about a looming fight between Floyd Mayweather and Amir Khan ahead of the long-awaited Pacquiao-Mayweather match, fight fans are back to square one as speculations for next year's fight scenario have changed dramatically.
But a great majority of boxing fans who have responded to numerous online polls are still rooting for a Pacquiao-Mayweather match either in May or November of next year.
Schaefer said he had talks with Mayweather and his team and they're open to the fight. He added that Mayweather is likewise open to a Pacquiao fight:
"We believe in Khan and believe he is ready. These are big plans but Team Khan are on board.
"I've had conversations with Mayweather and his adviser Al Haymon and they are definitely open to a fight with Khan.
"Mayweather has indicated he would like to do the Pacquiao fight.
"He said to me he'd be open to fighting Pacquiao next if the blood testing issue can be sorted out."
Right after the press launching of the Mayweather-Ortiz fight and after Mayweather's announcement of his decision to finally face Manny Pacquiao, the public knew then that the fight everyone in the world wants to see will finally take place next year.
A few days after the Mayweather announcement, promoter Bob Arum said Pacquiao is agreable to unlimited testing provided the tests are done by a neutral agency and not the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), which Mayweather had reportedly endorsed.
The GBP top people, including Schaefer, may have assumed that Arum could be putting some "roadblocks" to the fight by insisting on the choice of an agency to do the random testing as demanded by Mayweather.
These developments could have prompted Schaefer to work on a Mayweather-Khan fight in March or May next year. And since they are both under GBP's umbrella, it will not take them very long to document the fight, as there will be no Bob Arum to consider in the negotiations.
Still, the Mayweather-Khan fight is dependent on the outcome of the Mayweather-Ortiz fight, which is scheduled for September 17, as well as the result of the Khan-Judah fight on Saturday.
Giving up on Mayweather for his next opponent, who should Pacquiao fight next?
Tim Bradley (if he moves to Top Rank), Mike Jones (mentioned by Arum), Victor Ortiz (if he wins). Who else?
There isn't much, it seems.
