Bucks send Mason to Hornets for Magloire

OKLAHOMA CITY - The New Orleans Hornets traded center Jamaal Magloire to the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday in exchange for forward Desmond Mason, an unconditional first-round pick in the 2006 draft and cash.

Magloire, an All-Star two seasons ago, averaged 11.7 points and 7.4 rebounds in 23 games for the Hornets last season. The 6-foot-11 center missed 51 games last season with a broken right ring finger. He had expressed a desire to be traded to Toronto, his hometown.
"We think for us and for him, it's probably the best thing to do," Hornets coach Byron Scott said.

Magloire hugged Scott and his Hornets teammates at the end of practice, but left the Ford Center without commenting to reporters.

"In Jamaal Magloire, we were able to add a young, All-Star-caliber big man to our front court rotation," Bucks general manager Larry Harris said. "He can score facing up, as well as with his back to the basket and he's proven to be a good defender and rebounder during his young career.

Mason, a 6-foot-5 forward from Oklahoma State, averaged 17.2 points in 80 games for the Bucks last season. A first-round draft pick out of Oklahoma State in 2000, Mason will be returning to familiar territory with the Hornets, who will play 35 of their home games in Oklahoma City this season after being forced out of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina.

Scott said Mason, the winner of the 2001 slam dunk competition, would bring energy, athleticism and defensive intensity to the Hornets.

"He's still a dunker, but he's added a whole lot more to his game than that," Scott said. "He gets to the free throw line a lot. He's a great one-on-one player, and that's something that we really don't have a lot of.

"He's a guy that can get his own shot as well as get other people shots."

Scott said Mason should fit well into his philosophy of pushing the ball up the court quickly.

"He gives us another guy that can really just go up and down the floor, that can fly," Scott said. "He just plays big-time minutes and he's a tough kid."

Hornets general manager Jeff Bower said the first-round draft pick, which New Orleans would get even if it ends up in the lottery, was a crucial part of the trade.

"Getting a player of his quality in addition to acquiring an unprotected first-round pick that we'll be able to use immediately in this upcoming draft is a package that we feel really has tremendous value," Bower said.

"We feel that this gives us a player we want and the player to add for our future that we are really, really excited about."

With Chris Paul and J.R. Smith at guard, Mason probably will fit in at the small forward position for the Hornets. But Scott said Mason could play either wing position. The Hornets also have guard Bostjan Nachbar and forward Rasual Butler fighting for playing time on the wing.

"It puts a little bit more pressure on those guys to perform because you've got a guy like that who can come in and play both spots," Scott said. "To me, he's a complete player. He doesn't have 3-point range on his jump shot, but everything else.

"He can get you baskets, he can rebound. I don't know if we've got a guy that can run up and down the floor as fast as he can."

Up front, Magloire's departure will move 6-foot-11 P.J. Brown from power forward to center, where he filled in for Magloire during his injury last season.

At the power forward position, David West and Chris Andersen will have increased roles, and second-round pick Brandon Bass and second-year player Jackson Vroman also could contribute.

Looks to me like Milwaukee is already counting their losses
I thought this guy was supposed to be a center?? If I was
Magloire, I'd get out of there quick. before they make him the
scapegoat for the franchise's failure

Bogut another great white hype.

Bogut is the second coming of ostertag.

I call him ostertag II the revenge!!!!!!!!

I wonder are white folks gonna bitch about weak ass bogut stealing money like they talk about darius miles and marbury stealing money.

If Bogut starting in the NBA isn't proof that the NBA is watered down I don't know what is. This fool should be riding the bench.

More proof that the NBA needs to go from 30 teams to 24.

Bogut is weaker then water and softer then air, 7 feet of filth!!!!!

One good thing about this trade is that it might force
the Hornets to run the ball alot more. With Chris Paul (and Speedy)
at the point and JR and Mason on the wings, I can't
see them grinding it out like they tried to do last season
Not if Byron Scott wanna keep his job anyway

you hit the nail on the head... it may or may not work, but it seems that the running strategy is all they've got... i say it's worth the gamble...

if you don't have the low post presence or the outside shooting required to run a successful half court offense, the only other way to score is in transition...

now that we know they have the athletes to run, the question remains do they have the D required to get the TOs and stops?

With PJ (or Chris Anderson) in the middle?? I don't think so
It might be thinking a little ambitiously to think they might hover
around the .500 mark for a minute. But not much longer
Maybe next year after they get a top 2 pick in the draft
