I can understanding him suing just for the principle of the loss, but $54 million??!!...... and what with all the tears in court??!! He's a grown ass man!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------
A judge had to leave the courtroom with tears running down his face Tuesday after recalling the lost pair of trousers that led to his $54 million lawsuit against a dry cleaner.

Administrative law judge Roy L. Pearson had argued earlier in his opening statement that he is acting in the interest of all city residents against poor business practices. Defense attorneys called his claim "outlandish."

He originally sued Custom Cleaners for about $65 million under the District of Columbia consumer protection act and almost $2 million in common law claims.

He is no longer seeking damages related to the pants, instead focusing his claims on two signs in the shop that have since been removed.

He alleges that Jin Chung, Soo Chung and Ki Chung, owners of the mom-and-pop business, committed fraud and misled consumers with signs that claimed "Satisfaction Guaranteed" and "Same Day Service."

Pearson, representing himself, said in opening that he wanted to examine the culture that allowed "a group of defendants to engage in bad business practices for five years."

An attorney for the Chungs portrayed Pearson as a bitter man with financial troubles stemming from a recent divorce who is taking out his anger on a hardworking family.

"This case is very simple. It's about one sign and the plaintiff's outlandish interpretation," attorney Chris Manning said.

Pearson called himself as a witness, saying his problems began in May 2005 when he brought in several suits for alterations. A pair of pants from a blue and maroon suit was missing when he requested it two days later. He said Soo Chung tried to give him a pair of charcoal gray pants.

As Pearson explained that those weren't the pants for the suit, he choked up and left the courtroom crying after asking Bartnoff for a break.

Roy L. Pearson, Jr.

He is an African American lawyer and administrative law judge in Washington, D.C. His undergraduate degree was earned at Lake Forest College and his J.D. at Northwestern University School of Law. Upon graduation, he first taught at, then became assistant director of, the clinical program at the Georgetown University Law Center. Pearson passed the bar for the District of Columbia in 1978 and bar for the U.S. Supreme Court in 1985.

From 1978 to 2002, Pearson was the attorney for the Washington Neighborhood Legal Services Program, serving as the Assistant Director for Legal Operations from 1989 onwards.

From 2003 to 2005, he was a contract hearing examiner for the Office of Police Complaints, and on May 2, 2005, Pearson was appointed as an administrative law judge for Washington D.C.

You see, I can agree with him taking them to court in principle, because if the motive was to sue for bad business practice and being conned into thinking that another pair of pants was his, then maybe him being a judge and not only wanting to highlight practices such as this and also to help put and end to these practices, I kinda see his point in suing.......BUT........ the fact that he is suing for such a ridiculous amount of money and to top it all crying like a 'pussy' in court is just straight up stupid. I reckon that the tears were tears of embarassment when he finally realised what a dumbass he had made of himself wasting tax payers money and the court's time over this issue.

I agree...He ought to win the suit ( :) ) but the damages should be limited to the price of the suit, and court cost (which arnt much sence he represented himself)

.... Imagine going to the cleaners and they fucked up your $800 brooks brothers blue suite. and they try to offer u some jive ass charcle gray pants as compensation. thats bs. but the 54 mil is just a stunt to get pub.

The person that's really fucked up in this situation is the judge that allowed this frivolous lawsuit to go this far. The dry-cleaner has tried to settle with this ho at least twice, going as high as $2000 for the pants. He's an idiot. These people don't have and probably aren't even insured for $50 million. But of course the purpose is never to actually win but to get the insurance company to settle (I'm sure he could be made whole with a nice $5 million). :smh:

10 minutes after I posted this, GMA ran this story and I saw the brother whinning about his damn pants. All I could do is shake my head. This dude wants money for car rental fees and half mil for pain and suffering?

I can't believe how this guy is wasting the damn courts time. If he got a new taylored suit out the deal, that should be more than enough. He'd rather bankrupt a family owned business.

The problem is that the legal sytem in the US encourages this sort of thing. The fact is that by law he is actually allowed to bring a law suit like this to the courts, so he is actually acting within the boundaries, as riduculous as it seems. The real loser here is the court and taxpayers who will have to burden the time and some of the cost of this farce.

He was offerred a "settlement" amount of $2,000 which he turned down...I'm sure for that amount... he could find someone to makem by hand...

What makes it worse is that they found his pants but he refused to accept them.

okay you cats can criticize me for what I'm about to say but whatever.

this guy is a poor excuse for a brotha. 54 mil for some pants???

You're a judge, the outfit didn't even cost you more than $500, you make over $150 k per year so just buy some new pants.

He sounds like one of these niggaz that comes into a retail store with water in a visine bottle, squirts the floor up with water and pretends to slip and fall. Nigga trying to come up on some bullshit.

A 60 million dollar law-suit over pants gone missing!

Why has the judge that is hearing this case not thrown it out?

 If the signs on the wall are wrong a nice fine is in order
not a 50 plus million dollar law-suit!

I'll start by saying that his lawsuit for $54million is both absurd and unreasonable and is a textbook example of a frivilous lawsuit which will one day be the death of tort law as we know it.

Now, that being said, who amoungst us has not been completely disrespected and disregarded by some rude Asian whose business we decide to patronize? Whether its fast food, casual dining, dry cleaning, tailor shops, or nail salons (for the ladies of course)? The fact of the matter is that generally speaking they seem to have a rude disposition and unappreciative attitude when dealing with customers; particularly those of the darker hue.

This case seems par for the course to me. From what i've heard in passing, this gentlemen was a consistent customer who had his $800 slacks (not a suit, but slacks) misplaced/lost by the drycleaners who then attempted to pass off some $30 action slacks as his (or something to this affect). All the while posting a "Satisfaction Guaranteed" sign and charging excessive rates for their services.

Sure this guy is a bit looney and maybe hes even wrong, but its hard for me to foster even an inkling of sympathy for these people knowing their reputation and history of poor customer service.

Chalk it up to "the price of doing business" in the USA. They can always go back to Korea.

Also, for those expressing embarrassment and outrage because this guy is black - Puhleeze. You guys have some deep rooted self-hatred issues you need to work on. Seriously. Who gives a fuck? How does it change your bank accounts? Heres a guy using the system to his benefit (regardless of how you feel about his tactics and personally i dont neccesarily agree but him being black is no reflection on the race as a whole). Good for him i say.

He has a Northwestern law degree and was employed by Georgetown law for over two decades (two accomplishments im sure about 0% of his critics can say they have achieved). If he was good enough for them then he should be good enough for some random brothers posting on a porn board. No?

Judge Pearson, good luck not being laughed out of every legal circle you enter from here on out brother. Hopefully you even get a phat check out of the ordeal (you're gonna need it as i predict your blackballing to be imminent), but at the very least you have put atleast 3 Koreans on notice as to how NOT to treat a customer in the future. Kudos!
