Black hair relaxer sales are slumping because of this

Slumping sales of hair relaxers among African-American women tell the story: More women are opting to forgo chemicals and go natural. But it’s the anecdotal evidence that conveys the real message.

According to the Boston Globe:

In less than a year, the Boston Naturals Hair Meet Up Group has grown from 200 to 800 active members. Experts are reporting a bump in the number of women looking to go natural, particularly over the past two years. The Boston group is no anomaly. Most major cities now have groups for women who dub themselves “naturals,” or are considering going natural. A look at the website My Natural Hair Events shows dozens of gatherings, and video blogs on YouTube are filled with advice on styling natural hair.

Modjossorica Elysee, the 28-year-old head of the Boston Naturals, says the growing interest in chemical-free Black hair is not simply a trend.

“I see a lot of women who have started to accept themselves and their hair,” she said. “They’re encouraging their children to start accepting themselves. This is entirely new.”

The consumer research group Mintel reported that hair relaxer sales dropped from $206 million in 2008 to $152 million in 2013, while sales of products to maintain natural hair are on the rise.

“The natural hair trend is driving an increase in sales of styling products such as styling moisturizers, setting lotions, curl creams, pomades, etc.,” said Tonya Roberts, multicultural analyst at Mintel.

“A look at expenditures from 2008 to 2013 shows steady growth in the Black hair care category for all categories except relaxers and perms.”

It's great to see more women embracing their hair naturally and experimenting in other ways with it. I personally like the straight look of my hair, but never enjoyed getting relaxers. The last straw was when my hair broke off in four different places due to a bad relaxer. That was over 6 years ago. My hair now has never been longer (mid back length) and healthier since I gave up the creamy crack lol. I switch it up between straight styles, wearing it curly and heat-free and braids without extra hair added. Naturalistas, unite!

This is great to hear.

I have seen so many sisters looking naturally beautiful and confident

joking about giving up the creamy crack.

I hope they can use this open more salons and natural products, this is exactly what Dame Dash was talking about...making the most of opportunities and we should be the distribute of the products targeting us.

I hope some sisters make some products for Black men's hair dreds, fros, ceasars and baldies.

I wonder if Chris Rock's movie had any effect at all?

I remember women crying on Oprah cursing that man out for telling their business.

and NOW look.

I was natural years b4 his movie came out and the previews intrigued me. After watching it I felt it was slightly interesting yet very bias as it played to the extremes of relaxers and weaves.

If anything I think Black hair meetups, YouTube, social media groups and blogs had more of an influence. Let's not forget that society (USA) is slowly shifting towards a more organic and healthier lifestyle.

This trend has been absolutely gorgeous and amazing to watch.

I don't want to sound crude, but my dick gets just as hard looking at a woman embrace her crown, as I would if I was looking at her ass and tits.

Like, they just look so FREE and so HAPPY being THEMSELVES and not like this Sunbeam White Bread society they have us thinking is heaven.:hmm:

Don't tell me how, but I knew you would be posting in here. Just following you on the board, when you do post, gave off that vibe that this is your thing.
Lizz Wright, the one in the center, is a personal friend and high school classmate of mine.

Her and I were both brought up mainstream and then once we became adults, and found our voices, we saw "the Light.":lol::lol:

I don't know about her, but I ain't looked back ONCE!
