Black Folks: Which group do you identify yourself closest with?

After some of the comments i've read on here recently, and a conversation I had with some co-workers today, I thought it would be interesting to see in a pole who black folk identify with the most. If you'd like, post the reason that you chose to identify yourself with the group that you choose. Thanks in advance for your participation.

Edit: Can one of the mods PLEASE add a question mark to the end of the thread title. It pisses me off everytime I look at it, and I can't change it. Thanks.

Nah I can see them but usually you can see which members voted for what.

Oh nah, I wanted to keep a level of privacy to the picks. If someone wants their pick known, hopefully they'll talk about it in the thread.

Re: Black Folks: Which group do you identify yourself closest with?

tough question

Its hard to say.

I am hesitant to associate myself with any group that will have anonymous members.

Circumstances would dictate me to align with whatever group that offers me and my family the most benefits at a particular point in time.

Re: Black Folks: Which group do you identify yourself closest with?

All of African decsent... In my blood are my ancestors from Africa. I am part of the diapora, the conquered that was stripped like the diamonds from our home.

I am American secondly because I am not considered equal in this land, as my rite of passage as citizen I voluteered for our military and continue to work with a distasteful public of spoiled ignorant adults.

I identify most with my countrymen and non-american blacks the most.........

"african"-americans are just as bad and racist as crackas in my book.

I am the descendant of Africans that were brought here to America. I am an American by birthright.

No matter where I am or where I'm from I demand to be respected as the man that I am.

What was the discussion about?

Re: Black Folks: Which group do you identify yourself closest with?

What was the discussion about?

I had the discussion with one dude and three females that I work with. It started because one of the females made a comment about the Somalian "pirates" that I didn't like. I schooled her as to why the Somalians conduct themselves the way that they do in their waters, but she couldn't understand why I would side with the Somalians. And this was AFTER I told her about how American and French energy companies dump toxic waste in their water without asking or letting them know. :smh:

That led me to ask all of them if they identified more with other Americans, people of African descent, or men/women in general. One of the females chose Americans and the other two chose women in general. The dude picked African Americans because, in his words, Africans don't use deodorant. :smh: Mind you, these are all college educated African-Americans. The discussion became rather heated at one point and we all agreed to disagree in the end.

I identify more with East and North Africans from certain groups.

People of African descent are much too varied for me to consider every black person a brother of mine.

Identity comes from people you see yourself in. Not only by pure looks, but from culture, values, lifestyle...ect

Only people of African descent with an African consciousness.

Just a question. Would you spend time and energy trying to share your culture, values, and consciousness with a person that looked like you, but didn't already have your culture, values, and consciousness, and you knew that they needed it?

No, becaust that would create tension(like many of the tension felt between WI, Africans, and African Americans today).

What is beautiful is that we are a diverse group of people with many different shades, languages, and family values.

It's a shame how LOST some people are isn't it? Thanks for sharing, and don't giveup. You never know, someday your words could ring true in somebody's head.

Re: Black Folks: Which group do you identify yourself closest with?

None of the above.

Me, Myself and I.

i choose:

African Americans.

im from chicago.

the city is approximately 1/3 black(around 1 million).

***edit, i identify with ALL original people(black, brown, yellow)

together we out number the colored man(whiteman/caucasian).

I identify with people who are cool.

I realize that there are just as many black people who hate me as there are whites.

Shit, i'm almost at the point where I don't give a fuck anymore. That's part of the reason I made this thread. Trying to enlighten people that don't want to be enlightened is very stressing, especially when you realize the depths of their ignorance, the strength of their willingness to remain ignorant and how much they out number the amount of people that actually have information that they want to share to help these people.
