The woman accused of driving her car into a crowd of pedestrians in Las Vegas Sunday night, killing one person and injuring dozens more, had been repeatedly chased out of parking lots where she and her 3-year-old daughter were attempting to sleep, according to a police report.
Lakeisha Holloway, 24, was charged on Tuesday with murder in connection with the death of Jessica Valenzuela, 32, of Buckeye, Ariz., as well as several lesser charges. The crash injured at least 35 others, three of whom were in critical condition on Monday.
The report noted that immediately before the incident took place, Ms. Holloway had gone through a “stressful period of time,” being run off properties where she and her daughter were trying to rest.
She eventually found herself on the Las Vegas Strip, “a place she did not want to be,” the report said. She would not explain to investigators what led her to drive onto the sidewalk.
“This is a horrendous and inexcusable act that has needlessly and tragically impacted countless lives,” Steve Wolfson, the Clark County district attorney, said in a statement.
“I am confident that, as the investigation unfolds, we will be filing many more charges,” he said.
Mr. Wolfson has said that his office may seek the death penalty for Ms. Holloway.
Ms. Holloway, a native of Oregon, was under suicide watch at the Clark County jail, according to Scott Coffee, a public defender, The Associated Press reported.
Ms. Holloway said she was not under the influence of any drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash. A toxicology report from the incident has not yet been released.
She appears to have a background of some adversity. She was homeless in her freshman year of high school and her mother struggled with alcohol abuse, according to a 2012 report from The Skanner, an Oregon paper.
Still, Ms. Holloway overcame those challenges to graduate from high school, and even earn an award for being a role model by the Portland Opportunities Industrialization Center, a program for at-risk youth.
“It’s hard to believe that Lakeisha did this, she was such a great kid while she was a part of our program,” said a member of the center’s staff in a statement.
A promotional video for the center published in 2012 showed Ms. Holloway telling a portion of her life story. She describes her background as one filled with “crime, drug addiction, lower income, alcoholism, being undereducated,” and says that her mother’s drinking led directly to her homelessness.
Despite that, she became the first person in her family to graduate from high school and attend college, she says in the video. She also says she landed a job with the United States Forest Service.
“Today, I am not the same scared girl I used to be,” she says. “I am a mature young woman who has broken many generational cycles that those before me hadn’t.”

"A souring relationship with Holloway’s boyfriend may have been a factor in her decision to veer her
Oldsmobile on and off the sidewalk several times Sunday night in what officials said was an
“intentional” act — sending dozens of people to the hospital"
