Entries Due April Fools...no...on April Fools DAY. You know...April 1st.

I've been talking with Ansatsusha_Gouki about doing another contest. I enjoy the dark side. I don't know, it's just me. Payback or revenge stories and movies always seem to get my juices flowing. Revenge is definitely something that would be a good start for people. Revenge is a dish best served with icicles dangling from the plate. Served as slowly and as deliberate as the creeping fog; with the care and precision of a surgeon. Some of my favorite movies are revenge movies, payback movies. Movies like: The Count of Monte Cristo, Gladiator, Kill Bill, Unforgiven, Sleepers.

The best revenge stories have the protagonist sufferings bringing forth a side of them that up to this point lay dormant. Vowing to no longer play the victim, the protagonist strikes back in a way that allows them to take back the power from an oppressor. Though the tables will never be even, their act of vengeance gets it close enough.

Payback is a bitch.

I want to set you a story where you have the utmost freedom with the only concrete factor being revenge of sorts. This story can be personal, your own "Horrible Bosses," or it can be complete fantasy. I only ask that the story be of your own imagination. No fan fiction. No conscious rip-offs of any movies, or books. 3000 word limit, not including the title.

I know you guys are busy as I am, but fuck it. Let’s do this damned thing. I'm on Spring Break for the next week (I have a paper due in Honors English 1020H on 20 March), and I know spring break is coming up for many of you who are still in school. Let's do this

Theme: Revenge - Give us your best payback story.

Length: 3000 words max. I mean it.

Deadline: Sixteen days from today, March 25. I know some of y'all are in school, plus work as I am, so 16 days is enough time to put something together, edit and proofread it sufficiently)

Prize: Highest scoring story gets a free year membership to BGOL paid by yours truly. In the event of a draw between two stories we'll hold a vote on just those two stories. Whichever one gets the highest score wins the free year membership.

Revenge themed, I don’t care where you go with it, really, just as long as it is a revenge story.

Rules:

No fan fiction. The biggest and best part of story writing is coming up with YOUR OWN idea. If you take an idea that someone else had and expound upon it that is cheating.

So please, if you join this contest, use your own stuff. Even if you ask your kid brother, niece or nephew for an idea and write about that, that is cool. Kids have the damnedest imaginations. Just don’t take something that is already written or drawn and turn that story into your own story.

3000 words. I upped it from the past contest of 2500 simply because it is so difficult to fit the details that make a story good into 2500 and I always had mine over and had to cut the pieces off of my baby hurt like you wouldn’t believe. I know all writers feel the same. 3000 is the limit, and votes will be removed for every word over the limit

3001-3100 = 1 vote removed

3101-3200 = 2 votes removed

So don’t go over the limit. This is just for fun. An internet contest for BGOL bragging rights.

If you are interested in joining, PM me or post it here.

Are you in? I’m looking for as many contestants that want to join to come, represent. Let's get it on

Here are some tips for the writers out there

Here is a bunch of tips

Here is one that stuck out

Tips for Novel Writers: Fleshing Out Characters
Know Your Characters Inside Out

Let Your Characters Take Risks, J Burtinshaw
The following exercises will help you to build realistic, believable characters for your novel or short story.

Too often, beginning writers make the mistake of focusing on plot and forgetting that plot is closely tied to characterization. In order to be a great story-teller, it is imperative to understand who your characters are and how they will react to various situations. This takes practice and the following exercises are designed to assist emerging authors to flush out their characters before they begin to write about them.
Learn To Write About People Who Are Unlike You

Practice writing from different points of view in your daily journal. (If you don't have a daily journal, start one right away). Think of a traumatic or upsetting event that happened to you in the recent past. Write down everything you remember about it in first person, present tense. When you have completed this, rewrite the whole thing in third person, and then again in second person.
Find Out Who Your Characters Are

Ask the following questions about your characters:

* What do they like to eat? What don't they like to eat?
* What are their favorite colors?
* Do they like to read? What are their most treasured books?
* What motivates them?
* What do they do with their spare time?
* What is their family background?
* What is their education level?
* How do they dress?
* What kind of music do they listen to?
* Who are their friends? Enemies?
* Do they like animals?
* What does their favorite tee-shirt say?
* Do they have a cell phone? A blackberry?
* What kind of car do they drive?
* Do they like sports?
* Are they competitive?
* What is the condition of their teeth?
* How long is their hair?

Think of your characters as new friends you are getting to know and find out everything you can about them. Jot down your observations in a note book that you can refer back to when writing.
Discover How Your Characters React To Specific Situations

Play with your characters. Place them in different scenarios and explore their reactions.

How would your characters react to the following risky or challenging situations?

* Climbing a glacier
* Jumping out of an plane
* Sailing solo around the world
* Becoming a rock star
* Being stuck in an elevator
* Hosting a large dinner party
* Discovering he/she has a terminal illness

Naming Your Characters

Experiment with different names for your characters and don't be afraid to change their names in the middle of a story. As you grow more familiar with your characters, certain names will become more suited to their emerging personalities.

Once you know your characters inside out, they will begin to say things you don't expect, or do things you hadn't planned on. It is at this point that your story will take on a life of its own. The plot will emerge as a direct result of the actions of your characters and suddenly the writing will seem easy.

I think I will try to do this. I am fresh to writing a story, so I don't think it will be the best of details.

Im in :cool:

It might take me a week to think of something though.... :lol:

6 contestants. Any more?

Hey, man. The reason I gave it two weeks because like I said, folks are busy. And folks procrastinate. I started this morning at 7 after I came home from the strip club. I wrote 2 pages of freestyle story set up.

I'm in.

I may have to renege if I can't manage time, but I'll give it a shot. This will be fun!

That's the main reason I went with the 16 days vs 7 or 10. The older you get, the busier you get. Shit, like I said, it is spring break for me. Otherwise I have school papers to write:lol: I'm 1/3 of the way there, already (1000 words so far)

I was hoping you'd see it since your PM is off. I'll put you down. You too, Winslow Wong.

Bro, thanks for the headsup and invite.

I'm definitely in for this one. :dance::dance::dance:

I shall try, but I suspect it shall be far short of 3000 words. One of those open enders and all...

Who'll be the judge(s).

The fam here on BGOL. Afterwards I will post the VOTE thread on the board, probably get it stickied by one of the mods and let it go for maybe 10 days, maybe even 2 weeks (a lot of Colin Powells on this board). Then, I will post the results after the voting closes.

You wanna get in?

It will be better if the voting process be two weeks...

I still havent thought of an idea for the contest though....:smh:

Two week voting process sounds good.

You have to find a mindset. THink of someone, somewhere who deserves to go. Watch the news. Say that you are the father of the child killed in the Woodlawn drive by. Think of someone who did something to someone you know. The ideas are out there, just grab onto one.

I am nearly done with mine. I have 2300 of 3000 words. The problem is I don't want to rush the ending, and 700 words isnt enough to do a proper ending, so I am going to just write it and do some editing to the beginning details that don't matter.

I wrote a poem based on this idea back in 2006, I just fleshed it out and made it into its own story

Good deal. We have 11 contestants. The Turn in day is 25 March. Good luck everybody.

How is everybody doing?
I thought of a plot in my head but nothing has been written yet.
It's gonna be this weekend or nothing, been doing too many things at the same time...

No, nothing is due until June 25, so Monday after next. I already have mine done (the boss has been out all week). Just have to proof it, fix surface errors, maybe get someone else to proof it for me.

The next contest,Im going to host......

The topic will be scifi/cyberpunk

Havent really decided when Im going to do it though....

What exactly is cyberpunk? scifi I understand but cyberpunk? I got nothing.

Either way we have 12 contestants on this contest. I'm looking forward to it.

A question was posed to me of how people were to submit their stories to me. The easiest way is to bundle the Microsoft Word document in an rar file, use www.rapidgator.com free upload host and send me the link. From there I will use the word document to convert the format to www.freetexthost.com and a PDF document. DO NOT only send me a PDF because some times when you convert the PDF to word it has errors and I want to use freetexthost for accessibility to everyone's sake. Before I post the freetexthost or PDF links I will send it to each contestant so they can verify that it looks as they sent it (it took me a couple of days last time because of format translation issues).

The deadline is in two days. Monday at midnight (which is basically Tuesday almost.)
