YAOUNDE, July 27 (Reuters) - Boko Haram militants attacked Kolofata, a town in Cameroon's Far North Region near Nigeria, on Sunday and seized several people including the wife of Cameroon's Vice Prime Minister Amadou Ali, a military commander in the region said.

"The situation is very critical here now, and as I am talking to you the Boko Haram elements are still in Kolofata town in a clash with our soldiers," said Colonel Felix Nji Formekong, the second commander of Cameroon's third inter-army military region (RMIA3) based in the regional headquarters Maroua.

"Some of them have already taken away the wife of Vice Prime Minister Ahmadou Ali and her house help while the bodyguards of the Vice Prime Minister have succeeded in taking him out of the town to Mora," Formekong said, adding that there could be more casualties. Boko Haram Blamed in New Capture
Nigerian Islamist Insurgency Is Suspected of Kidnapping the Wife of Cameroon's Vice Prime Minister

Boko Haram kidnapped the wife of Cameroon's vice prime minister on Sunday, as the Nigerian Islamist insurgency escalated hostilities after five days of gunbattles with the neighboring army.

The incident is raising concerns that African politicians are falling into Boko Haram's cross hairs, and not just in Nigeria where the group was born.

Roughly 30 men brandishing guns burst into the home of Vice Prime Minister Ali Amadou in the far northern town of Kolofata on Sunday morning, said a colonel with the Cameroonian army on the scene. They killed three soldiers, and two civilians, before leaving with Mr. Amadou's wife, said the colonel.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Officials didn't disclose the name of Mr. Amadou's wife.

The attackers then assaulted the nearby home of the town's mayor, Lamine Seini Boukar, killing two paramilitary police officers and kidnapping Mr. Boukar. officials said.

"I can confirm that the home of Vice Prime Minister Amadou Ali in Kolofata came under a savage attack from Boko Haram militants," government spokesman Issa Tchiroma, who is also communications minister, told Reuters.

"They unfortunately took away his wife. They also attacked the Lamido's residence and he was also kidnapped," he said, adding that at least three people were killed in the attack.

Boko Haram and Cameroonian troops have exchanged gunfire across northern Cameroon since last week. Boko Haram is camped just across the border, in Nigeria's mountainous east.

Sunday's abductions are also raising fears that Boko Haram could strike at the very top of West African leadership. The two Cameroonians taken on Sunday mark the second and third politicians in the region to feel the heat of Boko Haram's insurgency in less than a week.

On Wednesday, a bomb in Nigeria struck a convoy carrying Muhammadu Buhari, a former military dictator. Mr. Buhari escaped unscathed.

But his near-death touched a raw nerve: Mr. Buhari is a powerful opposition leader in Nigeria's north, the same section of the country where many voters are eager to oust President Goodluck Jonathan. The two politicians faced off in Nigeria's latest election, in 2011.

When Mr. Jonathan won with 59% of the vote, compared with Mr. Buhari's 32%, the challenger's supporters rioted in the streets for days, leaving more than 800 people dead. The two are likely to face off again within six months, this time amid the escalating insurgency.

On Sunday, a bomb, believed to be the work of Boko Haram, killed five people, Police Commissioner Adenrele Shinaba said, as they were leaving a church. Separately, a female suicide bomber wounded two police officers, Mr. Shinaba said.
