Milky complexion could simply be the result of bright lighting and not Photoshop flourishes

image.jpg

White-hot superstar Beyoncé Knowles is taking fresh heat for a new pale-skinned photo promoting her last album.

The new mom, who weathered similar accusations of photo snow jobs in 2008 and 2011, is shown lying on a leopard print couch in a slinky black monokini, with straight blond hair, bleached eyebrows and nearly alabaster skin.

The milky complexion could simply be the result of extremely bright lighting and not Photoshop flourishes, critics conceded. But either way, some believe any amount of whitewashing sends a damaging message — and the star should know better by now.

"It’s like, Again? Are we here again? I think in a lot of ways shes culpable because there’s history there," said Lincoln Anthony Blades, founder of the popular race-conscious blog ThisIsYourConscience.com.

"She's not saying explicitly you have to lighten your skin, but it does carry that inherent message," he said.

It was summer 2008 when beauty behemoth L’Oreal denied accusations it digitally lightened Beyoncés honey-colored skin in an ad for hair dye. Last year, she faced criticism for the blond, unusually light-skinned photos accompanying her fourth solo album, simply titled “4.”

Ugandan-born British writer Yasmin Alibhai-Brown blasted Beyoncé for turning her back on her African-American roots.

"I despair for the youngsters who see those images," she wrote in London's Daily Mail.

Filmmaker D. Channsin Berry, whose documentary “Dark Girls” looks at issues facing black women with darker skin than their peers, told The News Beyoncé is “doing what she needs to do to be accepted worldwide and keep those sponsors happy.”

“I wish she had people around her telling her that God doesn’t make mistakes, that you are beautiful the way you are,” Berry said. “What does something like this do for a young girl who’s so impressionable and . . . says ‘Mommy, I want my skin to look like Beyoncé’s,’ that’s dangerous.”

Blades agreed and said he’s concerned about the rise in popularity of skin-bleaching creams.

In Harlem, Rochelle Mosley, the owner of Salon 804, said the singer is being given a hard time.

“That has been around since the beginning of time. Lighter has always gotten over,” said Mosley, a dark-skin woman. “I don’t think she’s trying to be a white woman. I think she’s trying to be herself.”

But stylist Ayanna Lockett, who also works at the same salon, disagreed:

“It bothers me,” she said, looking at the photo. “I think she went a little too far.”

Beyoncé’s publicist did not respond to a request for comment.

NO... :hmm:

Brandy's photos can be attributed to lighting. Beyonce's pics are on some extra shit (make-up, photoshop, etc...)

BEYONCE: I WISH I WAS BORN LATINA

Just to drive the point home, when she makes a statement such as the one above, she CLEARLY isn't talking about one of the millions of darker-skinned Latinas. All you have to do is recall the BLONDE HAIR she's constantly flaunting in your daughters' faces to see that.

To me, this chick is very talented, but extremely poisonous (on several levels). IMHO it would be wise to pay close attention to the imagery she presents to your kids for consumption. As for me, I refuse to pass off her shenanigans as mere art, there is intent behind what she does...

Chick know what to say for her audience so I'm kinda fifty/fifty on her comment considering who she was talking to. If it was a Black mag/blog she'd say "I"m proud of being Black!" But yet because of marketing her Loreal commercial says her skin comes from different areas "African American, American Indian, and French". :hmm: (I will admit though that Jennifer Lopez saying she wants her Puerto Rican music to reflect where she comes from and not having it classified as Music of Black Origin is way delusional.)

I've been saying it for years though that chick got an image complex, and this is not the first time an ad or poster has lightened her skin. Not saying it's her fault because she might not have signed off on it (even though people of as high regard as her have some say over their image) but the fact that she continues to let it happens says something. Her blond hair is not lost on me either, she started out with Wyclef in braids. Get a little money in your pocket, you too can have a room full of lace front wigs.

I bet you money chick's real self is in poor shape. Her hair malnourished (because after all you don't have to do anything to what you can't see), her skin blotchy (all that damn makeup!), and pores so clogged she need a case of Drain-o. I already hate this whole abundance of makeup thing going on but it's almost as though with the evolution of Beyonce the public has forgotten what she actually looks like. I wonder if Sean sees her for what/who she really is and likes it...or if he prefers the white girl hair toss.

I swear if I see pics of this girls child at age 4, hair slicker than a mutha, I'm going off. :hmm:

I guess I can see where you are coming from, but I just don't get why she gets so much more flack than anyone else. Show me a pop star that looks like they looked when they came out 10 years ago... Not Alicia Keys, not Queen Latifah, not Mary J Blige, not Brandy, not Maxwell, not Jill Scott, not Justin Timberlake it goes on. I am all for natural hair and I wish more of us embraced our natural locks, but she is by far not the only offender. I feel like people project their issues where there aren't necessarily issues. When I saw those photos for the album it didn't resonate to me oh she's trying to lighten up her skin to look white it came across as an artistic contrast with the lipstick and the rest of the composition. It's not like they took someone darkskin or even medium tone and turned them white, Beyonce, her mother and her sister are pretty light to begin with.

Yeah, I think it's safe t say that at the bare minimum, she has signed off on the images she displays. In my opinion it's not just marketing. As a mater of fact, you could look at a lot of factors in her body of work that are not only peculiar (to say the least), but could also be interpreted as downright creepy.

For example:

Her clothing line "House of Deréon" (children's wear):
hodgirls.jpg

Here is a famous depiction of Baphomet:

Here is a Baphomet Pentagram (upside-down five-pointed star):

... and here is "Sasha Fierce" (note the dress and the arm positions):

Here she makes the Pentagram symbol with her hands as the "horns", and her arms as the "ears":

Check out the Horned-Goat ring she often wears:

Not only do I think she knows what she's doing, I believe that she's counting on the fact that we don't know what she's doing...

True.

But like I said what bothered me about this is that it's not the first time, it's the second. (Probably more) Yes style can change, and I would expect it so. I'm not asking that she turns into this Erykah/India pro-African being but even Diana took the wig off. Honestly as far as her hair is concerned what really bothers me is the constant color, like if she get another wig the public will be like "oh no, that WASN'T her real hair?!" I'll be the first to admit I'd rather hear Solange sing than Beyonce, I'm not going to hold any celebrity to any higher standard. I simply just think that she isn't the greatest thing everyone makes her out to be. But I can respect her work ethic.

That said I just don't understand this mixed chick public persona but she shouts her blackness from her mouth. I guess what just rubs me the wrong way is it seems contradictory. [BTW I don't like how every pictures of Beyonce she wearing a wig, just like Kim from Real Housewives of Atlanta. It's ridiculous. Maybe I just don't like wigs.]

Not only do I think she knows what she's doing, I believe that she's counting on the fact that we don't know what she's doing...

:dunno:

I can't make excuses for that.

The motorcycle thing is just plain ugly. But we all know that a lot of bikers could be associated with things out west...which could be associated with the desert...which in this country means a skull... :dunno:

The hands on the head...modeling?

The ring...I need to see it moving, on camera, with a close up. Unless she puts her hand out and we get a clear image right side up. I mistook (with three other people) a fountain for a homeless man.

There might be something to this...there might not be...Everything (like the motorcycle thing) is either a changed interpretation of something devilish or something unclear (like the ring). I'm not going to stick up for something I don't know, but I need something a little more outright. I mean after all there are a ton of things with symbols on it that most people have no clue to the meaning of. But it looks cool.

I'll never understand why there's always so much negativity towards Beyonce. There's been thousands of pics and videos taken of this beautiful woman. They are all not going to be top notch. Everyone takes a bad picture at some time. Anyone willing to post their family album or high school pics?... Anyone?

However has anyone ever considered the variances of lighting? Studio, outdoors, on stage, backgrounds, time of year, her outfits, night vs. day, sunny day, evening, photographers filters, the photographers level of competence, just to name a few.

An in Beyonce's case there's questions about her hair, her intelligence, clothes, is her ass real......really people? This looking to find fault with this woman and other successful black artist needs to stop. It's no more than pettiness and possible jealousies. Its worse than crabs in a basket. :hmm:

That's the next phase to get our skin lighter to match the hair.

Technology is offering more and more ways to mask our African features.

Beyonce is good for black people.

Very classy.

You ain't gonna see her misrepresenting black women
by dressing and acting like a whore. Especially now
that she is a wife and a mother.

Vanity Fair Slammed
for Making Lupita Nyong’o
Appear Lighter

When the magazine gave a sneak peek as to what to expect in an upcoming issue, the
social media cavalry came out, accusing the magazine of lightening the star’s skin tone.

Face it. Lupita Nyong’o is the new “it” girl, and one can only imagine how many magazines are dying to feature her.

However, those who do get the opportunity should use Vanity Fair as an example of what not to do. The magazine included Nyong’o in a tweet on Wednesday about its upcoming issue’s Vanities section and is now under fire for what some people say is a case of making the star’s deep-chocolate skin tone appear lighter.

BeDcq02IcAEzBXd.jpg

The outrage is obvious, and it wouldn’t be the first time a magazine has been accused of "brightening" the complexion of a star of color. Black women from Beyoncé to Kerry Washington to Gabourey Sidibe have all appeared lighter in magazines.

In the case of Nyong’o, was it purposely done in Photoshop?

And if so, to what end?

Or did Vanity Fair just use some really odd or creative lighting?

You decide.

The darker she is the better she looks. Can't beat the natural.

And it's funny cause I just posted some pics of her today...from mags in Africa...and they all keep her original complexion, (or at least not lightened significantly).

I couldn't agree more. The lightening craze is somewhat troubling to me. I'm sure there is a myriad of reasons why people do it to themselves or their photos/vids, but it occurs to me that at the bottom of it is a rejection of something people have been socialized to believe is distasteful, unattractive . . .
