I started to ask this question a different way but i think this is the best way to ask it without a lot of bias ..

obviously all black directors started out pretty much around the same way and time and took kinda the same path ...

i thought about leaving out Spike cuz he had so many more flicks but quantity doesnt necessarily mean quality ....

so cast ur vote or drop ur reply .... it`s aday after the elections after all ....lol

By the By ... we have more black directors more than ever but they are 2 new to the game

to be included in this exercise not enuff material out yet ... plus these other guys crawled so they could run

which is evident by the kinda movies these newer black directors get the opportunity to make ...

no typical hood films there 1st time out the gate ...

y`all cant b serious ...? :puzzled:
Singleton is good but I think Fuqua is a better director based on their catalog. I find Spike Lee annoying especially when he puts himself into the characters and let them have his goofy swag. That last movie Spike did with denzel had so much potential unfortunately Spike Lee was involved.

Few others missing since we got a 1986 - 1998 spread for first films
ex. Townsend. Mario Van. Hudlins. Carl Franklin etc
Hughes Brothers ain't in the conversation??
For me - it’s Carl Franklin. And Townsend.
Then 1) Spike - especially if we include his documentary works.
2) Gary
3) Singleton
4) Fuqua

documentaries r not included .... movies only ...

I'd have to do some rewatches before I make a definitive choice, but I can say that list has some shockers on there for me.

Antoine Fuqua did Bait & that King Arthur movie :eek2:

F. Gary Gray did Be Cool & Law Abiding Citizen :eek2::eek2:

John Singleton did Abduction :eek2::eek2::eek2: That movie where they tried to make Jacob from Twilight into an action star.

Twilight dude shocked me too ...

LAC was so good tho ... sleeper hit out of all these ... Jamie`s acting was ehh as usual but great fucking movie ...

Olympus from Fuqua was the shit ... another shocker for me at the time ...

while carl and Robert got a few hits they dont even come close to the 4 on the list ...lol

Carl Franklin

Robert Townsend

Malcolm X, 4 Little Girls, Inside Man, Do the Right Thing, Bamboozled, Summer of Sam, Crooklyn AND 25th Hour. Spike is up there with the great in American Cinematic History.

I'd take Gary Gray at Number 2, with Fuqua as a VERY CLOSE 3.

I bet Fuqua has generated more revenue though.

I gotcha. You right as far as filmography. I was def going off a whole different criteria lol. Nothing objective about my response lol

based on your listed four and the “metrics” it’s Spike at the top imo by far
Then Fuqua - distant but significant second
Gray - a way behind in certain ways but in others more consistent
Singleton - solid but just not the volume of the others*

Which is why I immediately co-signed including Hughes Bros. Thanks for making sure their co and solo works are included

Hughes and Gray are about the same to me with Gary still in 3 I think…

not at all bro ...post one with the filmography that stacks up n we will give her her shine ..?...:puzzled:

we luv black excellence bro no matter the gender ...

Honorable mention Mario Van Peebles ...?

any luv ...?
Sweet Sweetback alone earns him a place in this thread. Even if he's at the bottom of the list, he still deserves the mention.

Dope thread. No love for Ryan Coogler tho?

naw ...he gotta get his weight up ... only 5 movies ...

ME17GYD2_o.jpg

Only 5 movies yes.
But those 5 movies were all home run hits outta the park. If we're talking box office numbers and critical acclaim, Coogler might be 1st or 2nd on the list.

Ava DuVernay isn't invited to this party.

And I'm not saying that cause she is a woman. I'm saying that cause A Wrinkle in Time so just that bad.

She had Disney & Oprah money and she still managed to make one of the most boring movies of the last decade.

The best part of that piece of shit movie was when the little CaC actor revealed his was a secret bad guy by chewing up all the scenery in a four block radius. That little motherfucker was doing Al Pacino quotes at that point.

That was the only part of that boring ass movie that I woke up for.

I said Mario and the Hudlins etc in my original - somewhat “misunderstood the assignment” - reply lol. But with updated clarification - nah. Mario is great. But look at his movie directing credits again and you won’t be thinking HM before any of the other folks offered here

And unless we giving niggas credit for they daddy’s work, then Mario directing career begins with NEW JACK CITY, my bro

** since this BGOL, perhaps he should get extra points for getting his dick wet as an actor playing young Sweetback lol

Opportunity - meaning the decades of impossibility when it comes to super gifted skilled reliable and responsible black filmmakers getting consistent feature directing work - is the issue with the thread beyond just sticking with the four (*Hughes’ being added?) brothers you started with.

I could say - “nigga what about Oscar Micheaux?! Cmon Bruh?!” Lmao

But honestly the ONLY other nigga that TRULY should be on this list based on who and HOW you having this discussion is Madea Perry Studios herself. And you even think about adding that mfkr you should preemptively Ban yourself lol. So don’t. Because we need you here lmbao

*don’t think they fit your criteria with only 5/6 feature films combined. I was including the TV work etc when I originally advocated for em
