A beer pub in the Bronx is not where you’d expect to find a tasty veggie burger. But New York is full of surprises. Not only does the veggie burger ($9.50) at the Bronx Ale House maintain the perfect texture — not too mushy but not too crumbly either — it also packs almost as much flavor as a burger made from actual meat. Chef Eric Hubbard’s recipe calls for bulgur, oats, peppers, onions, black beans and various spices, which give this veggie burger a serious kick. A slice of gooey mozzarella melts perfectly on the patty and provides a nice bit of relief from the spice, while a grilled red pepper adds a sweet touch to an already complex combination of flavors. Moist, spicy and sizable, these veggie burgers are made daily and come with hand-cut fries. If the 15 beers on tap at the Bronx Ale House aren’t reason enough to make the journey to Kingsbridge, the veggie burger certainly is.
