I have a question....what is being natural? (yeah I'm in curious mode)

I say that b/c I have seen dudes (and some chics) post about how a chic is all natural and all that and they show a pic of her and sometimes:

1) its a natural weave
2) her locs are blonde (or dyed a diff color)
3) lots of make up

and the like

so I'm trying to get an understanding of what's ppl's idea of natural.

Me personally...I don't think having a "natural looking" weave is natural but some ppl I have talked to do.

are braids w/ extensions natural?

let's discuss
 
To me natural is no makeup, no fake hair, no hair dye. I am almost natural except I wear nail polish and lipstick sometimes.

I think people think a weave is natural because under it is their natural hair with no chemicals...
 
I think natural, as far is hair, means not treated with chemicals-like a perm or a dye. For instance, my hair is natural because I don't perm it or dye it (anymore, lol). When I straighten it, its via heat not chemicals...

Wearing natural looking makeup doesn't make you have a "natural glow" natural to me is you washed your face and put some lotion on and left the house...

I know what I mean when I say a pair of "Naturals", though what I think are, some times, on closer inspection, aren't.

When I say she looks natural (after I have now seriously thought about it), I'm probably referring to someone really attractive with nice voluptuous curves that doesn't appear, to the naked eye, to be wearing something to artificially enhance the breast or booty.

HAIR. Such a difficult topic. I notice that Black men and women on and off these boards struggle with, or at least discuss/debate, the choices: perm, no perm; color, no color; lil add-on enhancement; or none; weave-the-fuck-out or the natural Fro.

Many of those discussions seem to arise out of attempts to define Black Beauty -- and whether such a definition should or should not be influenced by what white women look like or, perhaps, what "western culture' (I know, some will argue that white=western culture, but I beg to differ as American society is simply replete with the African American influence [anybody notice white women rushing to get injections in their lips and removing the constraints from their hips?) defines as positive attributes. Damn, did I digress? Well F*#k Colin.

HAIR. When I say she looks natural, I'm probably not referring to "weaved-the-fuck-out". I could, however, be referring to nice warm brown/black, with or without a lil bounce, that could be permed, could be fried, could be dyed; could have a little added to the top or side; or, could be just run your hands through it let me kiss your hot ass short and curly; or maybe even, bald.

Natural is a state of mind and every time mine gets in that state, funny, ole boi (if you know what I mean) knows it first!

I agree with Cleo...I would also add on something about what kind of products you use on your hair too. A lot of the products out there contain alcohol and other bad-for-you ingredients in it. Most people I consider "natural" use products that are made from organic products and/or not treated on animals, etc.

Yea, don't you think that's an understatement about you being in the curious mode:D
But I feel you though. It seems that in all the pictures posted of "Natural girls" they are trying to overcompensate for the fact that they are so-called natural. I feel what you are saying.
 
To me it goes a little deeper because I have met MANY "fake" natural folks. By fake I mean they advertise themselves as "natural", but the vibe you get from them is that their "natural" look and lifestyle are not genuine. Back in the 90's, damn near everybody was rocking locks and braids, but a lot of them were doing it for the same reason they were rocking Hawaiian silky weaves and huge damn Patti Labelle hairdos a couple of years prior, because it was "in". External shit exposes what a person is about to a certain degree (I gotta admit, I've never met a chick with a platinum blonde weave down to her ass, long ass fake nails and a pound of makeup that surprised me by being "real"), but it doesn't always tell you the whole story. Being obsessed with who is more "natural" than who is almost as bad as being obsessed with who is more "fake" than who.

I liked when my wife went natural because I didn't have to deal with all the extra BS associated with her NOT being natural (bad hair days fucking up nights out, not being able to do shit in a timely fashion because of the hours spent in the bathroom). I like the fact that these days she either ties the locks up or leaves the locks down and we are out. She never was into the makeup and nails shit, so she was always "natural" to a certain degree.

I will say this though, I don't know what the fuck is in those perms, but when she quit frying her hair, it seemed like she went through physical and mental withdrawal from the chemicals as if the shit were a drug. Her skin around her scalp dried out, her face broke out and she was damn near fiending for some chemicals. It stayed that way for a couple of weeks before she calmed down. Have other females that quit the perm game had that type of reaction? When she stopped frying her hair, her skin got better, her attitude got better and her hair grew like it never had before. Something ain't right in that shit y'all put on your heads.
