"the fakers are fucked".

that's the general consensus. their hands are tied so bad, it's gonna take some harry houdini type shit to make this team over.

i enjoy a good puzzle now and again, but this figuring out the fakers' shit is like a rubik's cube for GMs.

i encourage all basketball fans (and fakers fans) to get in here and show what they got. put your knowledge of the business to the test.

RULES

first and foremost, i remained as open-minded as possible. i understand that jerry buss and fakers fans desperately want to keep tobe, but does that leave the fakers with enough healthy, attractive trade bait to obtain enough competitive pieces? NO.

second, there are some very compelling free agents this summer. my top choice would probably be gerald wallace. but this is NOT a question of simple spending. jerry buss can go over the salary cap (again), but within reason.

third, the trades i suggested are realistic, in terms of all the money and numbers fit. anyone can say player X for player Y, but can you make the numbers fit? in the end, of course all teams would have to agree.

fourth, tobe would have to agree to waive his no-trade clause.

let's begin.

FREE AGENTS

1) fakers do NOT re-sign:

william parker
aaron mckie
shammond williams

this gives the fakers $5M to spend on re-signing luke walton.

2) fakers complete a trade with the indiana pacers:

tobe
vladimir radmanovic

for

jermaine o'neal
jamal tinsley

the fakers now have their starting lineup:

andrew bynum
jermaine o'neal
lamar odom
maurice evans
jamal tinsley

starting 5 salary: $41.5M

3) complete a trade with the minnesota timberwolves:

kwame brown
2007 nba draft 19th pick

for

trenton hassell
mike james

minnesota is already loaded with young backcourt players, and probably will be signing a PG in the draft. the fakers need experienced backcourt players for their bench, and minnesota would welcome kwame brown's expiring contract.

4a) if healthy, re-sign chris mihm for NO more than $5M per season.

chris mihm is a free agent, but due to a long rehab, i doubt that he could command more than that.

4b) if chris mihm is NOT healthy, offer mikki moore $5M per season.

the fakers will need an experienced C for the bench, or to take andrew bynum's place if he does not continue to develop.

5) re-sign ronny turiaf at $1.5M per year

you now have a full second squad:

chris mihm
ronny turiaf
luke walton
trenton hassell
mike james

second squad total salary: $21.5M

TOTAL SALARY: $63M (i estimate that will put the fakers over next year's cap by about $5M)

to round out your practice squad, you still have:

brian cook
jordan farmar
sasha vujacic

at a cost of an additional $5M, putting you approximately $10M over the cap. but you have a competitive athletic squad with a blend of youth and experienced veterans. good length in the frontcourt, speed in the backcourt.

"fuck bitch kupchak!"

that's another common thing you hear these days.

but no matter what your sentiments are regarding the fakers GM, the fact remains that significantly tweaking the fakers roster is easier said than done.

in order to appease the fakers fans who insist on keeping tobe, i wrestled with the task for a minute. here's what i came up with.

first, it should be noted that IF tobe must be kept AT ALL COSTS, that the make-up of the team itself must change. this fakers lineup, though it assumedly would run the triangle, will have to be stacked with deep threats, because there isn't sufficient trade bait to secure a low post scorer with bonafides.

the fakers will NOT re-sign free agents:

william parker
aaron mckie
chris mihm
shammond williams

the fakers will re-sign free agents:

luke walton

1) the fakers will complete a trade with the new york knicks:

lamar odom
kwame brown
brian cook
sasha vujacic

for

jerome james
david lee
quentin richardson
steve francis

2) the fakers complete a trade with the minnesota timberwolves

vladimir radmanovic

for

mike james

the fakers starting squad will be:

jerome james
david lee
tobe
maurice evans
mike james

your starting 5 has an estimated combined salary of $33M.

tobe gets easier shots from the SF position in the triangle, david lee is a strong rebounder, and you have a big C to take up space in the paint. maurice evans and steve francis give you an athletic backcourt and additional cutters who can finish around the rim.

this completes the second unit for the fakers:

andrew bynum
ronny turiaf
luke walton
quentin richardson
steve francis

the second team has an estimated combined salary of $32.5M

that's a total estimated salary of $65.5M and you still have to sign 2 more players to fill out the roster. maybe chris mihm and shammond williams?

that should leave you at least $10M over the cap. the downside is that all of the salaries you picked up from the knicks are locked up through 2010.

I'm sticking with this one:

L.A. Lakers/New Orleans Hornets Trade Breakdown

Outgoing

Kobe Bryant
6-6 SG from Lower Merion (HS)
31.6 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 5.4 apg in 40.8 minutes

Brian Cook
6-9 PF from Illinois
6.9 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 1.0 apg in 15.7 minutes

Incoming

Peja Stojakovic
6-9 SF from Serbia-Montenegro (Foreign)
17.8 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 0.9 apg in 32.8 minutes

Bobby Jackson
6-1 PG from Minnesota
10.6 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.5 apg in 23.9 minutes

Chris Paul
6-1 PG from Wake Forest
17.3 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 8.9 apg in 36.8 minutes

Successful Scenario
Due to L.A. Lakers and New Orleans being over the cap, the 25% trade rule is invoked. L.A. Lakers and New Orleans had to be no more than 125% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Trade ID#: 3842045.

Then the Lakers pick up Bonzi Wells in free agency..and the Hornets pick up Steve Blake (or Chucky Atkins).

The Lakers will look like this

Starters:

PG: Chris Paul
SG: Bonzi Wells
SF Luke Walton
PF: Lamar Odom
C: Andrew Bynum

Bench:

Peja Stojakovic
Bobby Jackson
Ronny Turiaf
Jordan Farmar
Maurice Evans

The Hornets look like this:

Starters:

PG: Steve Blake (or Atkins)
SG: Kobe Bryant
SF Desmond Mason
PF: David West
C: Tyson Chandler

Bench:

Jannero Pargo
Rasul Butler
Marc Jackson
Brian Cook
Cedric Simmons

Both teams stay competitive. Kobe gets a number 2 dude in Mason and a above average center in Chandler. They would probablly have to bring in another PG.

Phil would have a nice young team to work with,,and if he doesn't like it there would be other coaches that he could use. (Rudy T. JVG, Larry Brown.)

RF,

i wanted to stick with my original too, but i decided to tweak it given the latest developments and likelihood that the entire roster stands to be upheaved.

i'd like to request that you make a couple adjustments to your trade too.

new orleans has been working hard to stay at or under the salary cap, and they have been pretty successful.

that said, IN YOUR SCENARIO, the hornets would have to re-sign unrestricted free agent desmond mason, and that will increase their salary expense.

additionally, the new orleans bench would have to re-sign unrestricted free agent marc jackson. jannero pargo has the player option of free agency too.

so in addition to re-signing those players, they'd also have to make a convincing offer to steve blake or chucky atkins.

so my question is: after working to get under the salary cap for 2007-08, would they blow their wad in a single season like this and end up WAY OVER the cap?

on the fakers side of your trade scenario, the fakers would have to re-sign luke walton. how much would you offer him? they'd also have to make an offer to ronny turiaf. how much for him?

bonzi wells, after the meltdown in houston has a player option, so how much will he be available for? and would the fakers want to gamble on him?

BUT GOOD STUFF so far.

My logic is this:

The best way to get a big salary off the books is to break it up into smaller ones. You essentially are trading Kobe for three players. Each of the three are tradable assets in their own right.THey are also lesser contracts in terms of Time (Peja's would be for 4, while Paul and Jackon would be for two.) So there is some cap relief coming there.

Luke Walton knows his role. I mean he is born and raised in the triangle offense. I don't think he is dumb enough to think that he would get much playing time, let alone be a starter anywhere else.

Same with Bonzi. Talented cat, but how long do you put up with dude. Both get mid-level deals, but Bonzi gets a one year deal with some incentives.

This way, you get four decent sized contracts off the books in two years.

The fans will come to the games if they are winning. and I think this is a talented squad that has depth. I'd be willing to eat the money if they make the playoffs...especially if thy get to the second round (a place they havent been since Shaq was there.)

Personally I think NO would jump at Kobe because it would put people in seats and they need something like that since they are going back to their old area next year.

BTW-you'll notice Kwame is not in the picture. We buy him out and his numbers come off the books. If I'm gonna run that team..we start fresh.

How To Get The Lakers On The Phone For Kobe
Authored by Christopher Reina - 30th May, 2007 - 6:07 pm

The Lakers wanted to trade Shaquille O’Neal to the Eastern Conference and accomplished that and will likely attempt to do the same if they decide to trade Kobe Bryant. Since any team will have their roster largely decimated in order to acquire Bryant, then he would be thankful to climb back to the Finals in the clearly much less talented conference.

Their number one priority, however, has to be getting the most value back possible and below is what Andrew Perna and I believe it would take to get the Lakers on the phone. Several teams were omitted, such as the Cavaliers, Raptors and Heat since those teams don't have any players beyond their own franchise centerpiece to make a trade work.

Bryant remains the best player in the game and is a long ways away from no longer being a member of the Lakers and as surprising as Wednesday's news was, it would be shocking if 24 isn't in Los Angeles at the start of this season.

I'm amazed that any GM would make some of the trades below. Surely attendance can't be that bad.

^^They wouldn't..I think he is showing the problem with trying to trade someone with a contract as large and incentive packed as Kobe Bryant is..
