Former Major League player Tony Phillips has died of an apparent heart attack.

Phillips, 56, passed away Wednesday in Arizona.

The veteran utility man played 18 season in the majors for six different teams, most notably with the Oakland Athletics as a member of the 1989 World Serieschampionship team. He made the final defensive out in the Athletics' sweep of the San Francisco Giants during the earthquake-interrupted Series.

He retired in 1999 at the age of 40.

The A’s released a statement Friday that funeral services are pending.

"The Oakland A's lost another member of our family this week with the unexpected passing of Tony Phillips," A's president Michael Crowley said in a statement. "We all have fond memories of Tony making the final play in the A's 1989 World Series. He was a remarkable player. Our thoughts are with his family."

Phillips, who played mostly second base and outfield, played every position but catcher during his tenure. He finished as a .260 career hitter with 2,023 hits and 1,300 runs in 2,161 games.

“The Detroit Tigers were saddened to learn of the passing of Tony Phillips," the Tigers said in a written statement. "Tony was an exciting player to watch and became a fan favorite during his years in Detroit. The Tigers organization extends our deepest sympathies to Tony’s family.”

Wow he played for my hometown. 56 is mad young. Thanks for the work and life lessons.

R.I.P and my condolences to his family
