Barack Obama endorses Joe Biden for president saying his 'empathy and grace' are needed in the White House - as he praises Bernie Sanders as an 'American original' and issues full-throated condemnation of Republicans promising to be on campaign trail 'as soon as I can'
  • President Obama is expected to endorse his former vice president, Joe Biden, for president later Tuesday
  • Biden got the endorsement of his final rival, Bernie Sanders, on Monday, formally making him the Democrats' presumptive presidential nominee
  • Since Sanders dropped out of the primary race last week, Democrats have been chomping at the bit to get Obama involved in taking on President Trump

President Obama asked the Democrats to unite behind Joe Biden in a 12-minute video Tuesday as he finally stepped into the 2020 campaign.

Obama said Biden represents the right kind of leadership 'the kind of leadership guided by knowledge and experience, honesty and humility, empathy and grace.'

'That kind of leadership doesn't just belong in our state capitals and mayors offices, it belongs in the White House,' Obama said. 'And that's why I'm so proud to endorse Joe Biden for president of the United States.'

Obama did his part to pull the Democratic Party together calling Bernie Sanders an 'American original' and said Sanders' 'bold ideas' would be needed in order to fix the American economy for the second time in 12 years.

He said that what Biden and Sanders have in common is that they agree that change needs to occur.

'And that only happens if we win this election,' Obama warned.

'Because one thing everybody has learned right now is the Republicans occupying the White House and running the U.S. Senate are not interested in progress, they're interested in power,' the former president said.

In the video, Obama said picking Biden to be his vice president was one of the 'best decisions I ever made,' and the ex-president called the presumptive Democratic nominee 'a close friend.'

Obama's nod came one day after Bernie Sanders made a surprise appearance on Biden's livestream and endorsed the former vice president, formally making him the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

Since Sanders dropped out of the 2020 Democratic race last week, Democrats have been chomping at the bit to get Obama involved in the race to take on President Trump.

For Obama, it's personal.

While Obama was in office Trump - then the host of NBC's 'The Apprentice' - was a constant Twitter critic and fueled the so-called 'birther' conspiracy theory, which suggested the Democratic president wasn't legitimate because he was born in Africa, not Hawaii.

Obama, the country's first black president, was born in Hawaii to a white American mother and an African father.

During the 2020 cycle, Obama has stuck to the sidelines, wanting to appear that he wasn't interfering in the primary contest - despite Biden serving for eight years as his vice president.

Trump tried to take advantage of that silence last seek as Biden was sewing up the nomination.

'And I don't know why President Obama hasn't supported Joe Biden a long time ago,' Trump said from White House podium Wednesday, several hours after Sanders announced he was suspending his campaign. 'There's something he feels is wrong,' Trump claimed.

(CNN)Former President Barack Obama will endorse Joe Biden on Tuesday, a source familiar with the plans tells CNN.
Obama will make the endorsement of his former vice president in a video message, offering why he believes Biden is the candidate needed at this moment of crisis in America, a person close to the former president says.
The endorsement reunites the former running mates and positions Obama, whose endorsement of Biden was seen as a forgone conclusion once Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders dropped out of the race last week, to be one of Biden's most powerful surrogates in the race against President Donald Trump.
It also marks the public re-emergence of Obama into the political arena. The former president kept a low public profile throughout much of the Democratic nomination fight, but he was active behind the scenes.

Two people familiar with Obama's video say it is intended as more than a simple endorsement of his friend and former vice president. His message is designed to address this particular moment in America and around the world, particularly in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
Obama will acknowledge how frightened people are and explain why he believes Biden is the right person to lead the country in this time of crisis, the sources said, and the candidate who must defeat Trump.
Obama will also speak directly to progressives, praising the spirit of their movement before outlining why he believes they should embrace Biden's candidacy. The former president will also offer a full-throated praise of Sanders and noting what his candidacy has meant for the pursuit of liberal ideals.
Obama in November said he had spoken to all of the candidates during the campaign, often giving them advice both before they announced their bid and after they dropped out. Advisers to the former president said his advice was often the same: Consider why you believe you should be president, what impact it will have on your family and whether you can actually win.

"We have a field of very accomplished, very serious and passionate and smart people who have a history of public service," Obama said at a private fundraiser in late 2019. "Whoever emerges from the primary process, I will work my tail off to make sure they are the next president."
Obama had long said he would get behind the eventual nominee, but the former president's deep affection for Biden was well known to all those who ran against the former vice president this year. Biden even jokingly posted an homage to Obama on "Best Friends Day" in 2019, featuring a friendship bracelet that featured the names "Joe" and "Barack".
That relationship, though, did not keep Obama from giving counsel to other candidates.
As Sanders worked to determine the future of his campaign, Obama and the Vermont senator spoke multiple times, a source familiar with the conversation told CNN. Sanders endorsed Biden on Monday in a livestream, pledging to help him defeat President Trump.
"We need you in the White House. I will do all that I can to see that that happens, Joe," Sanders said to Biden.
In the few moments where Obama did speak out about the race, the former president warned voters of worrying too much about the bruising nature of a primary, reminding them that he and then-Sen. Hillary Clinton had a tough primary in 2008.

Biden didn't want in in 2016..

That's the "official" account.

2016 was promised to Billary. That's why they were so upset with Bernie challenging her.

Had Biden chose to run, he would have connected with those CAC in battleground states that voted for Chump to spite Billary.

She really was/is the most polarizing candidate to run in our lifetime.

If he ran... .there is no way Trump would have had a chance. Trump won cause it was literally the perfect storm of events... Basically the complete opposite of perfect storm events that got Obama elected.

Not really. She WON the popular vote. Another reason to get rid of the electoral college but that's another topic for another day.

Biden moved out of the way like he was supposed to. Bernie is the one who fucked shit up with his myopic and selfish actions.

How in the world can you consider Hillary more polarizing than trump?

Never said anything about the popular vote. I mentioned battleground states.

Billary didn't even campaign in Michigan in 2016

As opposed to endorsing Donald?

Your sarcasm is misplaced. Ex-Presidents for fear of showing favoritism rarely endorse when there is more than one candidate associated with his party still in the race. When the last candidate standing, Bernie Sanders, dropped out Obama then felt free to endorse Biden. :hmm:

hey i have a serious question.is it possible for obama to become the vice president?
I actually believe he could, however he wouldn't be able to run again. He may be able to take over as President should something happen to Biden.

This of course has never happened nor been challenged, however I do t believe there is anything in writing that says an Ex President couldn't. I believe the writing refers to succession.

Hypothetically under the 22 and 12 amendment...... there is a loophole..

Under the 12.... "no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States."

Under the 22 - "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once."

Obama would fit under the exclusion under the 12 because he is a two term president and is constitutionally ineligible of running again...

but the loophole is that under the 22.... it states you can't be elected as president for a third term.. See the loophole is that The prohibition is from being elected president, not from actually serving as president.

It is legally possible for a two term President to subsequently become President by being the Vice President, Senate Pro Temp, Speaker of the House, Sec State or anyone in the line of succession when a President Resigns, dies or becomes incapacitated. Meaning that if Obama was nominated as Secretary of State and the President, Vice-President and everyone else died .. He would become president.... and there is nothing stopping Biden from nominating Obama as Secretary of State. Because of this... Technically Obama is constitutionally eligible to become President... meaning he is eligible to be Vice President ..

But if they did this....

That battle is going all the way to the US Supreme Court....

Joe Biden in 2016 was way better and maybe he could of won and beat trump

But the problem is Trump was riding the anti-establishment pro nationalist wave that took over the world. From Brazil to the Philippines. People were tired of globalist.

Joe Biden is would have still been considered the establishment elite class. Neo-Liberal Globalist.

So it’s hard to say if he would of beat trump but he would have stand a much better chance in key battlegrounds states.

For more insight check this video.

With the number if disaffected republicans in the Midwest, coupled with Trumps presidency now paralleling to what Jimmy Carter was going through this time in his term, a rotten egg sandwhich can beat Trump. A warm body with a pulse is just an upgrade :D

Yes that is true but you also have the Bernie Bros and the Far left that will stay home.

Either way it’s going to be a interesting election. If you thought 2016 was a Joke. I can’t wait to see what kind of crazy ness we will see.

Especially Trump crazy ass. You know he is going to go hard and will do anything to win. Who remembers the Clinton abusers and then after that trump dump them to the curve :)

The big difference in this campaign than 2016 will be The Obama machine... Which is better than the Clinton machine...

Obama needs get Hilary and Bill to stand down this election campaign.... Their run is over... No interviews .... Just show up at the convention and bounce..

Obama machine was a big coalition like black, young voters and the left wing. He united everyone back in 2008.

Fast Foward to the 2020. Obama just has the black vote. And I honestly just think it’s black women. Black men have been trending away from the democrats as most either do not vote or they vote for the GOP.

Young Voters and the Far left are not going to support a Corporate Democrat like Joe Biden.

Which is why if the democrats really want to win. Make Bernie Sanders VP.

Obama endorsement is nice but it does not means much just like in 2016
