All four victims were found dead at the scene after at least one shooter opened fire on the crowd of hundreds during the shocking attack at Willie’s Bar and Grill on St. Helena Island just before 1 a.m., the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said.

“Upon arriving at the scene deputies made contact with a large crowd of people, several of which were suffering from gunshot wounds,” the statement read.

“It was learned that hundreds of people were at the location when the shooting occurred. Multiple victims and witnesses ran to the nearby businesses and properties seeking shelter from the gunshots,” the statement continued.

No arrests have been made, but authorities say they are “investigating persons of interest.”

The victims were rushed to the hospital by Beaufort County EMS on Sunday morning.

Their names have not yet been released, and the exact circumstances behind the shooting are not known at this time, the sheriff’s office said.

Population
  • Total population: According to the 2021 Census, the population of St. Helena was 4,439. This figure had decreased by 2.1% since the 2016 census.
  • Declining numbers: Since 2000, the island has consistently had more deaths than births, leading to a shrinking population. Outward migration, particularly by younger residents seeking work abroad, also drives the decline.
  • Aging population: St. Helena has a significantly aging demographic. In 2021, over half of the St. Helenian residents were over 50. The number of residents aged 65 and over has been rising due to increasing life expectancies and former residents returning to the island.
  • Population density: The population density is low, at roughly 94.5 people per square mile (36.5 per km²).
  • Urbanization: In 2023, approximately 40.7% of the total population lived in urban areas. The capital, Jamestown, is the largest urban center.
Ethnicity and language
  • Ethnic composition: The people of St. Helena are of mixed heritage, with ancestry traced to European (mostly British), African, and South and East Asian peoples. The population is historically comprised of British sailors, East India Company settlers, African slaves, and laborers from China and India. Most "Saints," as the islanders are known, identify as British.
