ASUS’ Eee Pad Transformer Prime, the second-gen Transformer, may have its launch pushed back into December, so as to arrive running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich according to the latest rumors. Google has agreed to help ASUS develop ICS for the Tegra 3 based Transformer Prime,*DigiTimes‘ supply chain sources reckon, in an attempt to persuade the company not to shift its focus to Windows 8*tablets instead.

Google had previously been ignoring Taiwanese brands, the sources allege, giving little assistance in upgrading Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablets to the new 4.0 release of the platform. However, with Windows 8 tablets on the ASUS roadmap – among others – for the second half of 2012, it seems the search giant is looking to ways it can cement loyalty.

That loyalty is much needed, given Honeycomb tablet sales have been relatively underwhelming so far in comparison to, say, Apple’s iPad. Android lead Andy Rubin confirmed last month that there are*approximately 6m Honeycomb tablets in the wild, higher than previous estimates but still not enough to satisfy the Google exec. “Six million is pretty healthy but it is not 30 million” Rubin conceded, suggesting that “obviously we need to get there.”

The ASUS Transformer Prime was initially expected to launch on November 9, according to a leaked roadmap from the company, and has already been spotted clearing the FCC*complete with NVIDIA’s new Tegra 3 chipset. Now, the sources maintain, it will drop in early December, running Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box rather than Honeycomb. That delay – if true – is disappointing, but we imagine most people would prefer to have ICS even if it demands a little extra patience.

Got damnit!!!! I was waiting for this shit to drop 'cause i'm actually ready to grab a table now!! FUKK!!

this is a good thing. Will probably be the first tab to ship with ICS.

IS IT WORTH IT TO WAIT OR JUST GET THE I GEN JOINT?? WHAT SO SPECIAL ABOUT THIS ICE CREAM THING:confused:

I would wait. The Prime will have a full ubs port for connecting everything from hard drive to game controllers. And its lighter and thinner. Faster processor too.

Tim, why wouldn't ICS be able to be dl'd on existing Android Tablets?

It will be. But the prime is a major update over the existing transformer in terms of hardware.

but the first gen transformer already has a usb port right? so they will both be running ics eventually so whats the huge hardware update besides a lil speed?

Its thinner, lighter, and faster, plus its supposed to have the Android 4.0 Operating system which is supposed to have been designed with Tablets in mind, the processor is a '5 core'(truly a quad with an extra core to help the system with overall performance) and Nvidia is throwing their 'strength behind it, don't be surprised if you hear them announce some type of collab with this and their gaming development program RE: The Way Its Meant To Be Played (TWIMTBP)!

No USB port on the original. Size is also a difference.

I'm curious about those Windows 8 tablets...fuck Google

Anyone know the dimensions of the Prime?

Well, that day has come, and so have the juicy details. We just got word that the tablet will go on sale worldwide in December, starting at $499 with a beefy 32GB of storage, moving up to $599 for a 64GB model. (That signature keyboard dock you see up there will cost $149.) In addition to those basic specs Mr. Shih revealed last month, we now know this has a 1280 x 800, Super IPS+ Gorilla Glass display with a 178-degree viewing angle and a max brightness of 600 nits. It also packs 1GB of RAM, GPS, a gyroscope, SonicMaster audio and a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera. Rounding out the list is an 8MP shooter with an auto-focusing f/2.4 lens and a back-illuminated CMOS sensor that captures 1080p video. Touch-to-focus is also an option here, and ASUS claims a 30 percent boost in color enhancement over competing tabs.

As for battery life, we initially heard reports of 14.5-hour runtime, but ASUS is now saying the tablet alone can squeeze out 12 hours thanks to a 22Wh battery, and that the dock will add an additional six hours of juice. In addition, the slimmed-down, 1.2-pound dock brings all the other benefits the last-gen model offered, including a touchpad, USB 2.0 port and full-sized SD slot. Software-wise, it'll ship with Android 3.2 and apps such as SuperNote and Polaris Office, and we're told we'll learn more about that ICS update in "early December."
