Arum on Cotto's Options: Chavez, Canelo, Martinez, More

WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto plans to rest and spend time with his family for the next couple of weeks. After the holidays are over, Cotto is going to sit down with Top Rank to discuss the next move for his career. Cotto's contract with Top Rank expires on December 31st. The Puerto Rican superstar has already pledged to remain with Top Rank until the end of his career.

"Bob Arum is my promoter and he will always be my promoter," Cotto said.

Arum would like to match Cotto against WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., but went over some of the other possible names being thrown around, like Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Sergio Martinez.

"Cotto deserves to fight for another title and Chavez, Jr. is a good choice. It could be for the spring of next year, probably in Las Vegas. Forget Mayweather, Jr., for now. He wants to fight [Manny] Pacquiao and we are focused on making this fight. Canelo is still too young to fight Cotto and Sergio Martinez could be an interesting fight, but he plans to fight on March 17. We'll see. Let's take one thing at a time," Arum told Lester Jiminez.

Also show interest in a Martinez fight and he will open up his schedule.

Cotto: No Doubt I Would Beat Pacquiao in a Rematch

Last Saturday in New York's Madison Square Garden, WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30KOs) avenged his 2008 TKO loss to Antonio Margarito. After a great display of boxing, Cotto stopped Margarito in the tenth round. The Mexican boxer's right eye was swollen shut and the ringside doctors would not allow him to continue. There is one more defeat that Cotto wants to avenge - a November 2009 TKO loss to Manny Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38KOs).

Cotto credits his new team, which includes Cuban trainer Pedro Diaz, as being the difference in his style and the building blocks to rebuilding his career. The star of Puerto Rico has a firm belief that Pacquiao would lose a rematch. When they clashed in 2009, Cotto was dropped twice and took a beating before he was stopped in the twelfth round.

"I have no doubt about it [that I would beat Pacquiao in a rematch]. With the right encouragement and with the people that are now in my team, we have no doubt that," Cotto told Esteban Pagan.

Dude is delusional, trying to tie up his retirement money or he realizes he fought the wrong fight with Pac and sees the Marquez blueprint. I doubt he has the brain power/toughness to pull it off so he needs to fall back.

This does seem like Arum pulling strings to set everything up to kill the Mayweather fight with 3 options on his plate... JMM III, Bradley and now, Cotto II.

Cool. Cotto is going to look to get revenge against another fighter that beat him. I know he wants that bad. I kind of saw that happening too. I just don't know if Manny is willing to move up to make that fight. I think Manny has pretty much decided 144 is as high as he wants to go.

PBF is going to probably fight another GBP fighter anyways. Maybe Lou will work something out with him. But it doesn't look like PBF will be fighting any of Arum's fighters. Which is probably fine with Floyd.

I would love to see if Cotto could even the series up.Cause manny beat him down last time they met.

Chavez needs to beat a fighter better than a former contender for me. I think he has the tools. But I need to see more.

I have my money on Pac v Bradley then Pac v Cotto and at the same time Margarito v Chavez then Cotto v Chavez. Top Rank 2012...
