I just found this on MSN.com. It's a pretty interesting article about being a stickler for proper use of the language. I can't tell you how much it irks the shit out of me to see/read someone's poor grammar. Seeing the word YOUR used in place of YOU'RE and TO in place of TOO are a couple examples...:lol::hmm::hmm::lol:... Anyway, check this out and let us know if you are in fact a Grammar Snob.

Oh my goodness, cats be killing me with this shit on the main board. And what make it worse is that folks going into college these days don't know the difference between some of these words, (especially the three 'there' incarnations), let alone the grown ass folks here.

For me it's not a thing about being educated or well read it's just that this is shit you learn when you're young. Shit you're suppose to retain like 2 + 2 = 4.


Makes me wonder.
 
How can we separate the difference the people who dont know when or how to use the words and the people who type and are just to lazy to type the words correctly. I know when to use your and you're but i have become a lazy typist and always use "your".
 
On an anonymous message board, it doesn't really phase me.. but watching our collegiate "student"-athlete interviews on TV after each game during March Madness has been a cringe-fest.

Good question. It's really hard to tell. I just wish those who know the correct words would use them more often. That MIGHT influence others to follow suit...

Them titties are the truth, eh? She's a local. For a good year I've been wanting to squirt some baby oil between those puppies, mush 'em together, and plow them 'til the cows come home. I got a good thing at home, however, so I've just been fantasizing from afar.

My girl visits the board every now and then, so that's pretty much all I can say, lol.

I sometimes interchange the variations of there.... I try to be aware of this when i'm writing....
 
Yes I am. Some BGOL members drive me crazy with obvious grammatical errors and constant improper use of language. The excuse is that it's just a porn board, but I'm less likely to take someone seriously when they try to make a serious point. If that makes me a 'snob' or 'elitist', so be it; I can live with that.

I'm not saying that everything I write is perfect, but I try to make sure I represent myself well no matter what I'm writing or where it ends up.

I also recognize that there are those who intentionally write in an awkward fashion, but I can't understand that either.

Exactly! I hate it when you see story and its 1 paragraph that just runs on forever. That and sentences that are so poorly structured you think it was written by a preschooler. An you have no idea what the person is trying to say. :hmm:

And AOwn is on point about presenting oneself. I know our e-personas could be some made up thing it just gets me that here we have a large group of Black people, (yes I went there), who act as though they are the shit, (BGOL egos need a NY Times Bestseller slot), but basic knowledge gets lost.

If you don't know, educate yourself. But all of this big talk and big plans I see running around on the board can't be achieved if you can't find the proper language in which to negotiate.



I guess this hits home for me a little too deep as I try to further the education of my parents and I get told "I'm not learning anymore. I've made it this far with what I know, I don't need to know anything else." :hmm: Sometimes this is the feeling I get here and it just irritates me to my core.

Man, I thought it was just me. It annoys the hell out of me to see people use these words the wrong way.

I agree with melonpecan...that's basic stuff that you're supposed to learn early in the game. :smh: :angry:
 
I think it depends on the situation in which grammar is used. I know that I honestly dont really pay a lot of attention to it here because its just a forum to me... But being in college, I do use proper grammar on an every day basis when typing my papers and conversing with my professors.

It takes me about 20 minutes to send one text cuz I gotta put all my . and , and capitals and :smh:

I mean even when I write in slang it's like correct slang:confused:

The only time I mess up is when I'm IMing cuz then I don't really double check what I'm typing lol

Edit: I also get very annoyed when people write aaaaaaaaaaaaaall in slang ... it's like "wtf are you trying to say?":angry:

^^^ Good thing I proofread a text I was going to send this girl last night. Instead of typing HOW when I was responding to her I typed HOE...If I didn't check it before sending it would have been and interesting night...:lol:...I also caught an error in one I was going to send my cousin earlier. I typed THING when I really meant THINK. Good thing I proofread it before sending it though.
