Are department stores secretly racist?

Is the problem here that the sales assistance was insensitive or that the department store does not provide a social service in ensuring that all size customers are catered for?
I'm not in retail, but I'm guessing that to make a big dress is more expensive than a small dress, but the retail price is exactly the same....That given, if I could select a demographic to sell to based on no other criteria than maximising profits and I could produce enough to sell to only skinny models , then why wouldn't I????

No they are overtly racist. You didn't notice when they were following you around the store? Also, as per the article, look up NUDS.

They are, even though its a good mix of mostley white and black associates. The white associates tend to try to "help" you out more but really are watching your every move making sure you dont steal shit.

there is some truth to the demographics thing. (but yeah they are racist)

i've learned this traveling from state to state. availability of products vary based upon the demographics.

in cleveland st. johns bay is not a big seller.(using this as an example) but sean john is so(due to the much larger urban population) you'll see a larger line of sean john products and few to none of st johns bay.

in western nc, st. john bay is the biggest thing out there (white family type majority shoppers) so you'll see more of their products and a very small corner with a few sean john items.

My 9 year old son the other day asked my why the lady in the store keeps following him around and staring at him whenever he picks anything up ... guess they think we're startin' them off young now:dunno::smh::hmm:

The racial profiling of customers (based on supposed experience and/or "crime statistics") is certainly well-documented. Don't know how that relates to shopping for dresses.

I just wanted to make that point cuz I thought it fell along the same lines ... is that ok with you or what:dunno:

Even a department store in different parts of the same city will cater to their particular demographic...the local mall around me doesn't carry any "urbanwear" in the Macy's, but the ones on the other side of town do. Also, in recent years, a lot of retail stores, such as Old Navy, pulled their plus size clothing line from the store to focus on another demographic. They now offer the plus size clothing exclusively online.

Back to the whole overtly racist, as someone who has worked retail in the past, you definitely get training on different "types" of customers to monitor: those with bags from other stores, empty baby strollers, customers who are wearing clothing that is not in season (i.e., a big ass coat in the middle of August), and customers who are bringing lots of attention to themselves (i.e., loud customers, those that INSIST on calling a manager, etc.). Blacks tend to be in the latter category (lol), but you'd be surprised at the mothers and "family women" who do some serious stealing....

That's not racism. That's called marketing.

the sales woman is an asshat and shes the racist one

segmentation due to clientle is done all over the place

grocery stores, retail stores, restaurants

this is not a new concept...it business...but the sales woman understanding of this concept isnt very good:Smh:
