According to Trevor Sheridan of Apple'N'Apps, Apple is looking to release an "iCloud iPhone" this year, alongside the launch of the iPhone 5.

The iCloud device will use the same parts as the iPhone 4, but with less memory and storage (to save money), and could cost $0 with contract.

Integrated directly into the cloud, the iCloud iPhone will help Apple keeps its 40%+ margins whilst releasing a device that can compete on a price level with low-end Android phones.

Says Sheridan:
The iPhone 5 will be a quality upgrade, but the star of the show will be the cheaper iCloud iPhone alternative. Apple wants to offer a lower priced iPhone while still maintaining their industry leading profit margins.

According to our sources, Apple is going to do this by using less on board Flash memory which are also falling in price. When looking at the iSuppli cost breakdown of the parts of the iPhone 4, the storage accounts for 15% of the cost to build the device, and that's true for the 3GS as well. Reducing 15% of the cost across millions of units is a substantial savings. The iCloud model will be for users who will want to use the iCloud heavily for storage, and keep a lot less on the iPhone itself. This will also help Apple make iCloud a feature by itself and reason to use the entire Apple ecosystem.

How do we know we are very close to a new iPhone launch. The rumors increase drastically.

Interesting.

How would an iCloud iPhone work in this environment where the wireless companies are clamping down on the data plans. :smh:

I always jump on wifi hotspots, they are everywhere these days. Although I have the unlim data plan, it's pretty much overkill for me. I suspect this may not be good for the small percentage of people who are data hogs, but there surely is a market for it.

Most people do not understand what 2gigs of bandwidth or even how much it is.. During my days in the wireless industry, I had customers going over data all the time, and the only thing I could recommend to them is to store music on their phone instead of streaming off of pandora etc. Needless to say, I'm not a fan of all this "In the cloud" bulshit.

Same here with the unlimited data plan, but these companies are getting stingy/greedy and they are just choking the life out of innovation. A cloud phone is a wonderful idea, but the wireless companies will fuck it all up. :smh:

I'm not a fan of the cloud when it cones to my personal music collection, however, all of my mail, calendars, contacts are in the cloud courtesy of Google.

this. i have no need to keep stuff in a cloud, most of all music, i prefer keeping stuff on my 32gb memory card, more than enough space for HD movies, Pics, Docs, Music. Besides, if you are on the train, how can you access your stuff on the cloud anyway? I have a dropbox account, but thats only for sharing stuff with other people.

Cloud computing is not new. Everyone using technology is probably using the cloud and don't even know it. //hint gmail, hotmail, yahoo etc//

Cloud is just a marketing term. I hate when mofos say "its on the cloud". I always look at them like :hmm:, and then say "so you mean your shit is sitting on a server somewhere that you access yourself".

I couldn't have a phone without any storage. What if I take a flight or get on the subway. I need to be able to access content locally.
