How hard is the exam? Would you reccommend the PMP courses or are local college CEU PMP classes good enough to prep?

Are PMs being phased out in companies?

I'm taking an elective class in IT project management and was curious about the field...

I took the PMP class. I'm not sure about other industries, but I'm in tel-com and PMP's are in high demand. Almost everyone I deal with on projects are project managers. It's just a bunch of project managers going around and around:lol:

I'd suggest taking a prep class, one that uses the Rita Mulcahy material. Rita sits on the board and her material is well respected. Takiing the class will also satisfy the class instruction requirement

I work across several industries as a pmp and demand appears high. Take a class, get Rita's book and consider joining your local pmi chapter. The chapter meetings allow you to meet with other pmps as well as people studying for the exam.

Good Luck

you need years of justified experience to get the pmp, however you can get a certified associates in project management with less experience...

you'd be better off starting with project+ from comptia since you're IT focused....

that's true. and once you get the exp to justify it. I would suggest a boot camp.

Dude,
I been trying to study for that test for years..Ive been in PM for over 15 years and it's a skill set that is useful in all industries...I am starting the test preparation again next week. I enrolled in the Villanova University session through the job for about $1000 but there as tons a good reference books out there. PM normally make $75K+ with good experience and it goes up there..Ive seen PM making 150K easy...

Good point. When study for one of the PM exams making sure you pick an industry where PM's are in demand. IT and other tech fields are areas in need. They have courses for different industries. You might want to go for an associate first because there are experience requirements needed to get a PMP certification.
