I'm cool with a lot of them too. They are nice people and all but they definitely have some deep racial issues going on specifically with black people. I was in the process of booking all these freakin temple tours even though in my heart I kinda wanted to chill with my friend and his family taking in the authentic culture. We plan to do Pune and Goa but after that I just want to chill and do maybe a local festival. I can already cook some indian dishes and make chai. I swear his family has adopted me. I was mostly alone in Philly after my friend for 15 years shitted on my over a chick. All I can say is these dudes have been true friends including coming to the hospital when I had my heart attack back in march.

Anyway in terms of places to visit, this to some extent this depends on your interests and experience of travelling and Asia in particular. The plains of northern India are dry and dusty, punctuated with extraordinary cities built by Mogul emperors and Rajput princes; they are crowded, vibrant places that can overwhelm....some of those castles have been turned into 5 star hotels...

If you are a timid traveller I would opt for an escorted tour that does not try to cover too much ground. Joining a large group will mean travelling on main roads in a coach, staying in modern business hotels or large forts with Western-style facilities, and visiting only the main sights in a city and the odd crafts emporium. BUT.....Private journeys with a car and driver let you set the pace. Try to weave in visits to smaller towns, many of which have equally fine temples and palaces but without the babel of tour groups....FUCK MAN....This reminds me of taking a trip to the SWAHILI COAST...in East Africa.

Anyway,if you happen to start with North then The Golden Triangle(The cities of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur) these are known as the Golden Triangle because of their cultural splendour. That said, Delhi can be a pleasant place to start a visit if your hotel is in New Delhi(if ur hosts are based in Delhi).

Now from there you can hit Agra, Jaipur and Jodhpur...if you fancy to see dead bodies and narrow streets and of course the might ganges then this is the place for you

Someone mentioned Bundi and thats the coolest place you will be since they have no big hotels so you can stay with families...

And to finish off your trip you can hit Kerala downsouth...words cant do justice about that place...

Goa is for hippies and spoilt rich CACS who wanna find themselves.

Ohhh when it comes to accomodation...there are three main types of quality hotel in India: heritage properties (former Raj guesthouses, royal palaces and forts), glitzy modern hotels often set in beautiful gardens, and boutique guesthouses and homestays, which are often family-run.
