How is the crime/violence in the cities/towns outside of Kingston?
Any big problems? do's or don'ts? (i.e. if you value ur life you can't come to my part of town wearing all red...south l.a.)

if your a tourist.....just stay on the tourist side of town...everything you need is on the North coast anyway(montego bay negril run a way bay) thats where all the good beaches are yada yada yada...there are no beaches or attractions in kingston only some good clubs(quad, asylum) and the weekly dances(uptown mondays and so forth) there is bob marley`s tuff gong studio and little things but nothin to run to kingston for. The north coast also has clubs like jungle in negril so i wouldnt take that trip for a damn club(its like a 4-5 hr ride).I mean no one is really going to bother you in kingston, probably some begging money and things of that sort, but to be safe if i were you i wouldnt really venture out of New Kingston after dark,Kingston as a whole is very small and most of it is garison .What are you going for? be specific

Rule number 1 when in Jamaica, NEVER flash money or wealth around in public, heck, not even in front of family of friends, because people talk and word gets around. Split you money up, never take out bungles of money at a time, just take out of you pocket what you need to spend at a time. The more broke you give the impression to be the better, that way people leave you alone and you don't become a planned target. Hang around with trusted friends and family who are streetwise and won't drag you into dangerous areas and company. Stick areas where it is known top be safe and last but not least if you hear gunshots anywhere immedietly get flat on the ground, cause stray bullets can fuck you up. Enjoy your stay.

i'll be there for a loooong extended period..to volunteer...over 1 year....but not in the kingston area....i think i'm a smart traveler and i have dreds so maybe ill fit in a bit, hehe...just wont be hanging around the whitey's for sure...lol...they are a fuckin' target...well im trying to size up the danger of it all but i dont know....lol..sounds like it cant be any worse than compton/watts area of los angeles, but hell, i've lived in l.a. all my life and never stopped in watts/compton...lol...but ive been robbed b4 by a dumb ass crip near my house...lol...he saw my ipod earphones and tried to take it...luckily my ipod was stashed in my pants and i told him the earphones went to a radio on my watch....haha...dumb fuck...only got away with like 3 dollars...i dont think they ever realize that the folks they rob in the community are usually just as broke as they are....but yeah...wont be takin my ipod shit to jamaica or any name brand clothing...i'm gonna buy a mp3 portable cd player...

oh...are there any easy ways to travel to other islands in carribbean anyone know? i wish i could visit cuba after being so close but i'm sure that won't be happening :(

Like poster no.2 said, if you don't know no-one from yard stick to the tourist parts like mo bay, negril, trelawny etc and try and check out dunns river (everybody who comes to ja should check it out).

On the whole jamaicas a friendly place with laid back people, if you yourself are cool then there should be no problem and everything should be irie.

One note of caution. If your landing at kingston airport your gonna come out and see real slums (the gutter) straight away. This is not a representation of the whola yard. I still don't know why the damn gov built our biggest airport next to the slums :smh:

PEACE!!!

My advice would be to have numerous t shirts made announcing your a fassy or batty rider, and a hat to match....tie the front of the shirt into a knot and make sure it ends right above your belly button. because jamaica is hot make sure you only wear flip flops.
If approached by any native jamaicans use the native dialect greeting phrase "mi ah battiman"....If your going to the heart of kingston dont forget to wear tight fitting shorts made of very light material.

Enjoy your trip bruh.

Just act normal overall and do not let off a pussy vibe and you should be alright. I never really stayed in the big cities when I was down there , but everywhere I have gone I have played it cool and got good results.

Try to befriend some real rastamen who you can smoke weed and chill with. Everybody respects rastamen down there and if you can have one guiding you along , you will not have to worry about much (unless you are a big pussy).

Last year i stayed on a resort in Trelwany and the first day down I met this Rastaman outside the resort.I made him smoke me on some real weed in the day then bring me into core the city to a strip club that same night. This dude was telling everybody I was his family, so I got maximum respect.

Forcesteeler - You are a pussy
Smiff n Wessun- Why u wanna see this nigga die?lol

Jamaica for newbies

Duck means gunshot not food.

Taxis carry 9 people, mini buses 20.

We drive on the left (most of the time).

The best jerk pork is sold by a dread on the corner of the by pass and old harbour Road.

The best Fried fish Little Ochie

Don’t bother to go to Hellshire

Go to Shades ‘nightclub’ and take the wife along she’ll love it

Do the tourist bit Dunns River, The Blue Lagoon, Rose Hall great house, Glass bottom boats, Jet ski (Always offer 25 % less than they ask).

Don’t drink the Local white rum (Wray and nephew) more than 20 meters from your room. The US and UK stuff is watered down so be careful.

Don’t bother with Kingston or Mobay. Too many white people in MoBay and if you live in the US your probably tired of them already

Safety Tips

Be polite and smile. Smiles go a long way!!

However, learn to give a hard look if some one takes the piss. (Jamaicans understand and respect a strong man)

Prepare for men to call to your woman even if she’s a dog. Take no offence, we like all sorts.

Ditch the bling. Leave it at home. We have real poverty in Ja. And bling is like a ATM to us.

Travel with credit/debit cards and don’t flash your cash.

If a little boy ask for money to wash/watch your rental. Ask you self why not. It’s cheaper than the whole car disappearing because you’re a asshole.

PS. Ask for Brenda at Shades and tell her I SOON COME

Most of all have a great time and don’t listen to the haters. Every country has crime why shouldn’t we?

Mob beats cross-dresser
Melee in Falmouth; wig, form-fitting blouse ripped off
HORACE HINES, Observer staff reporter
Saturday, April 28, 2007

Scenes from the beating of a cross-dresser in Falmouth yesterday morning.

FALMOUTH, Trelawny - A cross-dreser was set upon and severely beaten by a mob in Falmouth's Water Square yesterday morning.

20070428T020000-0500_122324_OBS_-1.jpg

Police who were called to the scene had to fire warning shots to disperse the stone-throwing, stick-wielding mob, which succeeded in tearing off the man's black-and-white form-fitting blouse and jet black wig.

According to eyewitnesses, the man was spotted at approximately 8:30 am in the town centre apparently waiting for transportation. He was wearing heavy make-up, high-heeled shoes, a long pair of shiny earrings, a black leather jacket over a snug black-and-white blouse, a tight-fitting pair of jeans, a black wig, a pair of sunglasses and a handbag slung over his broad shoulders.

It was not clear yesterday how the alarm was first raised. However, the Observer was told that the assault began as soon as someone in the busy square shouted that the person was actually a man wearing female attire.

The news of the man's presence in the community spread rapidly and in a matter of minutes scores of angry residents converged on the scene and began to rain blows all over the cross-dresser's body with sticks, stones and whatever weapon they could find.
"Where is the police station at?" the frightened man screamed.

During the melee, the wig the man was wearing fell off and wads of newspaper stuffed in a brasserie to lift the man's chest dislodged, while a cosmetic kit containing lipsticks of varying colours was thrown from a bag he was carrying, much to the amusement of the large crowd who stood watching.

"B***y boy fe dead," persons among the mob shouted.
The sentiments were echoed by the rest of the riled-up crowd.

"Falmouth no pet no b***y boy. We no want none a them bout here," one woman yelled.
After the mob dispersed, the victim was whisked off in a police service vehicle, much to the disapproval of the crowd who rushed upon the vehicle demanding the man's release.
"If you ever did see him. Him dress hotter than you and me," one young girl was overheard telling her friend.
"Nu worry man, we gi him a proper [beating]," one man said proudly.

The man was admitted to hospital. However, a police spokesman said last night that a group of people, who wanted to beat the man on his release, were waiting outside the hospital, which, he said, could delay his release from the health facility.

Yesterday's beating was the second such in a month in western Jamaica. In the previous incident, several men alleged to be homosexuals were chased, beaten and stabbed, resulting in one of them being hospitalised, during the Supreme Ventures carnival on Gloucester Avenue, Montego Bay. The men were said to have gone onto the stage and gyrated on each other, angering the patrons.

Lol, falmouth, Trelawni was where i was chillin my first night in Jamaica last year, with this this rasta. We were there till around 4am. Nice place....for straight ppl

Man alot of the Jamaicans that i know won't go back. That's a bad look for that country. You know it's bad when Jamaicans tell you that Jamaica was better off under British Rule.

Most people i know think the US was better under British rule. Do i care what they think NO.

Go see for yourself. The way some of you on this board front surely you are not afraid a little island native. LOL.

The funny thing is most of the real hard core crime is now done by the deportees from....You guessed it the US.

I was there December, I'll be back in August and i'm getting married there next year. So you know my vote.

You must be young... do you really think that Winward Road, Mountain View Road and its environs were slums when the Airport was built? :smh:

Rule of thumb for tourists; stay in the "tourist" areas. You are much safer there. Once you stray, anything can happen.

Remember: this is an election year. Once it is called and the date is known, all hell is going to pop loose down here.

I didn't say they were always slums but they've never been totally trouble free (at least not since i've been alive). Whatever Winward was like before is irrelevent now, the gov still keeps pumping money in the airport without fixing the surrounding area, WTF??
