Anthony Mackie does a 180

Shortly after the Oscars ended Sunday, Samuel L. Jackson sent an e-mail to a Times reporter wondering why no black men had been chosen to present awards on the film world's biggest stage.

"It's obvious there's not ONE Black male actor in Hollywood that's able to read a teleprompter, or that's 'hip enuf,' for the new academy demographic!" Jackson wrote. "In the Hollywood I saw tonite, I don't exist nor does Denzel, Eddie, Will, Jamie, or even a young comer like Anthony Mackie!"

Jackson may be on to something, at least when it comes to the young comers.

There is still a sizable number of black actors in Hollywood with box-office clout and meaty roles, a point that will be underscored when the NAACP hands out its annual Image Awards in Los Angeles Friday night. Will Smith is the biggest movie star in the world, a title he's held now for several years, and Denzel Washington remains at the peak of his box-office powers.

But most of the prominent male black stars sit on the other side of 40. The best known of the next generation -- say, Derek Luke (36), Chiwetel Eijofor (33), Idris Elba (39) and Mackie (31) -- are not only less influential, they're not nearly as popular in their 30s as the previous crop was at their age. (Washington, for instance, had already won an Oscar and made "Glory," "Malcolm X" and "Philadelphia" before he hit the big 4-0.)

That's not because any of these actors aren't capable of pulling off a "Malcolm X" or a "Philadelphia," of course. It's because they're not given the chance. Mackie has one of the more substantive studio roles for a younger black actor in a while as Matt Damon's guardian angel in this weekend's "The Adjustment Bureau." But it's hardly the role of a lifetime.

"It's frustrating that the movies I want to make I haven't been able to make," Mackie told 24 Frames. "Orlando Bloom was given 15 opportunities after 'Lord of the Rings.' Black men are given no opportunities."

Race in Hollywood is a subject close to Mackie's heart. He's studiously avoided the "Who's Your Caddys" and "Big Momma's Houses" of the film world, going instead to indies such as "The Hurt Locker" and, almost as frequently, to the stage.

"In the early 1990's, every black actor you know now was starting out and making movies. They were making more movies under Daddy Bush than we are under Obama, which is ridiculous," Mackie said.

The scarcity of black roles in 2011 is partly a function of fewer movies being made, and certainly fewer serious-minded movies at the studios. When Washington and Smith were coming up, there were routinely chances to make those types of films. (Smith made "Six Degrees of Separation" with MGM when he was 24 and in the middle of shooting a network sitcom.) Now you need to go indie or wait for lightning to strike at a studio.

The growth of the black-comedy niche may also have, paradoxically, resulted in fewer opportunities, as black actors get cordoned off in the land of "Soul Plane."

But while some studio executives will privately say they're simple reacting to the marketplace realities when it comes to casting younger black actors in lead roles of mainstream films, the actors don't buy it. "They say there's not an audience for black stars, but that's because you're not feeding [audiences] them," Mackie said.

Actors can take a long time to develop their talents and establish a relationship with an audience. The dearth of young black actors may be obscured in 2011, with Washington and Smith -- not to mention Don Cheadle, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker and others -- still making movies. But one wonders what type of entertainment world we'll be occupying when these stars are in their 50s and 60s and Hollywood has cultivated almost no one to take their place.

Good read.

Black people need their own hollywood. The Indians got Bollywood. We need our own shit.

We did it big back in the 70s with the blaxploitation films. These black films saved hollywood. Some cats are too young to know about that... but we did and now they keep that shit hidden.

Ask your parents if they are in their 50s or 60s if you don't know.

FUCK THE WHITE/JEW controlled hollywood. Fuck em.

We need to boycott them punk ass bitches

Niggaz need to stop worrying about white hollywood.Make your own shit already and stop with tha egos and CAC ass kissing. :smh: :smh:

the reality is blacks have more money power than ever before yet we're still following the same paradigms..nothing can get done when someone else is controlling the distribution.

you can make the product all you want...if someone else controls where it goes and how much of it gets there your still under thumb. Thats hat they mean when they say blacks don't sell..thats the distributor saying that and the studio exec echoing it..

When blacks control distribution for their films then you'll see a true renaissance and much more different and varied stories being told..until then we'll get the same old same old..

Integration was one of the worst thing to happen to black folk in Hollywood and in business. That's why "others" are running our shit.

There are a mint of direct to dvd black films out there, before blockbuster closed, it seemed like thats damn near what was left on the wall. Dudes like 50 Cent is going that exact route a quick search of IMDB and you'll see that he's produced 7 films since 2009 that you've probably never heard of, and most likely never will. But alot of them shits are on Netflix.

The movie theaters were virtually shit down until they came out with Shaft, Superfly, Coffy, The Legend of ****** Charlie (Still don't know how we bought into that one)The Education of Sonny Carson, Uptown Saturday Night, Buck and the Preacher and on and on.

Those movies brought blacks back to the theater. The neighborhood theater was the place to go on the weekend. You could go in and stay all day watching the double and triple showing w a cartoon all day long. (LOL)

So yes, we saved Hollywood!

For one thing black people only tend to support certain kind of movies. You can forget a black version of lord of the rings with some African folklore and some great special effects.........we won't go see it. No black sci-fi. I don't really see black horror. Rarely a good thriller. Black super heroes?

All we get is some dramas that should go straight to lifetime or some fucking comedies. :smh: :smh:

Is Hollywood racist? Of course, but we also limit ourselves by what we are willing to support.

There aren't any good Black actresses out there.

J-Hud is trying. Viola Davis is also good.

Black folk can risk their career by broadening their range.

Ask Cuba.

been saying this for years, white ppl wont watch black ppl unless its a fucked up situation, i.e. Precious or The Blind Side, but black folks will watch anything on average, i c/s other posters we need a Blackwood or some clever name thats our own, we are a billion dollar power, if we boycott Hollywood they would fail

^^^^^^^ I never thought Mackie was a great actor but he makes great points about business period. My Mother keeps telling me to look at the bigger picture and lets not focus on getting rich right now.

I AGREE, THE "ELITE" BLACKS NEED TO STEP UP AND START SUPPORTING THEIR OWN MORE....THAT MEANS OPRAH, THE JOHNSONS, ETC. THEY NEED TO START INVESTING IN DISTRIBUTION AND BACKING REAL MOVIES NOT TYLER PERRY GARBAGE AND EXTREMELY DEGRADING AND OFFENSIVE MOVIES LIKE PRECIOUS AND FOR COLORED GIRLS.

BUT AT THE SAME TOKEN WE LIVE IN A "VIRAL" SOCIETY AND HAVE TECHNOLOGY AT OUR FINGERTIPS WE COULD BE MAKING INDIE FILMS FOR VERY LOW COST...ALA BLACK DYNAMITE, WHICH WAS SHOT INDIE TAKEN TO THE FILM FESTIVAL AND BLEW UP.

hell, its even worse for black actresses,
yet ive never heard a sista in the industry publically speak out about it.:hmm:

THEY CANT SPEAK OUT THEIR ROLES ARE EVEN MORE SCARCE THAN THE MEN, AND FOR MOST PART THEY ARE NOT USED FOR ANYTHING BUT EYECANDY...THE MOST POPULAR "BLACK" ACTRESS WON AN OSCAR FOR DOING A HARDCORE PORN SCENE, AND IS HAS NOT BEEN IN A MOVIE SINCE X-MEN WHERE SHE HASNT SHOWED HER TITS OR BEEN SMUTTED OUT :smh:

Like I said, there aren't any good black actresses out there.

REALLY??? I THINK SANAA LATHAN, NIA LONG, THANDIE NEWTON, AND ANGELA BASSETT ARE ALL GREAT ACTRESSES...

This.

It's funny this topic has been on my mind for the past month. I had a commercial audition yesterday and I got into a discussion with a white actor. He asked me if I was SAG.For those of you who don't know, SAG is the Screen Actors Guild, a union for actors. Most shows and major feature films are SAG productions and you have to be either a full fledged SAG member or at least SAG-Eligible to even get seen by a Casting Director for any one of these productions. There are a couple of ways to go about getting into the Union: 1. Obtain 3 SAG vouchers by performing background/extra work (only blonde head white chicks are able to get it this way really, a complete waste of time) 2. Hopefully book a SAG commercial which you will then become Taft-Hartlyed into the union ( This is pure luck and will require years of auditioning , callbacks and hopefully booking) 3. SAG has introduced the New Media contract, which allows any prodcution to produce a web series under this contract thus allowing any actors who are not SAG, to become SAG (this is what I did for myself and 5 other non-union actors for my webseries "Dog's are a Woman's Best Friend). After obtaining the Sag Eligible status, you can work both non-union and Union (SAG) until you become a must join. I.E. I'm sag eligible, I book a guest starring role on House. After booking that role I become a must join which means I have 30 days to join SAG or if I book another SAG show or production, I can not participate until I join by paying the $2600.00 dues.

Most white actors have this notion that you do not want to join SAG right away because it limits your opportunities to do other non-union work, don't join until you have to is their motto.

Back to my story, I'm discussing being SAG eligible to the white actor and I told him that I'm going to join the union because all the roles that are available for blacks are mainly Union stuff (SouthLAnd, Law and Order, House, etc)and the roles that are non union character specific (I'm usually cast as a thug, goon, hard ass, etc) are few and far in between. He could not wrap that logic around his head. I broke it down further. I told him on any given day there are breakdowns for guys his type about 50- 100 roles. For guys my type, maybe 2 ore 5 at that most. This is all non-union, non paying stuff. I went on to explain that the pool of black roles is very limited. I'm audition with guys like Ricky Harris, Christopher Duncan, Brian Hooks, etc. Cats who have been in the game for years and I'm always seeing the same dudes at almost every audition.

Black Hollywood is very small. Most producers, directors, etc are too afraid to front anything as they know they will probably not see a ROI. It boggles my mind how guys like Charles Dutton can put out very good material and at times get a major studio backing, but are too afraid to just say fuck it and do it all on their own.

By their standards he risked his career, but if you create your own empire, you create the standards. Ultimately, this is more of a reason for a black hollywood to be created

C/S 100%....Another thing I'm noticing to is, you dont see many attractive black women in movies like that anymore. Im guessing because the white women behind the scenes were always intimidated by them, now those feelings are starting to manifest.:smh:

We did it big back in the 70s with the blaxploitation films. These black films saved hollywood.

most of those blaxploitation flicks were financially backed, written, produced and directed by white folks. very few were headed by black hollywood pros. but i get your point. but it ain't gonna happen. how many brothers u see lining up to invest their loot into a project that more often than not LOSES money?

Shouldnt this be a call to tyler perry to stop producing/making this bullshit movies and really expand his brand puttng his money behind some heavy weight actors/actresses and movie scripts? Will smith got his own production company... These niggas really need to get it poppin on a major level.
