Apple attempts to patent kill switch that roots out unauthorized users, detects jailbreaks

Just about every mobile operating system manufacturer can remotely delete apps from the smartphones they help provide, but if a recent patent application is any indication, Apple's looking to lock down the whole enchilada on future devices. The basic concept is as simple as the diagram above -- certain activities trigger the phone to think it's in the wrong hands -- but the particular activities and particular remedies Apple suggests extend to audiovisual spying (to detect if a user has a different face or voice than the owner), and complete remote shutdown. While the patent mostly sounds targeted at opt-in security software and would simply send you an alert or perform a remote wipe if your phone were stolen or hacked, jailbreaking and unlocking are also explicitly mentioned as the marks of an unauthorized user, and one line mentions that cellular carriers could shut down or cripple a device when such a user is detected. Sounds great for securing phones at retail, sure, but personally we'd rather devices don't determine our authority by monitoring our heartbeat (seriously, that's an option) and we're plenty happy with the existing Find My iPhone app.

I think AgentCreed or Heist predicted this would happen & it looks like it's on the verge of happening sooner rather than later :smh:

Current & future iPhone/iTouch/iPad users have to hope that's the case. It would be a damn shame to have their product crippled just because they want to get extra functionality out of it. I wish the FCC stepped in on AT&T doing that shit with their Android devices by removing the rights to install non-Market apps. Customers should be able to have the ability to tweak their devices at their own expense instead of having that choice taken away from them.

i truly hope that if apples does this the sales for their product goes way down, cause i only got a iphone for its jailbreak option and i know i cant be alone, i maybe not be the majority but its gotta be a high percentage like me, i cant knock apple for doing this but i wanna see the consumers respond by not buyin their shit anymore.

Agreed. It's simple really... the consumer who bought the product has the right to modify it as they see fit.

I understand Apple's business case for forcing consumers to go through the appstore but I don't really see how the legal argument against jailbreaking could have any merit.

It probably won't happen bruh.

Agreed. But wasn't it the feds who gave this exemption to jailbreaking. My guess is Jobs is probably either doing whats known as "puffing" trying to frighten people out of doing this on their own or he's ready to face a federal challenge because this is clearly would be a violation of federal law. He could get a patent but the first time it's used, its on.

Exactly. If they do this, I'm definitely not upgrading and I'm dropping their asses. I love their computers, but I'm really on the fence about the phone. The whole making excuses for shit rubbed me the wrong way plus the fact that Androids are getting more and more advanced makes one think twice about dealing with some of Job's fuckery.

I'm like you when it came to the iPhone...I liked the fact that I had a very sleek phone with tons of capabilities that could be accessed through jailbreaking. If that is taken away, then why stay?

You think the government is going to protect you? Laughing out loud. You are undermining the hard work of countless Apple engineers/developers. Fuck you pay me.

I'm so glad I'm done with this iphone bullshit (copped the EVO when it came out). Just make a better phone, with better functionality, and people won't invent things to make your phone complete. It's as simple as that.
