Analysts claim gamers will go Nintendo crazy in 2008, with 23 million Wii consoles sold. On the other hand, Grand Theft auto will burn through wallets with a predicted 13 million sold as the number one selling game of the year.
When the dust settles from 2008 and we tally the results in January 2009, one console above all others will rule the roost: the Wii. Ironically, the number one game won't be on a Nintendo system, as mega-hyped Grand Theft Auto IV will crush the market with 13 million copies sold for the year.
That is, if you believe the analysts. Daniel Ernst of Hudson Square Research put pencil to paper this week and, when he was done, his numbers revealed that by March 2009 Microsoft will have sold 11.2 million Xbox 360s worldwide; Sony will have peddled 12.5 million PS3s; and Nintendo will have sold more than both companies combined with 23 million waggle wonder consoles in the arms of gamers across the globe.
"Microsoft got the jump on the industry with a one-year headstart, but nine months after its the launch, the Wii overtook the Xbox 360 on a global basis. While the PS3 has struggled out of the gate, we note that since last fall the console has been outselling the Xbox 360 in Europe, and in the first two months of this year has even outsold the Xbox 360 on its home turf in the U.S.," Ernst said.
And get this: Nintendo's insane sales will come in spite of the fact that analysts like Mike Hickey of Janco Partners recently predicted GTA IV would sell nearly six million in its first week and 13 million copies on the year.
According to Ernst, the top 2008 Wii titles will be Wii Fit (10 million), Super Smash Brothers Brawl (9 million) and Guitar Hero IV (7 million -- all systems). Apparently, Ernst is no fan of Mario Kart Wii.
