Online grocery delivery expanding

Amazon says millions of customers in more than 5,000 U.S. cities and towns already use its grocery delivery services, which include orders from Whole Foods Market, Amazon Fresh online and partner grocers such as Weis Markets, Winn-Dixie and Metropolitan Market.

The company reported major growth in 2025 after adding perishable foods to its Same-Day Delivery service, allowing customers to order produce, dairy, meat, baked goods and frozen foods alongside household goods and electronics.

Sales of perishables through that same-day program have increased 40-fold since early 2025, the company says, and fresh groceries now make up nine of the 10 most-ordered items in markets where the service is available.

Whole Foods expansion planned

Amazon says Whole Foods Market — which it acquired in 2017 — has seen sales climb more than 40% and now operates more than 550 stores nationwide.

The company plans to open more than 100 additional Whole Foods locations in the coming years.

Amazon is also growing a smaller-format concept called Whole Foods Market Daily Shop, focused on grab-and-go meals, coffee and everyday staples. Five Daily Shop locations currently operate on the East Coast, with five more expected by the end of 2026.

Amazon Go, Fresh stores shutting down

Amazon acknowledged that its Amazon-branded grocery stores had not yet developed a business model suited for large-scale expansion and, as a result, the company says it will close Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores, converting some locations into Whole Foods Market stores instead.

Amazon says it is working to place affected employees in other roles within the company.

The retailer also said Amazon Go helped develop its “Just Walk Out” checkout-free technology, now used at hundreds of third-party locations worldwide, including hospitals and sports arenas.
