* merged a music class with an almost famous. I remember the boy vs girl tracks were really popular back in day and arent really recorded any more. This was one of the biggest ones. They did do LeShaun dirty and glad she got paid...and she sounded real good on this record.

AllHipHop.com caught up with LeShaun about LL, photography, female rappers, and if there is any such thing as life after hip-hop.

AllHipHop.com: Being part of Flavor Unit seemed like it had to be so fun, jumping on and off of each other’s records. Take us back to some of the early days in your career.

LeShaun: Wow. It was fun. But, at the same time it was stressful, because there weren’t very many females, doing what we were doing. There were some that were out, but they weren’t writing their own shit. So it was really nerve wracking to say the least, because those of us that were really talented and writing our own stuff, we weren’t depending on a ghost writer. But, it was kinda like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ like this person is doing this that and the other she did not even write that, you know, it would piss me off, you know. Because we knew we were writing our own stuff and we had the talent, but it was just so hard for us to really get our foot in the door and get the recognition that we deserved you know as female artists that were doing our own thing.

AllHipHop.com: Why do you think things are so challenging for female artists in hip-hop?

LeShaun: I don’t know it’s almost as if guys don’t wanna hear girls rapping, I mean, not only just guys, I guess. People just don’t want to hear females rapping. I’m not sure. I love it (to hear female rappers), of course, obviously I’m a little bit biased, but, you know, I have always loved it. I’ve always loved to see women get involved in something that is male dominated and then do their thing. I am the type of girl that loves to watch a movie and then there is a bad a** chick in the movie and, I’m like ‘Yeah!’ I have always been that type of girl.

It’s weird now because it’s still that same struggle that I had when I was younger. Rap is still very male dominated, and you have one or two females that are doing something, and it’s like there is not enough room, but there is enough room for a hundred male rappers to all be doing well at one time. And that kinda sucks. I don’t know I don’t know I don’t know what it is about the culture. But you definitely you got a lot of females that are out there, some that have not even been discovered yet–that are dope as hell, that write their own stuff and can can spit like like the guys you know just right off the top and it’s just harder for them. You know, it’s just weird.

AllHipHop.com: Can you talk about “Doin It,” and why it was important to you to speak up for yourself and and take legal action.

LeShaun: Ummm well… Let me see…First of all, I need to say there was a lot of stuff going on as far as me not being visible in the video. Because LL was the person that I was doing the song with, and he was the talent, he was the one that they sort of put in the forefront (as making the decision to exclude me from the video), but it wasn’t LL It was the people behind him saying, ‘you know we can’t do this; she is pregnant.’ The media, they don’t care about the middle man, or anybody behind the scenes they want to make it about the talent, the artist and the person that people know that they are familiar with which was LL. And so… we had our issues.

I was really upset about the situation because I was pregnant, but I still felt like I wanted people to know who I was, you know? Someone else was going to get the recognition for the hard work that I did, and that’s what really upset me. I really wanted to make a statement that I thought it was unfair for me to not be able to do my thing. It was not fair for me to just you know sit back and say here’s my voice and nobody knows who the hell I am. This was one of the biggest songs of you know of his career. It was huge, “Doing It” went triple platinum and that could have done a lot more for me career wise.

And still to this day, I feel like had I been in the video, I think it would have probably helped my music career move along, but then again I had to think that everything happens for a reason. I was pregnant. When I look at pictures of myself when I was pregnant, I ask myself if I really want that to be looping over and over and over again 20 years later with my pregnant face when they were shooting the video, I had my daughter, but I still had that pregnant look. You get that pudgy face your nose is wide and you just don’t really kinda look like yourself, I don’t know if you have any kids or if you’ve ever had any children and went through that but your face looks different. You know, And so I don’t know, I’m kinda like did I really want that to be the face that people remember 20 years down the line, I don’t know.

AllHipHop: Have you left rap behind and, if so, what is that like?

LeShaun: No I haven’t, I still write pretty much every day. I still write songs, I write poetry. I am actually about to finish up my book of poetry. So some of them are funny, some of them are cutthroat, they come from life experiences.

Some of them are street, I mean I’m still Brooklyn (laughter). Some people that have run in my circle are gonna say, ‘holy sh*t she talking about me.’ I am planning to tie in my photography with the book. I am definitely not giving up on hip hop. I would love to get my ass back out there on stage and do a show or two.

I remember that whole I'm Doin' It shit......I always thought it was that bad ass chic with the babyhair in the video saying that part. Then I remember hearing how she was pregnant. Theyw asn't gonna put her pregnant ass in no video man. Not on no LL record. They teamed up again for that one record. Record was kind of wack but it was cool to see them come together again.

What made you start your career as photographer?

When I was younger, I used to carry around my camera. I always liked to take pictures of everything that I did. D-Nice is the one person that I know that inspired me to do photography. We worked together in the past on music and I hope that we can work together again in the future with photography.

Do you still associate with LL Cool J?

I still talk to LL to this day despite what we went through with the video situation. The press made it seems as if I hated him but it’s nothing but love. His wife Simone and I are good friends. We keep in contact and kick it from time to time. I owed my career to not only LL but Shakim Compere and Chris Lighty (RIP) because he’s the one person that believed in me and put me on “Doin It.”

What do you think about female rappers today?

I barely can answer that question because I haven’t heard any new talent on the radio, but the only female rapper that I know right now is Nicki Minaj. She’s the only rapper with hit songs on the radio and collaborating with other artists. I am cool with MC Lyte and one of the female rappers that are out right now that I love is Eve and Trina.

Which rappers are you feeling today?

Some of the rappers that I am feeling today are Macklemore, J. Cole, Nicki, Jay Z of course because he’s from my hometown, and many more. I am feeling Justin Timberlake and Ciara too even though they’re R&B. I re-did J.Cole’s song “In The Morning.”

What advice would you give to those that want to pursue a career either in photography or music?

The advice that I would give is: keep believing in yourself and keep yourself going despite having people tell you “no.”

What are some of your upcoming projects?

I don’t have anything going on in music, but I have a book coming out soon with poetry. I got my start in writing by reading Chelsea Handler’s book. I was also writing throughout my whole life starting from my poetry and raps.

Would you ever do reality tv?

I’m a big fan of ‘Love & Hip Hop’ & ‘Basketball Wives.’ I would do it for my photography career and I wouldn’t have a problem with it.

Formerly known as Almond Joy, LeShaun burst upon the scene in 1988 along with her DJ Short Cut, on the track Wild Thang as the vocal half of a group called 2 Much. The song is seen by some as a female response to Wild Thing by Tone Loc; reminiscent of Roxanne Shante and The Real Roxanne’s response records to a popular song by UTFO. Instead of attacking Tone Loc, LeShaun takes on the female’s perspective of his song, and in the end makes it her own. However, it is not clear whether LeShaun’s “Wild Thang” is truly a response to Tone Loc’s “Wild Thing”, since the former was originally released one year before the latter.

A remixed and re-recorded version of Wild Thang resurfaced again in 1993 on the Ready or Not single. Around this time LeShaun was signed to Tommy Boy Records and involved in Flavor Unit, whose most recoginable face is that of Queen Latifah , appearing on a track on the posse album “Rollin’ Wit Tha Flava” in that same year.

Over the next few years LeShaun released a few other songs or collaborations, such as Wide Open in 1994 which was produced by D Nice, an influential former member of the crew Boogie Down Productions that was led by KRS-One. Wide Open along with her old hit Wild Thang is most likely what led to her collaborating with other popular artists like Coolio and LL Cool J.

You buggin again playahaitian.

And if getting skeeted in was more important than concentrating on her craft then that shit was on her. Im glad they aint put that preggo bitch in that video. Woulda ruined it for everyone.

The song was hot but ole girl got pregnant at the wrong time...

Oh wow. I didn't know that track was basically initially hers. First time ever hearing that track. No wonder she a lil' salty about not getting in the video. LL made her shit a hit but yea man the timing of that pregnancy.......

Well we all have our own taste but I don't hear nothing wack about this song.

Yea I hate Trackmasters and their production. This era anyway. Their shit with Nas was dope. But this was around the time I started hating that sound they were coming with. Hate that type of production.

The thing is... This song came out damn near 10 years before the LL version...

This was a P-Fine(89.1), Hank Love and DNA(105.9) CLASSIC...

For those who don't know... P-Fine... Hank Love and DNA were old school underground hip hop radio show... and this song got a lot of burn back then...

Unfortunately, when the song started some run on KissFM and WBLS, it was deemed too racy for those shows.

BUT... I most definitely remember Almond Joy/Leshaun...
