Why is it that the countries don't have all of their top players playing? I know you can have the much younger players for Olympic play but where are some of the ppl I would expect to see...for example:

No Kaka or Robinho for Brazil. No Drogba from Ivory Coast. No Klose for Germany, no Obefemi Martins for Nigeria. And so on

I see Ronaldinho and Messi made it for their countries but where are the rest of these top players? Nigeria is a good team but if this was the World Cup would anyone think they could make to the finals where all these ppl would be there for their country?

Each team is only allowed one player over 23 years old in the team.
I think this rule was introduced because FIFA the body the governs world football does not want any competition to compete with the World Cup.

It's not only one, it's 3. The U.S. had McBride, Parkhurst, and Guzan. the netherlands had Makaay and siberhome or something...You can have three but some teams use less if they choose.

Good look guys, did not know that rule. Was watching a few matches and sayin to myself "where the fuck is X or Y" Well guess this says a lot about Nigeria's under 21 players then.

This makes no sense. The world cup is an entity within itself. :dunno: FIFA just selfish.

Not to mention some of the football clubs do not want their players to go to the olympics. Barcelona could have very well have asked Lionel Messi to stay and help the club.

I can see that but my feeling is that the footballers put the international play of their countries higher than their club. You don't see the clubs saying that players should stay home and play while qualifying for World Cup.

This event is now on about the same level as olympic baseball for me. I would like to see the best players from each country playing (pro and juniors). Though this is in the middle of the baseball season, football leagues haven't started just yet so it is possible for them to participate.

Actually they did. He refused and turned up for the national team. Ronaldino too.

Correction: That's not what happened.
Barcelona won their case to keep the player with the club. They were just trying to assert the rights of clubs to keep their players for tournament which are not on the official FIFA calendar.
Although they did win the case, they chose not to force the player to come back because he had his heart set on representing his country.

In Ronaldinho's case, he was sold from Barcelona to Milan just before the Olympics, and part of his negotiation with Milan was taht he be allowed to go to the Olympics after he officially signed for the club.
