And that's that.
There are any number of things you can call Alicia Keys: pop star, Grammy-winner, pretty as a princess. There's one label, however, that Ms. Keys is having none of: don't call her a homewrecker.
Keys and her husband/hitmaker Swizz Beatz started dating in 2009 while Beatz -- real name Kasseem Dean -- was still married to R&B singer Mashonda Tifrere, and the couple married in May 2010, just two months after Beatz's divorce was finalized. Keys was six months pregnant with their son, Egypt, at the time of their wedding.
For the first time, Keys has addressed all that gossipy intel -- and she's brushed off any suggestion that her "Fallin" for Beatz involved any shenanigans unbefitting a self-appointed "Superwoman."
"We didn't start seeing each other until months after they had separated," Keys said in a cover story for the June issue of Essence. Still, Keys says she was affected by the gossip that followed, explaining she "was aware of all the false things that were being said about me.
"It definitely hurt," she said.
Commentary wasn't just limited to the gossip blogs, however. Beatz's ex, Tifrere -- who has a son with the producer -- became a player in the public drama. As the Daily Mail notes, Tifrere called out Keys in a letter posted online, claiming the singer "assisted in destroying a family."
Keys, however, never replied to Tifrere's accusations -- and has generally kept quiet on the topic.
"I was sure that if I engaged it would become back-and-forth like some sick entertainment, which goes against everything I believe and would have made things worse," Keys said of her silence.
Relations between Keys, Beatz and Trifere have apparently simmered, Keys told Essence, and Keys is now involved in the lives of Beatz's son with Tifrere, as well as another child of his from a still prior marriage. "Things are good now," Keys told Essence of her relationship with Tifrere.
"[Beatz] is very present in his children's lives. I wouldn't be able to love him otherwise," she said.
