THE rap artist Akon joined chief executives of energy companies and policy makers from around the globe to urge a shift toward clean energy as climate negotiators in Paris prepare to start a second week of talks.

The energy industry is responsible for more than two thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions, which scientists blame for more frequent heat waves, hurricanes and floods. Renewables are about to change the energy world in the same way as digital revolutionised the music industry, Akon told a conference in Paris at a venue near the United Nations climate summit.

“Renewable energy is in the same position now competing with the traditional way of energy,” said Akon, the stage name for Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Bongo Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam.

“Ultimately, we really have to pay attention how the world is moving forward and if we don’t pay attention, of course the people in the renewable energy space will eventually override the people with the traditional energy resources.”

Climate envoys from 195 nations this week will seek to reach a deal in Paris that would rein in greenhouse gases everywhere for the first time. In the past five years, more new renewable energy capacity has been installed worldwide than fossil and nuclear power together, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency.

Investment in clean energy reached $270 billion in 2014, with the industry employing more than 7.7 million people, the agency estimates. Akon, who last year launched an initiative to bring solar energy to some of the 600 million Africans living without electricity, plans to start an academy for local entrepreneurs later this month in Bamako, Mali.

Clean energy is great, but the elite still going to charge out the ass for it.

Now that's some disturbing shit in 2016, but fools still clapping like seals about cac population decline and can't see the big picture. That's like double the U.S. population. And only SOME of them going to be straightened out. That 600 million number might grow. :smh:

But the point is it may be impossible for someone to corner the market. For ex look at the Powerwall tech Tesla is bringing to the market.

Akon's project is using Europeans. If I remember correctly, that's why some people on here were wary of it. They can just cut off the pipeline and then what? I'm talking worst-case scenario, but that's something people should think about.

Can't monopolize the sun and the wind.

If it were that simple, 600 million Africans wouldn't be without electricity. Sun and wind aren't new. The technology that is used to harness the energy of the sun and the wind can definitely be monopolized.

the only thing i dont like abotu this, is i herd he was backed by some china men, and is really making money on the back end of this, and he just the face of the project.

i hope this is not true.
i hope he really doing this, to HELP people. not make $

TBH I don't want the people who have been lying and destroying the earth while amassing power and profits to turn around and profit from the clean energy revolution. In fact they should be criminally prosecuted and stripped of their ill gotten wealth.

Nope, it's Europeans backing he project, but Chinese are making major deals all over the continent. Building their first military outpost out there too.

The institution, scheduled to open this summer in Bamako, Mali's capital, will try to give African engineers and entrepreneurs the skills needed to develop solar power. European experts will help supply training equipment and programmes.
