....and the NBA proved itself a carrier of commonsense--not a minute too soon!
Had Artest been suspended the 'conspiracy nuts' would have had a field day, beginning with a bunch of 'I told you so's'. Announcing to the world that NBA Commissioner's pre-ordained winner (Los Angeles Lakers) had the fix already in place!
The fix that would surely guarantee high NBA Playoff TV ratings, much to Sterns' liking.
The fact that Playoff basketball engenders rough play, and always will. College and Pros. We are starting to hear the cry from the masses---not the purists---"Let the players PLAY". And we're seeing a response to allow that.....within reason.
However, todays' decision will not make much difference. The Rockets' best player, Yao Ming, went down during last night's game with a "broken left foot"--hair-line fracture, and will be lost to them for the remainder of the Playoff season. So,in a sense, the Artest decision is somewhat academic. But,it was timely.
Houston Rocket coach, Rick Adelman, bravely announced that the Rockets can still win without Yao Ming. After all they did go 3-2 during the regular season, absent Yao. Well, what else could he say.......'All is lost'? Naw, too defeatist.
