A’s broadcaster Glen Kuiper apologizes for appearing to use racial slur on-air

Oakland Athletics play-by-play broadcaster Glen Kuiper apologized after appearing to say a racial slur in a slip up on-air during Friday night’s game against the Royals.
During the pregame coverage, Kuiper along with broadcast partner Dallas Braden told the audience what the pair did in Kansas City prior to the game.
That included a visit to the city’s Negro League Museum, which Kuiper appeared to trip over and used a racial-slur instead.
“A little bit earlier in the show, I said something, didn’t come out quite the way I wanted it to and I just wanted to apologize if it sounded different than I meant it to be said. I just wanted to apologize for that,” Kuiper said in the top of the sixth inning.
Shortly after the 12-8 A’s win, the organization released a statement on Twitter condemning the former minor league player’s mistake and alerting that they will address the situation.
“The language used by Glen Kuiper during today’s pregame broadcast is unacceptable. The Oakland Athletics do not condone such language. We are working to address the situation,” the A’s said.

The incident sparked comparison of Kuiper’s apparent slip-up to Thom Brennaman’s situation in 2020, in which the former Cincinnati Reds broadcaster was caught on hot mic while intentionally saying a homophobic slur.

Also taking place in Kansas City, Brennaman said “One of the f-g capitals of the world,” on the Fox Sports Ohio TV broadcast and was quickly suspended by the team.

Kuiper is the brother of Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper, has been a part of the A’s broadcast team since 2006.

A’s broadcaster Glen Kuiper suspended after on-air racial slur

Veteran Oakland Athletics play-by-play broadcaster Glen Kuiper was suspended from his post Saturday after apparently using the n-word on live television.
NBC Sports California said in a statement Saturday that Kuiper will remain off the air until a review of what happened during Friday night’s broadcast is completed.
Vince Cotroneo and Johnny Doskow will rotate in as play-by-play announcers during Kuiper’s absence.
The 20-season announcer apologized ahead of the sixth inning of the California team’s game against the Kansas City Royals, telling viewers his wording “didn’t come out quite the way I wanted it to.”
During the pregame coverage, Kuiper and broadcast partner Dallas Braden reflected on their “phenomenal day” in Kansas City in the lead-up to the game.
Kuiper said the duo visited the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, but appeared to replace the first word with the racially-charged slur.

Shortly after the 12-8 A’s win, the organization released a statement on Twitter condemning the former minor league player’s mistake and promising to address the situation.

Bob Kendrick, the president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum who greeted Kuiper and Braden at the institution just hours before the slip-up, condemned the incident in a statement Saturday.

“I’m aware of the unfortunate slur made by Glen Kuiper. I welcomed Glen to the NLBM yesterday and know he was genuinely excited to be here. The word is painful and has no place in our society. And while I don’t pretend to know Glen’s heart I do know that my heart is one of forgiveness. I hope all of you will find it in yourselves to do the same!” Kendrick wrote.

Former A’s pitcher Dave Stewart agreed with Kendrick’s sentiment: “Bob it could not have been said any better. I know Glen, have worked with him over the years. I believe it was an unfortunate mistake. He, as we all deserve a second chance.”

Kuiper has been calling A’s games in the Bay Area for about 20 years. He is the younger brother of former major leaguer and Giants announcer Duane Kuiper.

Dallas Braden explains silence after Glen Kuiper’s racial slur on A’s broadcast

Oakland A’s color commentator Dallas Braden is speaking out after being silent in the booth as his broadcasting partner, Glen Kuiper, uttered a racial slur during a live broadcast last week.
Kuiper, who has been suspended by NBC Sports California, accidentally used the N-word as he was trying to describe an outing to a Negro League museum, with Braden not reacting in the immediate aftermath.
The former A’s pitcher then released a statement that he posted to his Twitter page Monday night.
“As those of you who know me well recognize, I usually speak out about injustices in order to find understanding and push conversations forward,” Braden wrote.

“Several people have questioned my lack of response to an issue that took place during the pregame broadcast of the Oakland A’s game against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on Friday, May 5th. I believe my silence has been misinterpreted.

“At the time of the incident, I was not aware that anything in the broadcast was amiss. The nuances of live television mean that sometimes we, as broadcasters, miss some of what you, our audiences, hear. We have producers speaking in our ears about what is next, we are formulating our words to articulate our thoughts, we are moving direction from camera to camera, we are waiting for cues, we are checking sound. We have lots going on that is not always visible to our audience. In that moment, I missed the comment and was not aware of it until the sixth inning when Glen Kuiper made an apology.”

Braden then went on to say that the incident has “impacted him greatly” and expressed support for his broadcast partner, calling it an “unfortunate mistake.”

“When issues around race occur, I’m always interested in having conversations aimed at finding healing and advancing collaborative discussions,” the statement continued. “I have reached out to have those conversations, and I have listened, and I have learned. I will continue to seek clarity, encourage learning, and engage in dialogue to bring out the best in our diverse community.”

Kuiper uttered the slur during last Friday night’s game against the Royals at Kaufman Stadium in Kansas City, and was removed from the air the next day.

NBC Sports California then announced Kuiper’s suspension until an internal review of the incident is complete, scheduled for Friday.

Kuiper apologized on air later in the game.

“A little bit earlier in the show, I said something, didn’t come out quite the way I wanted to,” he said. “I just wanted to apologize if it sounded different than I meant it to be said. I just wanted to apologize for that.”
