2 Ohio cops shot and killed after responding to 911 call
Two Ohio cops were killed Saturday by a gunman who ambushed them when they responded to a call.
The 911 caller had told a dispatcher there was a domestic disturbance at an address in the town of Westerville — then abruptly hung up. When the officers arrived, the killer opened fire.
Eric Joering, 39, died at the scene, and Anthony Morelli, 54, at a hospital.
New York Police Commissioner James O’Neill tweeted, “2 officers ambushed and killed after responding to a 911 hang-up, fired upon when they arrived at the address.’’
They were the first Westerville officers killed in the line of duty. The suspect, Quentin Lamar Smith, 30, suffered a gunshot wound and was arrested. He had several previous encounters with police.
Westerville Police Chief Joe Morbitzer praised the two heroes, saying policing “was their calling and they did it right.’’
Linda Keffer, who used to live next to the home where the shooting happened, told the Columbus Dispatch it was occupied by a man, a woman and a child — and cops were often called there.
President Trump tweeted, “My thoughts and prayers are with the two police officers, their families and everybody at the Westerville PD.’’
