arent you supposed to do whats in the parenthesis first, then whatever the squares or roots, then multiplication or division, the adding and subtracting?

i mean its been a LONG time since i did 6th grade math...and i NEED to relearn this shit now that i got a kid.

Google calc broke it down wrong by doing this:

(48 ÷ 2) * (9 + 3) = 288

When it should have beeen 48÷(2*(9+3))

p.e.m.d.a.s.

You got it wrong homie.

48÷2(9+3)

Parentheses first

(9+3) = 12

THEN YOU HAVE 48/2(12)

After that you work left to right

24(12)

288

Multiplication and division are the same, therefore you work right to left after you do the parentheses.

Least that's what I recall lol. I could be wrong.

24(12) or 24x12

i think it boils down to whether you're reading it like this

(48/2)*12 = 288

or like this

48/(2*12) = 2

Wrong again. IIRC if it were how you wrote it it'd be

48÷[2(9+3)]

Which is

48÷[2(12)]

48÷[24]

48÷24

2

Disclaimer - haven't done math like this in a long time.

Fellas, you never remove the parenthesis. Thats the problem for a lot of u

48÷2(9+3) = ????

this should be interesting

now that im lookin at it, i think the division sign separates the problem, to get 288 it would have been 48÷2*(9+3) = with the multiplicatin sign between the 2 and parenthesis, thats my shot in the dark

Funny you say that. I was thinking that the other day, that when I have children I'm going to have to pretty much go back to school from scratch.

Anyway, PEMDAS is

Parentheses, Exponents, Division, Multiplication Addition, Subtraction.

At the least it would break down to

doing the (9+3) first (parenthesis) -- 12

Division - 48÷2 -- 24

Multiplication - 24*12.

I think you mean left to right and I think you are correct on multiplication and division are the same. Fuck I failed.

I think I may be wrong. Damn, it's funny how math is. If you don't stay on top of it it's easy to forget simple shit. Ah, fuck this. FUCK YOU OP. lol

Parenthesis first.
then you can't skip across that division to the other side without finishing resolving the multiplication.

then divide.

been a long time tho.

I got the addition wrong but best guess the right answer.

i too thought it was 2 but that was until i was getting different outputs.
i even busted out my ti-83 and it's output was 288.
