Athens — Four University of Georgia football players were arrested Monday night and charged with misdemeanor theft by deception.

According to University of Georgia Police, three of the players were depositing their regularly-scheduled stipend checks on their mobile phone banking apps, then taking them to a local convenience story for cashing immediately afterward, effectively cashing the checks twice. One other player, wide receiver Uriah LeMay, was retrieving a roommate’s already-cashed check and and cashing it at a convenience store.

LeMay was charged with four counts of theft by deception. His bond was set at $6,000, jail records show. Tray Matthews, a safety, was charged with three counts of theft by deception. His bond was set at $4,500. Jonathan Taylor and James DeLoach, defensive linemen, were each charged with two counts of theft by deception. Bonds for both Taylor and DeLoach were set at $3,000.

Taylor was the first of the four booked into jail Monday at 8:41 p.m., booking records show. By 9:22 p.m., the remaining three were also in jail. All four were released before 11 p.m. Within two hours, all four players were released on bond, booking records show.

The fraudulent practices were brought to the attention of the police by the UGA Athletic Association, which discovered the fraud through its routine accounting practices.

“Their financial division noticed that these checks were being processed twice,” UGA Police Chief Jimmy Williamson said Tuesday morning. “I got contacted by a senior administrator from the athletic association about the matter to file an official report and investigate. It’s a fraud and they get audited and they have to guard against fraud. Number two there is a compliance issue because these players are basically being compensated.”

Williamson said the amount of the checks was $71.50 each, bringing the total amount of the fraud to $786.50. Such crimes are punishable by up to 18 months in a county jail.
“I’m aware of the situation and it will be handled in an appropriate way,” head football coach Mark Richt said in a statement released by the school.

According to “Comprehensive Action Plan” in UGA’s Student-Athlete handbook, “the Head Coach is responsible for imposing whatever discipline measures he/she deems appropriate.” No disciplinary action for the players has been announced by the athletic association as of Tuesday morning.

damn..Damn... DAMN....

Well... one can argue for larger stipends at Div I schools, but then... every D1 school don't generate the type of money UGA does...

I'm a UGA grad so this bothers me... hopefully this won't set us back too badly for the coming season...

but ... I did get an accounting degree from UGA, so I can see the internal audit department of accountants is doin what they supposed to do...

$71, to lose a scholarship:smh:

The shit you do when you are hungry. Feel for the young men, shit will be real bad for them.

Still wish the hbcus would divest from the NCAA, and pay their players. Simple solution, and they would get 100% of the southern/sec players.

It is time they started paying players. These people make millions
for the university, and pay the way for all those people who are on
swimming, gynastics, lacrosse and such sports scholarships, in non
-revenue generating sports. It is hypocritical that they would arrest
them for stealing $71......

Your argument is not new...

the counter argument is, if this should be the policy for every school, then its gonna hurt schools that cant afford it...

Next you end up with the best athletes picking schools based on athletes stipends...

So, we need a better answer... otherwise, expect stuff like this to continue..

I would have loved for AJ Green(all star wide receiver for Cincinnati) to stay another year at UGA, but because he got in trouble for "selling" a jersey, he took his earliest opportunity to go pro... I don't blame him and I did understand, but I was still pissed..

Simpler solution, don't be a dumbass.

They should just add $25,000 to each football/basketball player's bank account per year tax free for kids playing D-1.

This shit goes on at lots of Schools. UGA and recently Florida(Head coach is a former UGA player) are the only ones to put their shit out there like that.

Man UGA football players are trying to flip stipend checks instead of the usual pell grant checks. Must be hard times in Athens. I remember dudes ready to flip the Pell Grant check but never the stipends.

Still pretty sad though. Alot of the guys are from Southern GA where you don't any money or opportunity at all.

Also, living in Athens isnt exactly cheap and can be considered to be expensive compared to the rest of GA.

They would not likely to get a high percentage of the southern players. Most of these kids think there going pro and like it or not until HBCUs are given their due the amount of the players they send to the NFL will remain low compared to the power house conferences due to sheer volume alone.
