26yr old Mother of 3 shot and killed by Police (3/28/15)
Police in Oxnard, California shot and killed a 26-year-old woman Friday morning. The incident lasted approximately 20 seconds from the initial point of contact with Meagan Hockaday, until the time officers shot and killed her.
It all started around 1 a.m., when a man called police concerning what he described as a domestic dispute. The conflict, he explained, was between himself and Hockaday, who police described as his “live-in-girlfriend.”
There were three young children who were also in the apartment home during the incident, according to the Oxnard Police Department.
Police say that when they pulled up to the apartment where the dispute had taken place, they could hear Hockaday screaming inside of the building. But her boyfriend was already outside, making it clear that she was in a state of distress over whatever they had argued about.
Officers say that as they began talking to the man, Hockaday “approached” them with a knife. From the initial reports, this explanation leaves a lot of unanswered questions still, and makes it sound like she was not charging any of them. There were no statements by police that she had made any threatening gestures or the like.
It is entirely possible that Hockaday was suicidal, or making a threat of suicide. Police had been called to deescalate the situation, not to escalate it. If Hockaday was suicidal, she needed help, not a bullet. Again, police do not describe a scenario where she attacked them with that knife, or even made a threat towards them.
We asked the department if there is a recording of the incident. Chief Jeri Williams says that it is standard department policy to record all interactions between police and the public, but Williams did not say if there was a recording of this incident, or when it would be released.
