When is the Democratic National Convention?

The DNC will be held over four days, starting Monday, Aug. 17 and ending Thursday, Aug. 20. Programming is scheduled for 9 to 11 p.m. Eastern time each night. The event was originally scheduled for July but was pushed back due to the pandemic.

Who will speak?
The convention speakers are usually a mix of party luminaries, rising stars and non-politicians whose stories illuminate something the party wants to highlight. The list is not yet complete, but here’s what we know:

Monday
  • Bernie Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont who ran against Clinton in 2016 and was the last opponent to drop out against Biden this year. Sanders is a not a Democrat — he’s a political independent who caucuses with the Democrats — but his liberal ideas have been influential.
  • Michelle Obama, the former first lady and a popular figure in the party.
  • Gretchen Whitmer, the governor of Michigan whose name was in the mix for Biden’s running mate. Her state is another one that Democrats lost in 2016, and Whitmer has been praised for her handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Catherine Cortez Masto, the Nevada senator who became the first Latina leader of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
  • Andrew M. Cuomo, the New York governor.
  • James E. Clyburn, the House majority whip who endorsed Biden in his home state of South Carolina. Biden’s win in South Carolina, the first state on the primary calendar with a substantial Black population, set him on a road to the nomination.
  • Bennie Thompson, the Mississippi congressman and chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.
  • Gwen Moore, a congresswoman from Wisconsin.
  • John Kasich, the former governor of Ohio who ran against Donald Trump for the Republican nomination in 2016 and became an outspoken opponent of the president.
  • Doug Jones, the senator from Alabama who is the most endangered Democrat up for reelection this year.
  • Amy Klobuchar, the senator from Minnesota, another swing state, who also ran in the Democratic presidential primaries.
Tuesday
  • Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the liberal 30-year-old congresswoman from New York whose surprise win over an incumbent Democrat in 2018 catapulted her into the national spotlight.
  • Bill Clinton, the former president.
  • Sally Yates, the former acting U.S. attorney general who was fired by Trump when she refused to defend his travel ban.
  • Charles E. Schumer, the Senate minority leader from New York.
  • John F. Kerry, the former secretary of state and the Democratic Party’s 2004 presidential nominee.
  • Lisa Blunt Rochester, the first woman to represent Delaware in Congress and part of Biden’s vice-presidential vetting committee.
  • Jill Biden, Joe Biden’s wife and an educator.
Wednesday
  • Kamala D. Harris, Biden’s running mate.
  • Barack Obama, the last Democratic president and a popular figure in the party.
  • Elizabeth Warren, the senator from Massachusetts and former presidential candidate.
  • Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House.
  • Hillary Clinton, the party’s 2016 nominee, former senator and former secretary of state.
  • Tony Evers, the governor of Wisconsin.
  • Michelle Lujan Grisham, the governor of New Mexico.
  • Gabrielle Giffords, the former congresswoman from Arizona who helms a group aimed at preventing gun violence.
Thursday
  • Tammy Duckworth, the Illinois senator and veteran.
  • Keisha Lance Bottoms, the Atlanta mayor.
  • Cory Booker, the New Jersey senator and former presidential candidate.
  • Gavin Newsom, the governor of California.
  • Tammy Baldwin, the senator from Wisconsin.
  • Christopher A. Coons, the senator from Delaware and a Biden confidant.
  • Joe Biden and his family.

They are giving a 2016 Republican presidential candidate who promoted anti-black and anti-union policies a prime speaking slot. But they give AOC just 60 seconds? Isn't that more of an insult than not including her at all? Among former presidential candidates, Amy Klobuchar (who would be Biden's running mate if George Floyd were killed three months later) gets a speaking spot but Julian Castro does not? They gave a spot to Michael Bloomberg?!? They did a shitty job setting this up and I expect this convention to highlight how flawed Democratic leadership is as much as it does why not to vote for Trump.

Also, holding off on addressing the attack on the post office in order not to have big news during a virtual convention (as if Trump won't be doing crazy shit all week) is a TERRIBLE look:

Seventeen Democratic "rising stars" – including 2018 Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams – will give a keynote address at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday.

Tuesday's theme at the DNC, which is being conducted virtually this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, is "Leadership Matters" and will "weave together powerful and diverse voices from the next generation of party leaders in a unified pledge to step up and lead in this critical moment for the nation," according to a DNC statement.

Instead of the usual one keynote speaker, this year's address will feature 17 of the Democratic Party's "rising stars," who will "offer a diversity of different ideas and perspectives on how to move America forward," the DNC said.

Among the "rising stars" is Abrams, the first African American woman to be a major party's gubernatorial nominee.

Reps. Conor Lamb and Brendan Boyle of Pennsylvania and Colin Allred of Texas are also slated to speak on Tuesday. Lamb, a Democrat in a district President Donald Trump won in 2016, endorsed Biden in January this year.

Allred, another congressman to flip a Republican district in the 2018 midterm and a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, also endorsed Biden last January, and was the 10th caucus member to do so.

Several early supporters of Biden are also a part of the 17 keynote speakers, including state Sens. Raumesh Akbari of Tennessee, Yvanna Cancela of Nevada, Marlon Kimpsonof South Carolina and Pennsylvania state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta.

Other keynote speakers include state Reps. Mari Manoogian of Michigan, Victoria Neave of Texas, Sam Park of Georgia and Denny Ruprecht of New Hampshire. Mayors Randall Woodfin of Birmingham, Alabama, and Robert Garcia of Long Beach, California, will also get a turn along with former Ohio state Rep. Kathleen Clyde, Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Nikki Fried and Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez.

Its a gamble and it could work, but they should have given the progressive element of the party more space at the convention. Failing to do so could hurt them because that's the most enthusiastic and fastest growing part of it.

Other than being a pubican, what anti-black policies did he promote?

Other than being a pubican, what anti-black policies did he promote?

A key part of my opposition is that to be a Republican is anti-black. That's why I resent his inclusion.

Run of the mill Republican pro-corporation anti-worker shit is also anti-black:

Education:

In his very first budget, Kasich flat out cut $1.8 billion in funding for public schools across Ohio, leaving over 100 K-12 school districts with crippling budget deficits, and forcing local school districts to ask voters to back multi-million dollar emergency funding levies.
All of this, while steering hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars into a scandal-ridden charter school system, which has seen failing grades and has been called “the most troubled in the country” — A move pushed by a charter-school operators who made the maximum legal contribution to Kasich’s political campaign along with his wife.

Economics:

Kasich tax plan benefits rich Ohioans more

Healthcare:

In February, Kasich signed a bill to slash $1.3 million of state funding to Planned Parenthood and other organizations that “perform or promote” abortions (even though Ohio law already prevented state funds from covering abortions). One of Planned Parenthood’s services is Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies initiative, the largest of 14 infant mortality programs in the state, focused on reducing infant mortality rates in the black community. It routinely sends staffers to visit with black moms during their pregnancies and up until the child’s second birthday. “Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies” tackles hurdles common among at-risk moms by providing transportation to prenatal appointments and diapers, formula and other supplies. Over 2,800 new and expecting black mothers benefitted from the program in 2015.
“It is offensive to hear John Kasich tell black women what we should do with our bodies, though not at all surprising. John Kasich blames black women for infant mortality, while as Governor, he cuts programs that help black families in Ohio,” said Alencia Johnson, assistant director of constituency communications for the Planned Parenthood Action Fund in a statement.
“Kasich has created a web of policies that foster unsafe environments for black families,” Johnson said. “It is Kasich who continues to ignore the needs of Ohioans. The black community recognizes the truth — the problem is John Kasich.”

Criminal justice:

Kasich thinks the main problem with the war on drugs is that it has not been waged enthusiastically enough. "If I happened to be president," he told Hugh Hewitt last April, "I would lead a significant campaign down at the grassroots level to stomp these drugs out of our country."

On December 12, 2014, Governor John Kasich formed The Ohio Task Force on Community-Police Relations through executive order following the deaths of Tamir Rice and John Crawford. The group issued its final report in April 2015. The Community Police Relations line item is used to implement key recommendations of the Ohio Task Force on Community Police Relations, including a database on use of force and officer-involved shootings, a public awareness campaign, and state-provided assistance with policymaking and manuals. Funding for this line item has gone down each fiscal year.

There's a lot more... Nobody with his record needs to be given a platform at a Democratic convention.

Trump Campaign Makes Huge Digital Ad Buy During Democratic Convention
The Trump campaign is trying to make sure that Mr. Trump’s message will be almost impossible to miss even during the Democrats’ biggest week.

The Trump campaign is launching an aggressive four-day digital advertising campaign that will take over some of the internet’s most conspicuous real estate during the three marquee days of the Democratic National Convention, which most viewers will watch online.

Adhering to the president’s penchant for focusing attention on himself during major Democratic events, the Trump campaign will be taking over the banner of YouTube for 96 hours starting on Tuesday, the second day of the convention, an expensive and far-reaching digital gambit.

The campaign will also blanket the home pages of The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and FoxNews.com with Trump campaign ads. Even non-D.N.C. programming will be inundated with Trump ads, as the campaign has bought premium, or “unskippable,” ads on sites like Hulu.

The campaign amounts to “high-seven figures,” a significant sum to spend online in such a short period of time, and could top $10 million based on the engagement metrics of some ads (a few digital ads are sometimes charged extra based on engagement). The takeover of the YouTube banner and the news sites’ home pages are national buys, while the spending for Hulu and others will be in swing states.

It’s an attempt to be as digitally ubiquitous as possible during a nearly all-digital convention, and the Trump campaign will be tailoring its message to a direct attack on the Democratic platform as a far-left manifestation of a Republican’s worst fears. Trump campaign officials said they were able to grab the digital slots because the Democrats, who moved their original convention date, had not purchased the time for the original week in July, nor for the new one beginning on Monday.

“It’s great that Team Biden let the Trump campaign grab up the best premium real estate on the internet during Joe’s big week,” said Tim Murtaugh, a spokesman for the Trump campaign. “We’ll show millions of Americans exactly how the radical, leftist takeover of Joe Biden is now complete.” ...

The last presidential campaign to take over the banner of YouTube for an extended period of time was Michael R. Bloomberg’s campaign, which did so for 24 hours the day after Mr. Trump was impeached.

“It’s a massive deal — this is the home page for the largest online video platform in the world,” said Tim Cameron, a Republican digital strategist. “In the same way that Netflix highlights their latest content, this will have a very similar effect where people are going to see it. And many of them will opt in to this viewing experience and consume this content.”

Of course, even an elaborate ad campaign endeavoring to bracket the convention won’t be able to overtake the conversation around an event that will get hours of airtime each night and feature numerous Democratic luminaries.

But the Trump campaign is also making it nearly impossible to be missed. With a heavy focus on premium unskippable “pre-roll” ads that display before content begins on YouTube and other streaming platforms, users will be forced to watch the entire Trump campaign ad before watching their chosen videos.

The campaign has focused heavily on a digital strategy for the past few years.

Biden campaign officials said that they have consistently spent money for ads on Hulu, and said that they are investing their money in more strategic ways on YouTube, consistently focusing on targeted states. They said their own data indicates spending after a major event matters more, and that the Biden team has reserved time on YouTube for the day after the Republican National Convention ends on Aug. 27. (The Trump campaign will also have their premium YouTube ad on the Friday following the convention.)

Republicans contend that the Trump campaign will be able to reach a large audience with their approach.

“You’re going to have a very effective message penetration because the people who are served an unskippable ad want to see that content after the ad,” said Michael Duncan, a Republican digital strategist.

“So they are willing to spend 15 seconds watching your message,” he added. “It’s not like television where an ad comes on and you can go to the bathroom or leave the room until the show comes back on — that unskippable inventory has the ability to not only add a lot of scale but a lot of quality to your digital buy.”

You have valid points. However, its all gamesmanship. He gets to be seen and heard and build across isle credentials for his political future while the DNC gets to build their across isle credentials and have another high profile Romney type GOP'er actually stumping for their ticket. I would hate to see them give him anything else like a cabinet level position afterward, but I understand why they're using him, and he's using the DNC. I also firmly believe AOC deserves more.

What are the numbers of Progressives vs Independent voters?

I have no problem with them giving Kasich time to speak, especially since Bernie, the King of the Progressives, is speaking on Monday night.

I'd understand being upset that AOC is getting so little time, if Bernie wasn't speaking, however with Bernie already having time tonight, having Kasich speak can make uo ground with moderate Repubs or independents that leaned towards Chump in 2016.

Chump won independents in 2016. Kasich can help get some of those votes.

Supposedly an unnamed republican is going to endorse Joe.

This has been boring so far though.

I'm waiting for The First Lady Michelle Obama. That will be the highlight of the night for my wife and I. The beautiful Black Queen That She is. My true First Lady Forever.

I hope Governor Cuomo lights trump fat ass up. And y'all know that fat bitch sitting in the white house tuning in mad as fuck.

I like Kasich even thou hes a Republican mainly cause he was the 1st GOP to stand up to Trump bullshit all the way back to the GOP convention.

AOC is very very dope bro, dont fall for the soundbites and tweets. Find some long-form interviews of her... I'm the most cynical asshole on Earth and she won me over early.

So you dislike AOC for aligning with Black people but you roll with a Republican who materially and factually hurt Black people when he ran the State?
