2014 Lakers offseason

I think it's Carmelo or bust... I think inheriting the throne in LA is a better option than any other departure he could make. He definitely shouldn't become LeBatman's Robin and, while Houston has a lot of potential short-term, LA presents a better situation for the rest of Carmelo's career after 2016 than any other option.

Lakers meet with Carmelo Anthony

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Free agent Carmelo Anthony met with the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday and heard their pitch as to why he is the right man to become the next face of the franchise.

The Lakers also made it clear to Anthony they'd offer him a maximum four-year, $95 million contract if he chose to sign with them, according to sources.

Anthony arrived at the team's practice facility shortly after 3 p.m. ET, and departed just before 6 p.m.

Escorted to his car by Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak on the way out, Anthony stopped to say hello to reporters and signed autographs for Lakers fans but declined to comment on the meeting.

"You know I can't say anything right now, but I wanted to stop and say hey," Anthony said.

A person who was in the Lakers' pitch said they thought it went "really well" and added, "I don't know how big of a shot we have, but I think we have a shot."

Another Lakers source described Anthony as "extremely attentive" throughout the meeting.

Anthony was flanked by agent Leon Rose and business manager Bay Frazier as the group was greeted in the parking lot by former Lakers great James Worthy and then escorted into the building for the beginning of the meeting.

Kobe Bryant was not able to make it back from a family vacation in Europe in time for the meeting, according to sources. Bryant intends to meet with Anthony later Thursday evening, after Anthony's scheduled meeting with the New York Knicks following his session with the Lakers, sources said.

Bryant reached out to Anthony directly to explain why he wasn't able to make the meeting, after the time had been moved up, sources said. The two are close friends, and have been in touch throughout the entire process.

The Lakers' presentation was led by team president Jeanie Buss, executive vice president of player personnel (and Jeanie's brother) Jim Buss and Kupchak. It also included Lakers chief operating officer Tim Harris and executives from Time Warner Cable SportsNet, the Lakers' television network, and representatives from AEG.

Movie producer Joel Silver was also present and created a short film in homage to Anthony, followed by a conversation about the avenues that Anthony and his wife, La La Vasquez, can take into the entertainment industry, multiple sources told ESPNLosAngeles.com.

The Lakers intended to sell Anthony on their championship tradition, commitment to winning and unique platform as the glamour franchise of the NBA, with the largest profit margins available to pour back into the team.

After the Jeremy Lin kerfuffle in Houston on Wednesday, when the Rockets displayed digital images of Anthony wearing Lin's No. 7 jersey on the side of the Toyota Center even though Lin is still under contract, L.A. had a No. 7 Lakers uniform mocked up for Anthony as part of the presentation, according to a source, but did not make any grandiose gestures like the billboard campaign the Lakers did last summer to try to get Dwight Howard to stay with the team. The Lakers chose not to believing his main focus was on winning and not fame.

Xavier Henry wore No. 7 for the Lakers last season, but he is currently a free agent.

Anthony's decision on free agency isn't expected to come immediately.

After meeting with the Knicks later Thursday, Anthony did not give them an answer or a timetable for his decision, a source told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard. He will take the long weekend to think things through. the source said.

I hope Melo picks someone else

Melo isn't helping us win a title, and I don't want him for four or five years

I want to see the Lakers as competitive as possible immediately, as a Kobe fan but not a Lakers fan.

I'm sold on Melo and re-signing Pau, if he'll consent to that. I'm thinking they should do the stretch provision of Steve Nash depending on what other parts they can get.

Jim Buss singled-handedly ruined the team's chances by giving $30 million to an over the hill guard that can only give you 13 PPG on 6 TOs a game.

Lakers had a chance to land Carmelo Anthony and LeBron but now they will be stuck with trying to overpay for a mid-tier star or absorb a larger contract in a trade.

:smh: Jim Buss's plan in 2012 was good but his plan this year failed miserably.

I know, we have enough cap room to fill the roster out with quality players this season. Maybe pickup Deng & Lance Stepheson. Make a run at Love if he dosen't sing else where. Maybe Westbrook wants to return to LA.

So now Kobe is based off seven games coming off a major injury :hmm:

Look out Boston and Chicago

It makes no sense to go to LA. They suck. The Knicks suck.

But at least it's his team and they could pay him the most money. What sense does it make to go to LA. To be in Kobe's shadow and lose.

If he doesn't go to Chicago. He should just stay on the Knicks.

Who the fuck wants to play with Kobe? A broken down Kobe at that? Dwight didn't. I know I wouldn't. Melo gotta be a certain individual to leave the Knicks and that money for the Lakers. The Lakers are the Knicks without any youth and can't give him 5 years. It would be KRAZY.

The Lakers long term plan is to miss getting Carmelo (while pacifying Kobe and thinking they tried), Get Kevin Love in next years free agency unless they get desperate and make a trade at the deadline and get Kevin Durant in the following years free agency. I think they're thinking its a long shot to get Melo but if he does sign with the Lakers they will still be in play to get Love next offseason. For next year,

pf Farmar
sg Kobe
sf Melo
pf Randle
c Gasol

Respectable team out West but not winning a championship.

If they end up getting Kevin Love in free agency,

pf Farmar
sg Kobe
sf Melo
pf Love
c Gasol

Bench
Ranlde

If not then in two years they're planning on,

sf farmar/somebody else
sg Kobe (he's still on the chase for #6)
sf Durant
pf Love
c ?/Gasol (If the Lakers wait for Love to be a free agent.)

Bench
Randle (If the Lakers wait for Love to be a free agent.)

Wolves being desperate accept a trade of Pau & Randle for Kevin Love at the trade deadline. Then the Lakers wait until after the 15/16 season to go after Durant.

The next 3-4 years is Lebrons time just like during Jordan's time the Lakers just kept a respectable team on the court until it was time to pounce and create another dynasty so if the Buss kids were smart they would do just like their dad did and the next couple years play it safe until the next Lakers dynasty arises.

No, it's the obsession of which he dare not speak directly.

I don't think he wants the feds to be able to trace too many direct mentions back to him after the kidnapping.

He's trying to pick up where his pops left off. He's doing a poor job though, but he is getting close to the obsession his father had.

^^^

Farmar signed with the Clippers today.

I don't know what they'll do at point guard then. If the Lakers whiff on Melo then I can see them going after a couple second tier guards like Isaiah Thomas and Lance and move Kobe to sf. Leave enough room to sign Love in this coming offseason and make a run at Durant the following offseason.

Right now it's Nash

Kendall has a team option. He's playing summer league for us and is practicing with the team for Vegas.

and the second round draft pick dude from Mizzou

What's crazy is we still don't have a coach

So I doubt we get Melo, which I still think is a good thing

I think they would go to Lebron and ask him if he's cool with Byron or who would he want. I don't think they would do that with Melo.

I'm hoping that the tweet saying he saw the vacancy as an opportunity is true.

LeBron doesn't need LA. He's a defining figure in Miami and his hometown. He's won championships. He's a rival for Kobe, Carmelo is not.

I think LeBron is an unrealistic waste of time for the Lakers; Carmelo is attainable.

Kendall had a very good season last year. He proved that he belongs in the league. I wouldn't mine having him back next year.

I kind of think they have to keep Nash and hope he has a healthy season.

Maybe they can limit his minutes and he can surprise people.

melo not going to lakers; lakers made it an interesting read by offering the max, outside of that, much to do about nothing...

kevin love isnt going to hit free agency; he will be traded well before free agency period starts; and the team that trades for him, he will have to sign an extension before they trade for him...

Gordon Hayward signed a 4 year, $63 million deal - I don't want to hear anyone complain about the contract Kobe got.

Considering what Gordon Hayward is going to get paid, what kind of players can the Lakers afford if we end up signing Carmelo?

That dude averaged 16 points last year, but anyway

We need to start filling out a roster, before we fill it out with some NBDL dudes

or tank this season...our pick goes to Phoenix if it's not 1-5

That's even more incentive to win now... They could be as shitty as they were this year or worse and get nothing from it. I didn't know that. It's a very desperate situation, I can see the Lakers striking out huge for next year.

If we miss out on Carmelo, which I wouldn't be incredibly upset if we do then they would need to spend their salary cap money somehow. They should do a sign and trade with the Knicks and send Pau to the Knicks for Amare and Shumpert. Amare's $23 million should fill up most of our cap space and we get a young wing in return. The Knicks have Hardaway Jr & drafted Early so they can afford to give up Shumpert. The team will still probably miss the playoffs but there's no way the team will be as bad as it was this year so the pick hopefully would be around 10 or 11.

Amare's contract is up after this year so we would still have room for a max slot next offseason.

I don't mind the Lin deal

We need a draft pick and he's gone after this year

I'm biased for Kendall though

We need to work on filling out our roster
