1UP announces Game of the Year nominees, Kane & Lynch makes the cut

The 1UP Network has released their list of nominees for game of the year, and voting is now open at the 1UP Web page. We noticed something while scanning through the list of nominees: Kane and Lynch: Dead Men made the cut.:smh:

By now you know what we think about the game, and you may have heard a little something about a bit of controversy on another recent review of the same title, but somehow Kane and Lynch: Dead Men has made it into 1UP's Best Action Game nominees list. Granted, 1UP gave the game a relatively good score of 75, proving that they liked it more than we did. But, even their readers have shown some disdain for the game, giving it an average score of 4.9. I think that's "bad" by their own scale. If your readers aren't digging it, then why put it on the list?

I know this isn't Destructoid's nominee list, and I know that 1UP leaves voting to their readers, but we wouldn't have included Kane and Lynch: Dead Men in a Best Action Game lineup. Cashwh0re.com might, but would you?

Hit the jump for the full release and nominee list.

[Thanks, JR]

1UP Network, widely recognized as the
authority in video game industry news and content, today announced the
nominations for the 5th annual 1UP Awards, honoring the year's most popular
games. Voting is open to the gaming public (http://bestof2007.1up.com) now
through Dec. 31, 2007. Award winners will be announced at a special
ceremony on February 20, 2008.

"2007 was an extremely exciting year for video games," states Sam
Kennedy, editor-in-chief of 1UP.com and site director of 1UP Network. "With
the further establishment of new platforms, coupled with the continuous
advancements in video game technology, this year delivered some of the best
titles to date. The 1UP Awards are truly the voice of the gamers and by
handing the judging reigns over the gaming community, the developers get
direct praise from their fans. We greatly look forward to seeing who the
gamers think were the cream of the crop this year."

The 1UP Awards were created to empower the true game critics -- the
gamers themselves -- to use their own experiences and opinions to determine
the best PC and console games of the year. Gamers will be able to vote for
their favorite titles, selected by 1UP Network's esteemed group of editors,
in 13 categories, including a brand-new category, "Best Console
Downloadable Game."

2007's stellar line-up of games has resulted in multiple nominations
for several leading game publishers, including 26 for Sony Computer
Entertainment America, 24 for Electronic Arts, 17 for Nintendo, and 12 for
Microsoft.

WTF is up with that list?! Kane & Lynch up for Best Action Game of 2007? And didn't God of War II come out in 2006?! Assassin's Creed shouldn't be up there either. :hmm: There are some other glaring fuck ups on that list too like Def Jam: Icon even making the list and Naruto: Rise of a Ninja not making the list. The list of fuck ups continues, but I'll stop here. Bioshock better damn well be Game of the Year...or Call of Duty 4...or even Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Anything else winning the title is bullshit, especially Halo 3. :hmm:

Best Action Game - God of War II

Best Adventure Game - The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

Best Wrestling/Fighting Game - Guilty Gear XX Accent Core

Best Puzzle Game - The Orange Box (Portal)

Best Racing Game - Forza Motorsport 2

Best Role Playing Game - Mass Effect

Best Shooting Game - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Best Sports/Extreme Sports Game - NBA 2K8

Best Strategy Game - World in Conflict

Best Multiplayer Game - Halo 3 :yes:3x

Best Music Game - Rock Band

Best Console Downloadable Game - Warhawk

Game of the Year - Tie Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare / Mass Effect

Biggest let down - Crysis

Okay, just seemed so long since I played God of War II. But still, Bioshock was the most well-rounded FPS/RPG hybrid game experience this year IMO. Call of Duty 4 was the best multiplayer game this year. And Virtua Fighter 5 gets best fighter hands-down. Uncharted or Zelda deserve Adventure game honors. As much as I love The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, I don't think Shivering Isles was as good as the other expansion pack. And Mass Effect had the goods, but too many glitches. Undecided on RPG of the Year, though Persona 3 was a long-awaited treat.

i havent made my list yet

but i'm going to have to agree with the mass effect comment

i'm glad i found a decent review of it a day or two before it released. it said there is nothing revolutionary about mass effect. which if you have played rpg's before its true.

what the review did say was that it does it well.. many have tried to do some of mass effect's style of gameplay and choice menu's but mass effect pulled it off well, nothing special though and not new, well new to original xbox and xbox 360 owners.

it also had to many glitches to get so high a score, i personally would knock a few points. had mass effect been on the ps3, everyone would be crying foul.

its a fun and great game none the less. i love it.

Damn I forgot Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six came out this year, I got to rethink Game of the year.
