Lil Jon turns up for education in Ghana.
Rapper Lil Jon spent last week opening a primary school in the Asuogyaman District in eastern Ghana.
The 46-year-old rapper raised money for the kindergarten school earlier this year in conjunction with Pencils of Promise, a program designed to give children around the world quality education. Since 2009, Pencils of Promise has built 414 schools.
The Abomayaw D.A. Kindergarten officially opened on Thursday and Lil Jon, his wife and son all made the trip for the special occasion. The school’s dedication honored Jon’s mother, Carrie Smith, whose birthday is in October and who died in 2013.
“Yesterday was a special day for me and my family,” the rapper wrote on Instagram on Friday. “We had a ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication of a brand new primary school in Ghana I funded along with @pencilsofpromise. I dedicated it to the Abomayaw community and to my mother. God is good.”
The so-called King of Crunk spent about a week in the West African country before the opening, meeting students, sitting in on classes and enjoying the culture.
Abomayaw D.A. Kindergarten has three fully furnished classrooms, restrooms and an office. Children in the area have spent years studying under trees and in a shed, reported local Ghanaian radio station Starr FM. Now, the students can still learn, even when it rains.
This is Lil Jon’s first time working with Pencils of Promise, he told another local Ghanaian station Joy Online. “It is amazing to see the community come out and support and the appreciation they are showing for us being here, us coming into the community, us building the school. I just feel like I’m lost for words of how amazing it feels to give the community something like this school,” he said.
This is far from Lil Jon’s first philanthropic effort. While Lil Jon was on “Celebrity Apprentice” during seasons 11 and 13 with then-host Donald Trump, he raised $80,000 to help rebuild schools in his hometown of Atlanta and $160,000 for the American Diabetes Association.
