‘Coming 2 America’ Confirmed to Be Rated PG-13, Unlike Eddie Murphy’s Original Comedy

The original Coming to America was a huge comedy hit back in 1988. It scored over $128 million at the domestic box office, and it raked in another $160.6 million in international territories. That’s huge business for an R-rated comedy released in the late 1980s, but that was the drawing power of Eddie Murphy at the time. However, when Coming 2 America went into production at Paramount Pictures, before the studio sold distribution rights to Amazon Studios, and it seems like they thought making the sequel R-rated would hurt their box office chances. The movie has officially been rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America.

ComicBook.com has the news on the MPAA’s official rating of Coming 2 America. The film has been rated PG-13 for “crude and sexual content, language and drug content.”

That could have easily been the same reason for giving the original movie an R-rating back in 1988. First of all, the original film opens with a bit of nudity. When Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) is awoken in the morning, he’s bathed by a couple women who appear topless. That kind of nudity pretty much guarantees an R-rating, even back in 1988. On top of that, there are more than a few f-bombs dropped throughout the film, including a handful by Samuel L. Jackson in a bit appearance as a character who tries to rob the McDowell’s restaurant. But the most f-bombs probably come in the barbershop scenes:

More than likely, Coming 2 America will utilize one good use of the word “fuck,” but has probably gotten rid of any nudity. Even before this official MPAA rating came along, we could have predicted this based on what director Craig Brewer said when the first photos from the movie were revealed. The director said:

“Know we designed this movie to push some buttons, but we also designed it to be a family viewing thing. My 12-year-old watched it the other day and loved it. It’s for the whole family. The thing about Coming to America is it’s been on TV so much that a lot of kids have seen it even though the movie was rated-R. The night before, do Coming to America if you haven’t seen it already, but you don’t need to.”
Hopefully, that doesn’t neuter Coming 2 America and keep it from being funny. My biggest concern is that most of Eddie Murphy’s family comedies with PG-13 ratings aren’t very funny, but his R-rated comedies are among his best. There’s a chance that Coming 2 America won’t be sullied too much by this decision, since the original wasn’t nearly as raunchy as many other R-rated comedies today, but count me a little worried about how this will turn out.

Coming 2 America arrives on Amazon Prime starting on March 5, 2021.

Funny thing about Coming to America, I've seen it on TV more than I've seen it on VHS, DVD or digital, so I'm actually used to the edited TV version.. Hell the old ABC Family Channel would air it around the holidays as a Christmas movie.

So no tits during the bathing scenes, no fuck you rants, no over the top sexual innuendo? What kind of coming america is this? Next you gonna say there’s hamburgers without actual animal parts in it..oh wait.. there is.. what twilight zone Episode did I land on

I was just telling somebody this a few days ago. I looked at the original for the first time in a long ass time and I was shocked by the breast scene in the beginning and some of the other parts.

With that said without the nude scene and cut a few of the curse words in the original that movie would be PG13 nowadays. They let more shit fly now.

Most movies are PG-13 now. Getting a R rating is like a death blow in the industry because you cant make as much money.

What's censors allowed as PG-13 in 1988 is significantly different from what censors will allow as PG-13 in 2021. Think about what you could see and hear on TV back then versus what you can see and hear now. Some "critics" are having sight unseen "big concerns" just to be contrarian.

When I added it to my plex server, I was kinda shocked at the breast scene because I had forgotten about it, I had seen the movie so many times on BET or ABC Family, that the movie started registering to me as almost a "family movie".

Also, I think the rating boards in America need to rexamine what constitutes an R-rating. Titanic got a PG-13 rating and had a extended scene of a naked woman while The King's Speech got an R rating because King George drops the f-bomb multiple times in a scene. IMO both movies should have been PG..

yeah I'm real cool with this

especially with pandemic TV

why restrict your audience in ANY WAY?

go check and see how the ratings are for FAMILY shows are right now?

Even borderline family friendly stuff...

THAT is the wave

we got families who have APPOINTMENT VIEWING now

with not only Mandalorian , Wandavision but any of the big animated or family flicks on streaming

Wonder Woman even got caught up in that.

get this money, and Coming To america was Denver nasty funny ANYWAY.

and finalyy

PG -13 in 2021 is NOT the same as in 1989

Scream was originally suppose to be nc-17... they had to edit somethings out and still couldn’t get it lowered to rated r.. than the producer went to the rating board and told them it was a comedy and than it got lowered to rated r

Robocop was rated R guys, it's the merchandise and appeal to kids that's giving yall false memories.
No it wasn’t.. kids Were allowed to see that movie.. in fact to this day that movie was the biggest fuck you to parents cause they had no idea that movie was gonna be that vulgar.. if it was rated r that would of been red flags.. it’s considered rated r in today’s format but wasn’t rated r back than trust me

The PG-13 rating was introduced in the early 1980s so that movies don't get hit with an undeserved R-rating but the 1987 Robocop was rated R and I think was nearly rated X.

Especially on the Deuce. We could walk into ANY fucking thing back then, as long as we 'behaved' ourselves.
Yo this shit got me tripping right now.. I remember me and dr truth laughing about how both of us had individual experience seeing robocop as kids and that movie being mad vulgar and parents being completely shocked..that’s why I’m like no way parents should’ve been shocked if it was rated r

Maybe the fact that it was SciFi and had robots and whatever else made the rating just go over parents' heads. You know they hated the shit we liked.
